Mick, please stop with the blatant lies.
The audio is out of sync with the video. I play keyboards and guitar and they are CLEARLY playing the songs live. Just pop the file in your favorite video editor and slip the audio about 400ms and you get them back in sync....
And it is just not credible to think that ALL OF A SUDDEN, after years of denouncing folks who mime, that New Order would do it...
And Cunningham IS a keyboardist, just check out 511 or 316... I also read he helps compose keyboard parts.
So, please, end the total bullsh*t insinuations.
(do you honestly think they spent hours prerecording versions of the new lp and their old material JUST so they could come out and fake it live? that would take quite a lot of time and energy!)
I thought you were joking at first.... jeez.... (the only reason I am upset about this is cause new order have a certain credibility, and new fans checking these forums may actually believe your unanswered accusations and think new order is just one step from britney spears et al....)
I particularly liked the theory that they would mime to a track that wasn't the record, but something pre-recorded to make it sound live... ![]()
That ranks right up there with Dick Lantern's "Barney ego" statement.
.
i'm going to stick with my guns and back up mick on his stance.
watch closely as phil plays the intros to jetstream, crystal, and the bridge during krafty. sure, he played quite a few live keyboard parts during in the 511 dvd, but with all of the sequencing the band relies on now, i wouldn't be surprised if he just decided to say "fook it" and now lets the computers do the work so he can concentrate on his guitar playing.
i'm still a bit curious as to whether steve is miming or not.
Tarbox23 wrote: Mick, please stop with the blatant lies.
*No lies, mate. I just see his fingers NOT going were they're supposed to go, out of sync or not... It's not that they move earlier or later than the sound, they just DO NOT EVER move the way they should. Unless he has set the keyboard so he can press one key and then the others follow automatically, but that's not different than pressing a "play" button. Sometimes that trick is required for the most difficult stuff, like bits of Blue Monday and Perfect Kiss, but those missing movements in the songs of the show would have been rather simple... I just don't see what I hear.
And it is just not credible to think that ALL OF A SUDDEN, after years of denouncing folks who mime, that New Order would do it...
*All of a sudden my arse. They've been totally miming on Top Of The Pops for 12 years now, haven't you ever heard? ;)
And Cunningham IS a keyboardist, just check out 511 or 316... I also read he helps compose keyboard parts.
*Absolutely yes, he can play keyboards and I'm sure he does it in proper concerts. But he didn't at that show.

*Oh no, if you see he's just usually playing the guitar (except LWTUA and Jetstream, speaking of which, it would be funny if the keyboard would re-play the chords Phil had just "played" while he plays guitar in the second part). The VERY FEW TIMES he gets to the keyboard are just for a couple of chords and notes here and there (the most of the keyboard stuff is obviously a track in the mix as it's been for years, even live as it would be totally impossible to play them live, especially if you have to play guitar too). I don't think they spent a lot of time recording live those few bits so they could mix them with the usual base in the TV studio.
I thought you were joking at first.... jeez.... (the only reason I am upset about this is cause new order have a certain credibility, and new fans checking these forums may actually believe your unanswered accusations and think new order is just one step from britney spears et al....)
*There's still an abyss to Britney Spears, Tarbox. It's not things like these that matter now (unless you're a teenage holier-than-thou pseudo-punk). It's all about the music. And Phil does such a great performance on guitar we can forgive those few mimed bits on the keyboard. I just don't really care, it was just surprising to see but after all it doesn't matter, that doesn't make the band any better or worse. They DID play live, the four of them. I just can see the keyboard part was mimed, for whatever reason, I'm sure there is one. Maybe those keyboards would have required more equipment, or whatever, they weren't just on a true stage, and they were doing multiple takes, so I just guess they wanted to save time with the keyboard. Nothing wrong with it, it's alright.
Hmm, looking again at Crystal, I hear the keyboards earlier than Phil is arriving at the keyboard...
But it is a great concert, and I can´t stand missing notes at the keyboard so I think it is a good decision.
Now we can download it and listen to it without waiting at that moment that things went wrong - except the sologuitar thing of Bernard.
for a band with as much experience as New Order, it should be humiliating for them to rely so heavily on pre-recorded material for their live shows. why can't they hire a keyboard player for the shows? they pay backup singers so a keyboardist should be on the list as well. it really does piss me off that a band of newOrder's stature will cheat their fans out of a real experience because they are too cheap to hire a keyboard player. not being able to pull out a classic because of programming issues is also a fucking joke coming from a band the popularised the rock with synths/sequencers genre. i've seen bands with way less experience be able to pull off amazing stuff with samplers/synths/guitars and drums. it's pure laziness on their part and it's insulting to the fans.

