Surely if you take an item like the True Faith CDV and get an average of what it sells for on eBay over say a year, then you'd have as good a market value as you could get?

Or are you referring to a materials value, sentimental value or something more abstract, OB?

You can't take what something sells for on Ebay as "market value". As you see countless times on countless items, the 'must have' factor takes over and there are those that will pay whatever it takes to win the item.

If a specialist dealer offered a WIM promo for £200, I doubt he'd sell it.

Au contraire, the prices posted by the likes of eil.com are outrageous IMHO. Mostly they seem to be in excess of what you'd pay on eBay.

Somone like me always pay over the odds for rare stuff on ebay,like someone said further up the page ebay has opened many doors. For the last 4 years i have tried every site all over the world in my pursuit of said item. Thinking about it tho,for the money that i would have paid for the wim pro the money could have got me a copy of fac 2, still hessian and maybe an ideal for living thrown in for good measure. suppose that puts it into perspective.

Suddenly this has turned into Microeconomics Online. Discussion of market valuation and opportunity costs abound.

In a marketplace like e-bay, what someone is willing to pay and what something is worth are identical. All value is subjectively determined by the buyer and seller in these circumstances and you cannot stand at some theoretical objective point and say the item isn't worth what someone is willing to be paid. But remember that the market does not discriminate between intelligent and unintelligent subjective valuations, it simply provides the mechanism for establishing the price that will facilitate mutually beneficial exchange between buyer and seller. Three cheers for the Austrians! [the Austrian School of Economics,, that is.]

Also, we should all keep in mind, what one profound philospher said: "So don't tell me about politics Or all the problems of our economics When you can't look after what you can't own You scream and shout all day long"

Although that same esteemed philosopher/economist spent the following years stewing over nebulus concepts like The Shelf-life and Price of Love; The Potential Value of Love in Relation to Honey; and Whether Real Love Can Be Sold for Gold.
