John Denver sued the Ords (and won) for Run2 coz it sounded like his tune 'Leaving in a Jet Plane'
Hang on.. hasnt Denver gone missing (presumed dead) coz he flew off in his own plane never to be seen again.

Yes it was ironic. But nevertheless I am not amused by that fact. Run2 sounds nothing like LOAJP IMHO
well..it wasn't exactly a jet plane that Denver left the world in...but his way of passing does seem to suggest that God does, indeed, have a sense of HUMOUR!!!

One thing I've never understood in all this is why it's only Run2 that sounds like Leaving On A Jet Plane. Surely the original Run must sound like it too?

Yeah, all versions are now credited to JDenver & NO
Anyway its fair - the chord sequence is the same - or close enough
For example - play the technique version of RUN & sing this:
'So kiss me and smile for me. Tell me that you'll wait for me. Hold me like you'll never let me go. '
over the first guitar break - starts at around 30 seconds.
I hate to admit it, but the chords are too similar :dead:

I never saw the problem with this. Have a listen to the charts - US, UK, Australian, etc. and spot the tracks that have been INTENTIONALLY lifted from previous ideas.
If you wanted to go into chord progressions, then I'm sure that Mozart would be suing most bands in the charts now if he was alive...
Everything is lifted from something else - either intentionally or unintentionally - there's a finite number of chords and a finite number of combinations (albeit a huge one)
Enjoy the music for what it is.
I would say that I hope John Denver rots in his grave, but then...

Well if that was indeed the case, said song DID resurface on "The Best Of New Order" didn't it? So there goes that theory out of the window. But it gets more intriguing....the version on the aforesaid "Best Of" is titled as "Run2" on the sleeve and everywhere else, and indeed includes the John Denver publishing company Cherry Lane Publishing as a credit, but as we all know, that version is the original "Run" off Technique. So that probably explains the clause then - in that the "Run2" version would never see a CD release, but here the title was simply used to conceal the original album version of the song......
Besides, if at anytime in the future they DID want to issue the limited 12" versions on a CD and not have to cough up more royalties, they could always completely retitle it to something else to fool everybody......call it something like Sunbeam, or Like A Juggernaut or whatever..... 
Yes the song tutled Run2 on The Best Of is indeed only Run. Don't know why this happened.
Anyway it is availiable on at least one boot that I know of Out Of Order features the 12".

yes indeed he did sue the ords as you put it,steve morriss claimed that it was new orders contribution to putting denver on the space shuttle to be the first musician in space,which was actually on the cards prior to his death. although ive never been a fan of denver he was quite a character in real life and far from being a prick. back in the eighties he fought to keep artistic freedom within art/music ect as at the time the far right in america was on the war path on popular music by either censoring what could be put on a record or as is now the case parental guidence stickers slapped on them,this was brought about by some high profile cases at the time namely the judas priest one springs to mind. i dont think that new order ripped him off as such but thats pop music for yer,they all rob each other in some form or another and new order was just unlucky to get caught out. if it hadnt been released as a single i doubt it would have been an issue.
on a lighter note,denver once entered a "john denver soundalike" contest which he lost?,came 3rd in fact,one of the judges told him,"close son but no cigar". now that is bonkers:D :D

Actually, that was Al Gore's wife, Tipper who spearheaded the censorship campaign. I don't think anyone would consider her far right. ;)
Why did they re-name it Run2 anyway?
Run2 on the 12" is the same as Run on Technique, isn't it?
The Extended Version, remixed by Scott Litt, had extra beats and stuff which adds well to the overall mix. Probably like both versions equally. Wish the Scott Litt mix was available on CD, but still have a decent vinyl copy so all is not lost...

Run 2 is not the same as on Technique. The single version has an extra chorus.

yeah, that was bizarro Tipper - she may not represent the far right, but it had a right wing vibe to it.

Did you know that SM did a cover-version of JDs LWTUA? A nice Disco-Version, mainly instrumental - lyrics shrunk to the refrain... Sometimes it is creepy how similar those two bands are... Perhaps worth a topic "Behind closed doors"...

The whole subject of Run2 got me logged on to this website for the first time last year (if I could dig out the thread I would) and it is one of those annoying NO grey areas - listing Run2 on the (best of) New Order still winds me up to this day since if they can put it on there, why couldn't the real thing have been slapped on to RETRO? 
I've got the 12" but not the means to convert it to mp3 so I now lie prostrate in the shape of a shameless newbie grovel to anyone who could kindly sort me out with this. 
Would really appreciate this since it would complete my 'Technique2' comp (which is nowt special, just a very basic re-working ofthe original with as many variants as possible in celebration of that great LP.)
