Mad props to Dave Dresden and Jamie Oliver

Hello all from a new member and unintentional contrarian. Please accept both my humble wishes for a great new year and an e-Guiness Extra Cold (see attachment).

First, thanks to Dave Dresden (if he hasn't been scared away from the forums) for the great Someone Like You remixes, particularly the 911 vocal. I'm only partially (say, 5 percent) sucking up...honest. The track is still in there, but with a massive bass thump and a really nice, melancholy ambience that transforms the chorus into something altogether beautiful and foreboding. Now if Reprise would just put out a nice CD of these for us poor slobs in the U.S. who are still waiting for a second single. Get Ready...and wait.

Second, I was lucky enough to spend part of the summer in London and have clung to Naked Chef broadcasts on the Food Network as a feeble reminder of my wonderful time there. If the U.K. doesn't want him, you can exchange him for me. Just send me the plane tickets and I'll arrange the rest. Please? I promise not to say "pukka."

Oh, did I mention that I've grown to love Rock the Shack? Great interplay between Steven and Hooky...lovely coating of fuzz on the bass and sumptuous cymbal rides. Maybe I just miss my own days in a guitar band, but this is a great track. Viva Get Ready.

Please...let's all try to show some respect for remixers and their creative contributions (excepting, of course, the Supermen Lovers mix of 60MPH, which quite obviously sucks platypus entrails).

In other news, I think Peter Saville has something to do with the folks who make Caffeine Free Diet Coke. I brought home a case yesterday and found an inexplicable red stripe on each side. Maybe we should prepare for a New Order jingle a la Sunkist.

Hmmm...something about Cleveland. We'll, I live downtown, about a stone's throw from the Rock Hall (I haven't hit it yet...my pitching arm's weak). I went in once for a $5 Poe concert but don't expect to return until they open the proposed (by me) My Bloody Valentine wing.

I also live a block away from the Halle Building, which is the stand-in for the Winfred-Lauder building exterior on the Drew Carey Show. Not only that, but I think that's downright cool -- enough so that I'd mention it here in public. (What more proof do you need?!) Oh yeah, the opening of some Harrison Ford action movie (Air Patriot Force One Games) was shot at Severance Hall.

A batallion of Radio City Rockettes stayed next door last month, but I only ran into them at Starbucks in the mornings, where they wore sweatpants and no makeup. I was awakened last summer by screaming pre-teens when NSync's tour bus pulled up in front of the same hotel.

Get Ready is number 15 kazillion on the local airplay charts. We had one good radio station a few years back (The End) which has been replaced by an "urban contemporary" station exclusively playing songs about cell phones, abuse of cell phones by lame-ass boyfriends, and "da chronic." Word, yo.

You can buy Polish Boys from street vendors, and it's legal.

Unlink Pittsburgh with "Y'uns" and Boston with "Wicked," we have no funny turns of speech. None.

We still claim Pere Ubu with pride, though we don't like to talk about Trent Reznor anymore (and vice versa). Don Dixon lives outside of town on a farm, and you might run into Dave Thomas (of Ubu, not Wendy's) at the new Peabody's. Michael Stanley still plays out, although I have no fucking idea who other than his mother would show up.

You European and South American football (soccer) fans would have laughed out loud at the so-called "riot" we had at the last Browns home game. Not one fire was started. Jesus McFuck. (Hey, I mentioned Jesus. Does that make me Jerry?)

I don't know what else to say. I first heard New Order in 1984 and am now old enough that the words "prostate exam" make me wince with the cold ring of truth. How's that for genuine?

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to have against Jamie Oliver, but the thread on his twatiness cracked me up. I honestly didn't realize it was so uncool to like him. As far as remixes, I was shocked that a New Order forum would be so against remixes in general. Some of my most treasured vinyl includes 12" remixes of (don't laugh) Wonderland/Steeltown-era Big Country. This was back in '84, and some uncredited guy was (I assume) flying huge, live drum tracks into an early digital delay/sampler and building these massive audio reworkings. I thought those were astounding, and I've been hooked ever since. Plus, I was sucking up to Mr. Dresden. Send me any excess remix work you can't handle, sir.

As far as Rock the Shack, I feared the worst when I heard that was an honest-to-God title, and Slow Jam? A New Order track called Slow Jam? What the fuck! Is this the Grateful Dead? But what can I say...I've grown to love Get Ready. I love the sound of the guitars...you can just hear the speaker cone buzzing up against a cheap-ass Shure SM-57. I love the mix of live drums and sequencers. And after Republic (aka Your Silent Bass), I'm so glad to hear Hooky amped-up and fuzzed out (he reminds me of me when I was slightly older). Face it, people...this is the same group that recorded Unknown Pleasures. They've grown up, and so will you.

