I just happened to watch the New Order story which does a pretty decent job at paying tribute to the great man.

Watching 24pp and how they celebrate his life is also pretty moving as well.

Just to hear him sing "Transmission" again would be sublime.

Rest In Peace, Ian. You were a legend and will never be forgotten. A young life cut way too short but a legacy that lives forever on.

The whole reason I even got started on countless Hasselhoff-related threads and "you vote" bollocks on this website was because a buddy of mine played "Love Will Tear Us Apart" back in '97 or '98, and I've been a fan ever since. So obviously Ian has a lot to answer for :D

May 18th marks the 25th anniversary of Ian Curtis' death. He is one of the most influencial, most gifted figures in music, and he is very important to me personally. One thing when listening to Ian Curtis singing, other than that voice, is his lyrics are so honest, they are so real. It's bone-chilling. He put so much of himself into what he was singing and what he was writing, it leaves an emotional impact on the listener. His lyrics are very identifiable.

I'm not saying shut yourself in your room and listen to Joy Division music all day. But maybe, when you're waiting in line for Star Wars, turn to a few Joy Division songs on your I-Pod. Ian Curtis was a powerful singer, a masterful writer, a mind-blowing performer on stage...he was a visionary. Thank you Ian, for your legacy. Rest in Peace.

The world is a sadder, smaller place for your absence but your legacy lives on forever. I try and raise a glass to his memory at some point on the 18th May every year and the day features a totally JD soundtrack.

So far today it's been the complete Peel sessions, Preston and Le Baines Douche and later it will be Substance, Closer and Still to finish.

No, Natalie was only little when her dad left this realm. There's an interview with her in the April issue of Mojo where she says she was brought up to know who her dad was and the special gift he had and she's very proud of him. She works as a photographer in Manchester now and is in regular contact with Bernard, Hooky and Steve.

the reason I decided to start singing, instead of just playing guitar. thank you Ian Curtis, I'll be playing Closer for awhile now, maybe even sing or jam on the guitar for a bit to some Joy Division. Rest in peace IC.

I started listening to Joy Division properly a year ago and ive been hooked to their music ever since. I bought Unknown Pleasures and Closer initially then ended up gettin still, substance and warsaw LP. Their music was truly inspirational, it got me into playing guitar properly. Ian Curtis was a legend, shame he couldnt overcome his problems too see how influential he is. Man im so hooked on listening to Joy Division on my ipod i gotta stop, it distracts me from revising for GCSEs

Anyhows, RIP Ian Curtis.

Also out of the general interest, anyone on here similar age who listens to Joy Division, cos my friends hate them lol. (Im 16)

Just finished Stroszek, dare I listen to The Idiot now? It's a pretty grim film, if only BBC2 had shown It's A Wonderful Life that night, things could have turned out so differently.

how is Ian's daughter, even when she knows about her father? I hope it wasnt as painful her and help her through the tough times. My thoughts are not only for Ian but for whom he touched in his life.

Just got back from BBC 6 Music's Transmission event in Manchester. They played all known video recordings of Joy Division on the big open air screen in the centre of town.

The sound was crap as A) the source material was very old and mostly of old tape bootleg standard and B) the surrounding buildings bounced the sound around.

However, close to a thousand people turned up! The crowd was a real mixture too - from indie kid teenagers to grey-haired original fans.

Listened to Substance 1977-1980, Heart and Soul (the Boxset) from end to end, followed by 'Still'

I'm not sure that I should listen to Movement now, but I think it would be right. Perhaps I'll start with IALP and Ceremony...

It was somewhere in 1988, I already was a Smiths and Depeche Mode fan, so I knew there could be good music. I liked True Faith but I thought Touched was a bit too stupid and I hadn't the time to investigate until then. I knew New Order had been Joy Division and one day I'd have tried them as well. I was juust busy discovering The Sugarcubes... But EVERYTHING changed that night I couldn't sleep and turned on my earphones radio on a small local indie station which is sadly no more. I knew there was good music around, I knew New Order were alright, but nothing had prepared me for the immense emotional impact of that song. Who are these? Who are these?! The fookin DJ must say it! Please don't put the commercials now... aaah, yes, the song ends and the DJ is gonna speak... "And these were Joy Division, Twenty Four Hours, live from Still". Fookin hell, so these are Joy Division! The day after I ran into my record shop and bought Still and Joy Division became immediately my favourite band. Unknown Pleasures and Closer were so powerful it took me more than one year to accept New Order's evolution and become an even bigger fan of them. Thank you Ian, I think you could have split the vocals with Bernard in the 80s evolving Joy Division... you could have left him songs like Perfect Kiss or BLT, while your voice would have been perfect for Blue Monday... Hooow - does it - feeeel? Yeah, would have sounded cool.

So this is permanence....

Listening to Closer again before moving on to some of the better bootlegs.

The whole Natalie thing. I have a friend who lost his father to a heart attack when my friend was 2 or 3 years old. The only memory he has of his father is the ambulance taking him away. Even this he is not sure of for it could be something his mind fabricated. I know she is proud of Ian and perhaps has come to peace with the suicide. But I bet there was anger, the denial of something every person should have, a father. Denial by selfish reasons. I lost my father when I was 34. I cannot fathom having grown up without him because of his decision to kill himself. I just feel sorry for her.

I was there too, just making a thread now. I couldn't hear barely anything on the Wired TV special. And I had some bitches next to me who decided to talk through most of it. They left just before Atmosphere, when some person to the left of me decided to use his mobile to ring a friend up and talked to him during the whole song. They also cut short four songs they played in a row, I forgot which ones but it included Autosuggestion. I also found my picture on the manchesteronline.co.uk site.

I only heard about it at 7ish last night, i only live in Sheffield and was working in Salford this morning so could have holiday inn`d it! Oh well, just about to set off for London and Digital/Re: Order

You sure the songs that were cut short (such as Autosuggestion) weren't from HATYM and were cut short because the cameraman ran out of film for each one?

Listening all day yesterday and today full blast on tape deck in truck to "Closer" and "Amsterdam" (bootleg)...

Something really weird happened on the 18th at place I work. I was making a delivery and walked into a waiting room and a pile of used magazines of all sorts was laying on a courter to be given away for patient reading.

First one on top as I pushed the cart along was the latest SPIN issue with the article on Ian and JD...like it was waiting for me...all on the 18th!!
