Best 2nd single from New Order

The choice is a bit limited.

i suppose you could count Bizarre Love Triangle as the second single from the Brotherhood period, if you count State of the Nation as the first single, even thou they left it off the vinyl edition

Round & Round........by far.

i forgot to tell why. I think R&R did extremely well for Technique, because it confirmed what the first single showed to the world.

Those to singles were both excellent tracks, and potential chart climbers.

Exactly! I'm surprised by myself, I actually voted Jetstream. I thought voting Round And Round was obvious, but then I had to admit to myself I actually prefere Jetstream! I don't know, Round And Round is great but has never been one of my top songs, maybe because on Technique it's just buried under the weighth of much better songs... something doesn't make it a pefect song... there are great things, the keyboards, the rhythm, the sequencers, the verse... maybe it's the chorus which is just too easy, much easier than the funk soul pop of Jetstream, which is a bit more oblique, when you think about it... Jetstream almost reminds me of the Happy Mondays, and has that powerful spelling J - E - T, which works for me... the fact there are at least a couple of better songs on the album just tells you how good WFTSC is... The R&R chorus is just a bit too triumphant (though the lyrics are much darker than the cheery Jet), it's the tune which goes too singalong-like, a bit like some Pet Shop Boys songs... it's so catchy it is too much... That said, I still love the song, and indeed the other tracks of the poll are totally out of competition... And yes, the Ross performance of Jet is even better than the single, because it's so wonderfully insane...

Well, the 12" is OK.

Out of those it's definately R&R, although atm i'm quite bored of it as i've listened to it a lot. Infact, i'm bored with most of NO's music atm after listening to it constantly for weeks, going to give it a break for a while then come back to it :)

Round & Round for me, I do remember thinking when Low-life was out and hearing that Sub-culture would be the second single, the clerk at Ooze and I looked at each other and wondered why.

I voted for "Sub-culture" cause i've always really liked the album version of "Sub-culture" I always thought the single version was suppossed to be really funny, the silly female vocals singing about Bernard masturbating... c'mon, what could be absurd! and the over the top 80s synths seemed to parody contempories at the time.

what i liked most at the time when the 12" came out was the "industrial-ish" hard beats, especially the parts when beats seem to get out of control... i thought that was hella cool

State of the Nation is not on Brotherhood... it's a CD bonus track, so it doesn't count !

yeah, but the Saville artwork for both singles are both in the Brotherhood abstract style... i always grouped them together, not that it really matters much. actually its no real big loss if people forget "State of the Nation" anyway...

I know it doesn't make it the best or anything, but curiously (you wanting it or not) Jetstream got the highest chart position of a 2nd single from any NO album: 63 Sub-culture - Nov 1985 21 Round & Round - Mar 1989 22 Ruined In A Day - Jul 1993 29 60 Miles An Hour - Dec 2001 20 Jetstream - May 2005 :D

Ooh, I'd have to say Subculture, but Round and Round is a close second. I still haven't warmed up to Jetstream yet.

R & R - because it is clearly the best song of the aforementioned 2nd singles, more like second class singles. "we're not top flight, but we'll get you by"

i really LIKE 60MPH, but there aren't many songs by ANYONE, ANYWHERE that can compete with R&R

round & round. it's one of their best dance songs and hooky's bass woven through it makes it even better.