Here's the real deal, kids. I listened to Technique about a billion times before I realized that Run, up until the bridge, is just guitar, bass and live drums. I had always considered Technique (with Fine Time, Dream Attack, and Mr. Disco) an "electronic" record...and New Order is so sneaky, they managed to slip what is basically an acoustic track right in the middle, and the transition is absolutely friggin' seamless. That's the New Order sound. That's technique.

Oh dear :( Loveless, All The Way and Guilty Partner were all really heavily electronic as well, weren't they ? And nobody disses Big Country round here, so nobody will be laughing at your possession of their records.

The problem with New Order remixes is that they have become shit. There is now this compulsion to get any old Tom, Dick and Harry doing them, which not only devalues the original tracks but also pisses off the customer with the quality of the product. Some of the remixes that accompanied the Republic singles were really good, thoughtful and added to the songs. Much of the bilge that has been turned out since in the name of remix isn't fit for public consumption.

What I don't see is the point of the Supermen Lovers mix, except to make the original track unlistenable. Since when does a "dance remix" remove all funk from a track? Um, could you make this less danceable?

And the remixes of The Other Two's Selfish (including Moby's) just plain suck suck suck. I know Digweed's a big name, but you can have his Crystal remixes too. I will try to seek out some other Republic mixes...

I guess everything's a comedown after "The Beach" (the Blue Monday reworking, not the movie!)

After buying the Regret single and then the Republic CD, I pretty much gave up on the other singles. I will track these down...if it's the LAST THING I DO. Cue thundercrack.

Of course you're right...the remix of Subculture is the very reason why CD players include a skip button. What better complement to grim stalker lyrics than...jolly session backing vocalists!

I too was surprised by the general apathy shown here towards club culture and all the support for stuff like PSB's The Cure and Depeche Mode. And those who don't detest remixes don't normally agree on which ones they do like, so now I'm going to disagree with the ones you don't like, I've long championed the Regret(Weatherall mixes) don't think much of the Fire Island ones, also I like the Bedrock Crystal mixes and Lee Combes ones. As for the new ones agree on Superman Lovers being abysmal, like the James Holden, indiferent on the Futureshock one actually change that it's crap. Haven't heard the others yet.

Going back to Republic era mixes, I'd advise avoiding the Ruined In A Day(Reunited in a day K.Klass isn't bad, but not worth seeking out)and for some reason the others are in a style called BOGLE??????? and as for the the World ones(Okenfold and Osbourne shouldn't be allowed in the same dimension as our heroes) and the Brothers In Rhythm mixes are a masterclass in how to produce turds capable of biodegrading faster than you can say bargain bin.

The "on the dole" line is a personal amusement based on an old Saturday Night Live skit, MTV Beach Party UK. Host to punkers: "So, where do you go to school?" Angry punk: "We don't go to school. We're on the dole." So it wasn't that funny, but it's fun to say with a fake accent. My standards for fun aren't high, obviously.

I too have been a bit suprised by the apathy to the mixes, particuarly amongst the younger members. I'd always thought that New Order were the proper band that dance fans - such as my good self - liked. Quite a few of the mixes that have been done for GR aren't actually particuarly bad - just not really geared to the taste of the average fan on this board it seems.

The only 2 really bad mixes that have been released on the cd singles have been the superman lovers horror show (who the fuck is actually going to like that directionless tuneless piece of shit) and the futureshock SLY. The James Holden and Lee Coombs mixes have been the best. Haven't got round to hearing the Gabriel+Dresden mix yet, but I was very interested to read Dave's comments.

Regarding republic mixes, I thought the world and spooky mixes were pretty nice, if a bit cheesey in places, Regret mixes OK, but not really my cup of tea, and I only liked the K Klass RIAD mix.

OK, Gnu, that ALP reference is really making me suspicious.

The problem, Gun, is that you have a writing style that doesn't really seem to resemble that of anybody else I can think of here.

The Reunited In A Day remix of Ruined in a Day is tremendous, as are the mixes of Spooky and World. Let's face it though, a lot have been crap over the years - take Subculture for example, and that was their own fair hands !

Yes, with New Order. I've got an interview with Hooky where he complains about the backing vocals, saying that they were all Barney's idea and that the sound of the remix was not the direction in which he wanted to see New Order heading.