I can only hope the gig is more to your liking!
Enjoy!
Watching the videos another time, I might admit I'm not sure Phil mimed Love Will Tear Us Apart. This is my theory: first they didn't want to set up all the equipment which was required, and more importantly Phil would have found annoying playing seriously the keyboards with the guitar on his side, and this can be understood as it must not be simple to exactly play the piano intro to Jetstream with one arm bearing the weighth of the guitar. BUT on LWTUA he doesn't play guitar, he just can play the keyboard, and it's a very simple keyboard too, the equipment and the melody. So I guess he really played that song, also I can't spot any true moment when it's evident he's not playing any note (while it's pretty clear, as said, on Jetstream and Crystal). BTW they don't usually bring backing vocalists either. With Krafty we have also the funny sight of Barney's voice coming both live and recorded (in the chorus). I've alwys thought he should have left those backing vocals to Hooky...
Thanks Eric & Spotnick! ![]()
Now, let's hope certain predictable NOOLers have burned this to DVD. ;)
In case I have something to trade someday....
Mick, I am going to go back and retract my mean comment about you.... because...
I think it DOES look like Phil is miming the keyboard on the Kimmel show video....
which pisses me off.
but then again, the Kimmel show was a disaster on video. Sounds from the fans that being there was a different story, but the tv version is craptacular. But that is for another thread...
anyway, I am questioning now my prior post and do agree that at least Phil could be miming keys... which is sad.
let us check the kimmel videotape...
sickened, -mat
p.s. did gillian ever mime keys? now i wonder...
I thought that overall, that was a great live performance. I have a good set of speakers with a bass drive hooked up to my computer and I was very pleased. Especially after I waited up late to see that debacle on that Kimmel Show where they only showed 1 1/2 songs out of six or so.
As for the earlier comments re: live vs. recorded. They are using a backing track for most songs which has pre-recorded material. That includes vocal, guitar dub, lower bass, drums and keyboard. New Order play on top of that to give that layered sound we are used to.
Overall, I give that a 9/10. Best I have seen in some time.
The title track to the recent album (WFTSC) is #$%^%&&** great.
Cosmo
that is sadly what i began to realize, cosmo...
and with that, there goes all artistic credibility...
i may have to stop being a new order fan...
after the nyc show of course.
(for all you new folks, at one point, new order refused to play tapes or any of that bullshit live.... )
i guess they have sold out....
Well, Tarbox,
I agreed with some of your earlier statements. . .
And I would agree with you that it would be better if they played totally LIVE. I mean - $%&*%$$ is STEVE undervalued or WHAT ? Look at him on LWTUA ? I'm a singer/guitarist/drummer and SH*T, give this guy some latitude. He is Sooooo Gooood.
But, for a live sound, I was very impressed. Esp. on WFTCS. That was great. It is their best song since I don't know. . .Atmosphere.
Cosmo
yeah, I agree... WFTSC (the song) blows away 99% of what most indie bands are putting out these days... it is just basic indie rock, stripped down, soulful, no tricks, sounds almost like something early Sonic Youth or the Gobetweens or any local college garage band would have died to come up with...
I love the techie dance side of New Order, but am continually fascinated that they can put out classic indie rock songs that COULD be played in someone's garage...
and, hell yeah, Morris is the pulse and key, the true representative of the band.... "human drum machine" that never fails... everyone takes him for granted. I think the best new order songs are the ones he helped compose...
I'm glad you're realising what happened in France... what happened on the Kimmel show was pretty similar. Anyway I wouldn't be saddened at all, it's just TV appearances, music biz promotion, it's already good they can do that, and they did it brilliantly. They all play stuff, nobody fakes everything, it's just they need the aid of prerecorded tracks for their whole sound. It's a pretty complex sound, you know. They aren't Kaiser Chief or those Oasis gibbons. They don't do primitive music, they make evolved stuff and to set the whole thing up for a live performance you need more space and time than what they get in a stupid TV studio. These TV shows were alright and the concerts will be even better, no reason to question your being a New Order fan, unless you're some kinda old fashioned indie purist, but I don't think you ever said The Housemartins were the only true musicians at the age of Acid House... ;)
i would like to know how can i get this show you are talking about? i guess i didn't got in time to download it, so.... is there's a way a can download it now ? thanks in advance

Um, these links were only available for a week mate. Is your intention to get them put up again? If so, i fully support it since i only have dial-up and it takes forever to download videos.
Yeah, I hope they get put up again. Spotnick can you please convince the host to upload these again please? :(

Some similarity in feel to WFTSC in my ears, anyway.
