Some of my most treasured vinyl includes 12" remixes of (don't laugh) Wonderland/Steeltown-era Big Country. This was back in '84, and some uncredited guy was (I assume) flying huge, live drum tracks into an early digital delay/sampler and building these massive audio reworkings. I thought those were astounding, and I've been hooked ever since. Plus, I was sucking up to Mr. Dresden. Send me any excess remix work you can't handle, sir.As far as Rock the Shack, I feared the worst when I heard that was an honest-to-God title, and Slow Jam? A New Order track called Slow Jam? What the fuck! Is this the Grateful Dead? But what can I say...I've grown to love Get Ready. I love the sound of the guitars...you can just hear the speaker cone buzzing up against a cheap-ass Shure SM-57. I love the mix of live drums and sequencers. And after Republic (aka Your Silent Bass), I'm so glad to hear Hooky amped-up and fuzzed out (he reminds me of me when I was slightly older). I listened to Technique about a billion times before I realized that Run, up until the bridge, is just guitar, bass and live drums. I had always considered Technique (with Fine Time, Dream Attack, and Mr. Disco) an "electronic" record...and New Order is so sneaky, they managed to slip what is basically an acoustic track right in the middle, and the transition is absolutely friggin' seamless. Oh dear :( Loveless, All The Way and Guilty Partner were all really heavily electronic as well, weren't they ? And nobody disses Big Country round here, so nobody will be laughing at your possession of their records.

The problem with New Order remixes is that they have become shit. There is now this compulsion to get any old Tom, Dick and Harry doing them, which not only devalues the original tracks but also pisses off the customer with the quality of the product. Some of the remixes that accompanied the Republic singles were really good, thoughtful and added to the songs. Much of the bilge that has been turned out since in the name of remix isn't fit for public consumption.

What I don't see is the point of the Supermen Lovers mix, except to make the original track unlistenable. Since when does a "dance remix" remove all funk from a track? Um, could you make this less danceable?

Although a lot of people liked the Fire Island mix, I really was let down by the Regret mixes, even New Order's. And the remixes of The Other Two's Selfish (including Moby's) just plain suck suck suck. I know Digweed's a big name, but you can have his Crystal remixes too. I will try to seek out some other Republic mixes...

I guess everything's a comedown after "The Beach" (the Blue Monday reworking, not the movie!)

After buying the Regret single and then the Republic CD, I pretty much gave up on the other singles. I will track these down...if it's the LAST THING I DO. Cue thundercrack.

Of course you're right...the remix of Subculture is the very reason why CD players include a skip button. What better complement to grim stalker lyrics than...jolly session backing vocalists!

I too was surprised by the general apathy shown here towards club culture and all the support for stuff like PSB's The Cure and Depeche Mode. And those who don't detest remixes don't normally agree on which ones they do like, so now I'm going to disagree with the ones you don't like, I've long championed the Regret(Weatherall mixes) don't think much of the Fire Island ones, also I like the Bedrock Crystal mixes and Lee Combes ones. As for the new ones agree on Superman Lovers being abysmal, like the James Holden, indiferent on the Futureshock one actually change that it's crap. Haven't heard the others yet.

Going back to Republic era mixes, I'd advise avoiding the Ruined In A Day(Reunited in a day K.Klass isn't bad, but not worth seeking out)and for some reason the others are in a style called BOGLE??????? and as for the the World ones(Okenfold and Osbourne shouldn't be allowed in the same dimension as our heroes) and the Brothers In Rhythm mixes are a masterclass in how to produce turds capable of biodegrading faster than you can say bargain bin.

The "on the dole" line is a personal amusement based on an old Saturday Night Live skit, MTV Beach Party UK. Host to punkers: "So, where do you go to school?" Angry punk: "We don't go to school. We're on the dole." So it wasn't that funny, but it's fun to say with a fake accent. My standards for fun aren't high, obviously.

I too have been a bit suprised by the apathy to the mixes, particuarly amongst the younger members. I'd always thought that New Order were the proper band that dance fans - such as my good self - liked. Quite a few of the mixes that have been done for GR aren't actually particuarly bad - just not really geared to the taste of the average fan on this board it seems.

The only 2 really bad mixes that have been released on the cd singles have been the superman lovers horror show (who the fuck is actually going to like that directionless tuneless piece of shit) and the futureshock SLY. The James Holden and Lee Coombs mixes have been the best. Haven't got round to hearing the Gabriel+Dresden mix yet, but I was very interested to read Dave's comments.

Regarding republic mixes, I thought the world and spooky mixes were pretty nice, if a bit cheesey in places, Regret mixes OK, but not really my cup of tea, and I only liked the K Klass RIAD mix.

OK, Gnu, that ALP reference is really making me suspicious.
