A Christmas of Joy

So there I am in the parents' home, Christmas Eve, utterly bored... And what do I spy...? Santa coming down the chimney? Sleigh bells ringing through the air? Visions of sugar plums? No no no...

A mindblowing *gigabyte* of Joy Division live tracks dropped onto AudioGalaxy!

In particular, I was looking at about 1am Christmas day, so the tracks came online precisely on Christmas. If you have a decent Internet connection and an AudioGalaxy account (the latter is free), you have no excuse for not checking this out!

Some of the concerts you'll find... August 2nd '79 - the YMCA gig on the box set November 2nd '79 - the "I Remember Nothing" gig on the box set February 29th '80 - the "Closer" gig on the box set and several other concerts (about 18 to be exact!) that I've never heard before...

Absolutely great stuff!

Of course some of us Morris, Hook, Sumner and Curtis fans have had all of these for over 20 years.......

Nothing new there though, had hoped our mysterious source may put some of the rare items on there, but no such luck :(

Joy Division was completely 'before my time'. I only got into them around the time Substance was released, and I've had the misfortune of just not being in the proximity to Joy Division bootlegs. (If I saw one, I would buy it.) So for me the Internet is an amazing resource...

However, there may be concerts there that even you do not have... The 'rarer' ones are:

790922 Nashville Ballrooms, London 790908 Futurama I Festival, Queen's Hall, Leeds 800405 Winter Gardens, Malvern

These are only rare to me because I've never seen them before in any form...

You are taking the piss, right ? I fucking went to the Malvern show !!! I have all the available Joy Division recordings. I was hoping that the Mountford Hall, first Plan K or the 28/9/79 Factory shows would be on there.

One gig that was especially interesting to me was 790802 YMCA - for anyone who's heard it (you can download it right now if you haven't), this may be relevant...

What's the deal with the recording? The sound goes in and out, the vocals are really good, then really poor, there's all these weird stereo effects. I'm used to concerts with consistently great or terrible sound, or ones with problems in the beginning that are cleared up, but this one is just all over the place.

I heard somewhere that the YMCA Autosuggestion was included on the box set largely as a gift to owners of the bootleg - that song being, on the bootleg, completely unlistenable. True? Not true? Anyone know what the story is?

The problem with the bootleg is that somebody starts talking really loud to the person recording it during Autosuggestion - they say "he gets really rhythmic at times" or something like that at a point where Barney is trading riffs with Ian's spasmodic dance in what is a stilted and fragmented noise of a song anyway. It only lasts for a few seconds, but is legendary in bootlegging circles !
