There's too much money floating around in this world, or at least it is distributed very unfair.

aren't all of those versions of WIM available on the 12"? that's a ridiculous sum of money for a bland looking CD.

Some people just want the music, others want that hard to find item. If you have been looking for something for a very long time and you have the chance to buy it, you sometimes have to pay a higher price than you wanted to. Obviously there are a lot of people who want this.

And the CD clearly says "Not For Sale"

New Order better get their lawyers on this one, or at least get part of the profit (perhaps its the band hawking their surplus stock in order to make up for the loss on Blue Monday?)

In recent years, the culture of music collection has shifted a little.

With the popularity of collecting tools like eBay, previously rare items are now available to all, regardless of location. It's pretty easy to put together a collection of NO's standard commercial back-catalog these days and at a reasonable price. So where does that leave the hardcore collector? Looking for point-of-difference items, so promos released in extremely limited quantities like this one become the true quests. Sure it doesn't have anything on it that's not available on standard releases, but it is a genuine New Order rare item that distinguishes your collection from the next shmo with all the back catalog and a bunch of rarities. It's collectors' cache is enhanced also through its unique (albeit mundane) insert art.

On top of all this you have eBay operating in its capacity as an inflationary agent. Because the whole world can theoretically bid on these rare items, the prices go up. Why would some dude stick it out for sale in his market stall in Chorley for a bunch of locals to poke about with when he can make twenty times that amount on the Net?

I'm not justifying the bottom line here but you can see how it's not always about tracklistings anymore.

It's the only UK CD that has the Carabinieri and Subbuteo Dub mixes on it. It's also pretty rare. I've never actually seen a figure of how many, but it wasn't a lot. If I remember right, NME had a competition to win it in some sort of presentation bag with the 12", sticker, cap and god knows what else.

I haven't really checked the chronological order of things, but isn't the WiM CD5 promo (one of) the first CD promos from Factory? Technique was promoed (nice word) in Canada, but that doesn't count.

And it's also pretty limited.

It must be close to the only Factory CD promo.

There were promo CDs from other countries issued around this time (US True Faith, BM88, etc) but not from Factory UK.

Even some of the early London promo CDs are now fetching some decent coin.

Insightful analysis DC. The wonders of the marketplace at work. I can understand the desire the want an item that is unique - it's the price coupled with the substance (musically and artistically) that amazes me. You can probably get the entire New Order back catalog for near what's being paid for a 4-song CD.

Having said that I don't know that there was much in the way of Factory promo CDs for NO-related releases like Revenge or Electronic either.

To be quite honest its rarer than rocking horse shit, as i said i've been after this for many years so hence would probably pay the asking price . The last few times it has been listed on ebay it has fetched well over £200,but i suppose you CAN pay too much for some things,but the completist in me says that i want it and would have probably bid a bit more if i was not at work.

As far as it goes for the "first " factory promo i think that the only reason they released it was because of the mca connection. As for the doubting thomas's who bang on and say its only worth £30 or so on then by all means sell me your copy,i'd be more than happy to pay £30 for it!
