Anyone own the official TBTHOG CD single?

How many of you own the official out of print CD single of TBTHOG that came out sometime in 1988 and 1990? It's a black card board fold out jacket, and it's got the original 12" version, as well as the 12" of Temptation and the dub mix of Confusion. I picked it up sometime in 1990, at a store called Aaron Records in Hollywood.

I feel pretty special owning this, as it's nearly IMPOSSIBLE to find nowadays even on ebay! I think this is my most played and most enjoyed New Order single ever. The production on Barney's vocals and how clear his voice is as he comes out the game with "I was standing by the ocean when I saw your face I couldn't look at you.....I guess you knew it but never realized, that we we're threw."

Man....this is the song that GOT ME INTO NEW ORDER! A flawless track and a helluva rare single.

Not sure but I don't think the original 12" version is on anything else, is it?

too bad the Temptation cut is the fucking rerecording. but yeah i like the single anyway

Bought it back sometime when i first got a CD player 1988.Was one of the fist CDs i owned along with the Cocteaus Pink Opaque compilation.

Irritated me back then that the "Original" mix of Temptation wasn`t Original

i found my copy last year for a very reasonable $1.99! Still in great shape. whoever had it before me, kept it in a plastic sleeve.

i got the true faith cdv but had to order it especially so didn't get it at the time so can't say if if was the first or not.

i thought egg was the first though?

no i'm from rishton,i used to buy all my new order stuff fron astonishing sounds in blackburn,but i remember all the new order 12inches hanging from the ceiling in marys,never any imports though if i remember rightly

(the best of) cd does have TBTHOG on it but it only credits Thieves Like Us as "Written by New Order & Arthur Baker". But some people here claim that somewhere there is a credit for him as co-writter... Maybe Salvation soundtrack. Well, there was the US promo CD for True Faith that was released at the time the single was released. TBTHOG was the first commercial CD single that was released simultaneously with its vinyl counterpart. Substance was released at the same time as the vinyl (although it may have been delayed by a week or two - common in those days). Can't remember when EGG CD single was issued though and no dates are given to clue us in.

So when did the True Faith cdv come out? The same time as Substance? I am pretty sure though that Touched was their first cd single.

Touched was their first official CD single, released in UK, AU and Japan in late 1987. Not long after Substance I think?

The True Faith CDV came out later than the vinyl release, 1988 or 1989 depending on who you read, although I suspect it was 1988, close to the BM88 CDV.

Someone mentioned EGG CD, that was a re-release from 1990. Similarly, the US BLT CD Maxi came out well after the event in 1994. The Facus 1981-1982 EP released on CD in Canada in 1989.

There was a nice US CD5 promo for True Faith that appeared in 1987 featuring an exclusive mix. They still fetch a decent price on eBay.

I somehow managed to pick up a copy of Substance on CD in Woolworth's on the Saturday before the official Monday release date.

I remember it well because I had a Saturday job at Tesco and I would always pop up to Woollies to browse their music department at lunchtime.

When I saw Substance I had to rush back to borrow some money off my mate because it cost more than my day's wages...!!!

As for the TF CDV, I don't think any of them made it to Aus so I can only speak from research rather than first-hand info. Although, I do fondly remember the day I picked up my TF 12" upon release from Dada Records, and the anticipation of lowering the stylus for the first time.

Different sites list the TF CDV release date as different months and years but I'm yet to see one list it as the same time as the TF vinyl.

I'm sure TLV can shed more light on this if he wanders by.

I bought my CDVs circa 1989 from Virgin in Oxford Street. Now I ham happy! The BM88 one is worth lots!

I got a True Faith cdv in our only formerly independant record shop when new. It only cost about the same as a nomal cd single. Unfortunately it now is a JB.

On both the Touched single and 12" the credits read "written and produced by New Order mixed by Arthur Baker".

On the Salvation soundtrack the credit reads " New Order/Arthur Baker".

On The Best Of & International as far as I can see only New Order are credited.

I hope that helps. I only wonder what happened to Arthur Baker's credit on the compilations.

I found a copy of both the TBTHOG card foldout & Round & Round Japan cd single with the remixes at a second hand cd store on the same day here in Melbourne around 6 or 7 years ago, they were both about 4 or 5 dollars each, got very excited when i saw them sitting there i can tell you!

The version on International is the "Twelve Inch Mix" from the CD single & 12" vinyl. The "Remix Version" on some copies of Salvation! is an exclusive dub version. Essentially, it's Touched by the Hand of Dub with an extra 2 1/2 minutes at the beginning.

10 us cents, second hand video game and cd shop in d.c. or southern maryland a couple of years ago. 10 friggin cents! and the confusion remix is worth every penny. i had never liked the 87 version at all, but then i got this. 87 still not better than the o.g., but the remix is right up there.

I got the TBTHOG CD single in 1997 as a spotty sixteen year old and it is one of my most treasured CDs. I also found the Japanese CD single last year very cheaply so got a crackle free Touched by the Hand of Dub - that made me very happy.

I'm sure they released Substance directly on cd, because i was there the first day it came out. I'm pretty sure Brotherhood came out directly as well, I remember ordering the import in late '86.

I have this single. I'd say it's pretty rare these days and I never seen it in the shops. I didn't get it until 1997 or 1998, courtesy of a NOOL friend who found it for me! Cheers, Dan, if you are still around here!

I'll have to dig out the article. But the recording process was quite funny. Apparently according to the band Arthur Baker kept standing over them like a madman urging them to do something. New Order just don't normally work like that. Somehow however,they managed to write and record that song in record time.

Well, if (1) it doesn't read that we co-wrote the song and (2) on (the best of) cd there is no credit for him as co-writer (only for Thieves Like Us), so (3) I suppose he has done anything but written it...

I'd get at least some sort of copy so you don't damage the cd single by accident.

In terms of a sound comparison. I'd have to say I've never done one. They both sound ok to me.

I can not answer that question. Just go and buy it (Internationa). It surely can't cost that much, even in your part of the world, and then you can answer your own question. Personnaly I don't even play my single anymore, as it is too precious.

It depends on your speakers, your cd player, the amp, etc. If you've got a top notch system, then I'd say you MIGHT notice a slight difference in quality. Otherwise there's not much to compare. Be happy with your single. Or buy 'International' and see for yourself.

No, I had Substance on vinyl! It was a double LP but no B-sides so I bought the CD as well and the sleeve for the vinyl I use as artwork on my wall.

I had my first discman in 1987 or 88 and it had this HUGE battery pack, it was so funny. It was as big as an Oxford Concise Dictionary!

I have the TBTHOG CD too! Love it.
