Digital/Re: Order @ The Spread Eagle, Shoreditch - Thursday 19th May

To recognise and pay tribute to the 25th anniversary of the death of Ian Curtis, your favourite Joy Division tribute band and successful Community contestants Digital and your favourite New Order tribute band Re: Order will be playing in London.

Thursday May 19th - the Spread Eagle in Shoreditch. 2 Kingsland Road, London E2 (junction of Old Street, Kingsland Road and Hackney Road).

Free admission. We will be playing a set containing some JD Classics and a few surprises. Re: Order will be playing some JD Classics and some NO classics. Will Digital play Working Overtime before New Order do? Will Will remember the third verse to She's Lost Control without an autocue?

We'll have copies of both the Community LP and EP on sale should anyone want one who hasn't managed to pick one up yet.

Any news on t'nothern gigs Tim?

Made lots of contacts with people, trying to sort out dates. It's a case of getting a Friday in one town and the next night in another, and given our New Order-following commitments this summer, there ain't many windows of opportunity!

I don't believe this. Kensington is just up the District Line from me, but I'm going to be on holiday in Cornwall on May 20th. Tim, one day i'll make it, just you see.

You should do a show around Dublin when you are over here for Oxegen.

It's only me coming from the band though, and I'm only staying the Sunday night! Quite happy to do an impromptu acoustic set at the festival though if someone brings an acoustic guitar, just around the racecourse grounds.

OK then, there is also Kilburn in July, and probably Glasgow in July as well, plus some other ones still being finalised. Don't think there will be any London gigs between the 8th July and September though. I am trying to sort something out for the night before Hyde Park as well.

Just us, doing both a New Order and a JD set. It's likely to be more September than July now. We are looking out for a second Scots show as well - know anywhere in Aberdeen?

This gig next Thursday with Re: Order is a one-off, which came about when we both independently approached the promoters to pay our respects to Ian Curtis.

There won't be any future shows featuring both bands. The material is too similar for the two bands to have total freedom over what we play. I can't imagine the punter would be too happy with either band if we both played what we want to, which seems to be the same songs! Both bands see themselves as playing both JD and NO stuff - we've only done the all-JD set when we have played with Re: Order before, on the understanding that they would be playing an all-NO set. There is no understanding to that effect at Shoreditch, both bands will be playing a mixture of songs, with no duplication of songs. Punters will get around 30 different tracks played by the two bands, I would think!

Our Kilburn show in July will consist of two sets, a mixed JD/NO set (brand new NO, no less!) and a JD classics set. Not gonna tell you in which order so that people get there for both sets!

How much will the Community LP/EPs cost?

I think we can do them for £7 for the EP and £10 for the LP, maybe less. Depends on how many beers have gone down by then!

Tell you what, if you can persuade Jim Reilly Jim Reilly to sign them, with his own name, you can have the EP buckshee!

This is a fantastic, brand spanking new venue: capacity approx. 450

Can I ask probably a daft question? Why does a Joy Division tribute band want to play Crystal or Krafty for example? Quite a few people who come to watch you won't like New Order?? I know I'd prefer to hear to hear just JD material.

But we're not just a JD tribute band - we are as much a New Order tribute band. Both the songs we had on the Community releases were New Order ones, we have recorded as many NO as JD. We've only done all-JD sets when appearing with Re: Order, on the grounds that they would be doing the NO ones. Other gigs have seen mixed sets - because we play the songs live rather than relying on sequencers and pre-recorded backing tracks there is more of a lean towards the guitar/live keyboard ones.

This Spread Eagle gig sees no agreement with Re: Order as to who will be playing what. Re: Order have told us what they will be doing from the JD catalogue, and our responsibility to the audience is to play some varied material that encapsulates the full range of the JD back catalogue, so that we don't get two versions of LWTUA etc played on the night. We may also decide to play the NO songs we have recorded at the Spread Eagle - as we will be promoting the releases containing us that are available for sale on the night.

We'd have no qualms at all about throwing Crystal or Krafty into the set if we'd rehearsed them (as it happens we haven't), but we have rehearsed a whole load of other NO songs, some of which will be appearing tomorrow night. This is the last gig that will see Digital and Re: Order on the same bill, so as we see it we are essentially free to play whatever we like from the combined JD/NO repertoire. We've worked hard on rehearsing and arranging the songs, which is all the justification we need to be entitled to play them!

Fair enough, I didn't know you were supposed to be a New Order cover aswell. I've never seen you play without RO, but will do in July.

I wasn't particularly referring to the gig tomorrow - it was just a genuine question. I am not arguing from the corner of Re:Order, as I am not in the band of course.
