The Perfect New Order set?!

I know everyone's whinging about the choices they're making at this year's gig, but you have to admit there's definitely method in their madness.

With HNYWD being dropped at Hurricane they're now just playing the THREE most obvious tracks from the new album - ie. the three singles (presuming WFTSC is indeed the 3rd track lifted).

Add to that the THREE most obvious single choices for the general public (and not necessarily genuine New Order fans, per se) - Blue Monday, Toothache, BLT.

Add to that the THREE most obvious Joy Division tracks - Atmos, Transmish, LWTUA25.

Then THREE songs for the 'ardcore, which still cross over into the main arena for people who don't live and breath New Order - Crystal, Regret, Temptation.

And then chuck a fast album track in the mix (Love Vigilantes) and a slow album track for their copyrighted 'chillout' section in the middle (Run Wild) and you've got a decent setlist to work from.

You know, it's almost like they actually THOUGHT this one through!

Don't expect anything to change at Hyde Park if I'm being honest, though it would be good to see SLC and KW1 re-introduced into the melting pot. Depends what their time constraints are, I guess?

We're fairly sure Hooky was taking the piss when he mentioned Lonesome Tonight and AOC for Hyde Park, right?

Move away from the spliff.

A most interesting thread and well thought through.....is that really you Al? :skeptic:

Did he say Hyde Park, or just 'Europe' in general? I'm not convinced, just expect them to flesh out the set with She's Lost Control and KW1. Still a good set, mind.

I'll stick to words of one sy-lla-ble from now, I promise, just for you, Shug! :thumb:

Cheers, being serious fer a minute though, I really hope Road To Ruin comes back into play. I thought it was brilliant in Barca, and I've like the versions I've heard on the boots from the other shows. I've been campaigning on me signature for over a year now for AOC, I'll be keeping ma fingers crossed for the proper tour when the next album's released then:wink:

Said this in the 'other' forum. Jo went to Barca / Lisbon knowing next to nowt about the Order and the one song she could singalong to when we got back was indeed HNWYD.

It's still rather poor though (when compared to the greats!).

Looks like I won't be missing much. Thinking about it, as opposed to just doing what they want to do seems to lead to mediocrity. There's still a lot of great songs in there but it hardly creates an essential experience.

there was a thread bemoaning their predictable choice of set at the NME awards, and someone accused someone else of wanting something approaching the following....

Walk on, play Hurt 4 times blow the machines up make a half assed stab at an accoustic song, before realising Barney doesn't know it. call veryone cunts walk off. ......ladies and gentlemen ^^ I give you , the PERFECT NO set.

as for crappy choices. 2 reasons....

  1. lazy shites have only had a few songs reprogrammed FOR them to play live. So until their studio slaves rewrite all our faves, we wont hear them.
  2. Guys, this may be a shock to my fellow oldtimers, but they aren't on factory anymore. They cannot do as they please, there are suited talent sapping vampires at their elbow every minute saying things like "our study says that playing "The Village" would be pitching the product to the wrong demographic in this territory"....all together now...SUCK SATAN'S COCK. I'm sure they still try to do what they like, but they can't. It's exactly as Tony H Cunt said in NOstory....they run along and get paid on time, and get very bored and very constricted. in short they are now property as much as michael jackoffyourson or britney smegabreath....albeit somewhat better musically.

Whoah there, Mr Campbell. People might accuse you of talking Common Sense!

In Germany on Sunday there was SIX of us over from England and three of the German NOOL Order too. Obviously a fair few other people who were into New Order but 95% of the folks obviously weren't there for said band (Beck, supporting, had a bigger crowd out on the night). Should they be pandering to the minority?! Of the first six tracks they played FOUR were top 10 singles and the other two (Transmish, Love Vigilantes) are as superb a live tracks as you're ever likely to get from New Order. Makes you wonder what people expect from the band these days?!

Acid test is obviously Hyde Park. It's effectively 'their' crowd and almost certainly THE biggest gig of the year so it would be good, as mooted, if they're gonna chuck in the likes of EGG, Age of Consent and Lonesome Tonight and at least try to mix it up a bit. Why they're still not doing Ceremony is beyond me - stirs up the crowd a treat and they've already performed it as their current ensemble. But no way do I wanna see them drop the likes of Crystal, Regret, Transmission, Temptation and Love Vigilantes. Some people here might, I dunno? I certainly do not.

As for Glastonbury, then the rest of the European festivals, it'll be back to the auld formulae I'm afraid. Can't see they've got any choice. Don't understand why other people fail to understand that too?!

it is to an extent their crowd at Hyde Park Al, but there's still all the support acts and such like. It's not like if they were doing Brixton Academy or such like.

Also biggest crowd = they'll want to fcuk up as little as humanly possible - therefore can't see them chucking in any new ones for it.

I like the look of the setlist anyway. However much I'd like to hear a few cuts from technique, the rest just about represents their best tracks (bar Run Wild anyway) so I'm more than happy to take them in again. Surely it's only you lot who go to an insane amount of gigs who could actually get bored of seeing those tracks live?

Question is always, why not alternate JD tracks with other "cult classics"...

They seemed to do it in the US when they switched KW1 and SLC on different gigs.

However, their set is perfect if you see them once.. but I still wonder if I'd prefer 3 NO songs over the JD ones though...

Makes you wonder if they will play Jetstream at Hyde Park, otherwise they'll find another one to add to the set I guess.. if they read us, they might add Turn to their set :evil4:, although I'm surprised Working Overtime hasn't been included in the set yet !

They have the choice to play longer sets, however it's impossible when it's not "their" show of course...

For festivals like Glasto, usual suspects + a few from the latest are obvious choices.

I wonder next year which tracks will survive from WFTSC if they tour for the other album... this complicates things a little in your theory :evil4:

I think the ultimate bottom line, really, is the band needs to nut-up and play 18 or 20 songs. That's still less than two hours - more like 1:45. Maybe not feasible for the festivals, but definitely plausible for their individual gigs. If fooking Styx and Journey can do it... :evil4:

I remember in an interview around the 2001/02 gigs Hooky saying that they went through cycles of being bored with certain songs. He then added "I'm really bored with 'Ceremony' at the minute".

We still shout for it relentlessly until it starts to piss them off though, right?:thumb:

No idea what you mean, Nicos? The only 'truncated' set New Order have done this year was at Coachella, cos they were only allocated an hour. At every festival since they've done (what I consider to be) a 'full' set. There's been cuts though - Atmosphere was in the encore for Southside and KW1 was in the encore for Hurricane, but both were cut.

Can't see them doing any longer at Hyde Park than they are now. If they do stretch it out, perhaps include KW1 or SLC again?!

They're great songs obv, but it IS disappointing when you pretty much know what you're getting. Obviously gone are the days of the early/mid 80s when they'd play am (almost) completely different set each night, and we all know about the technology issues, but still it's a shame.

I don't believe that the recd company is dictating the set. Obv they will expect the recent singles and Blue Monday, but really there's nothing apart from apathy preventing them from springing the odd surprise. There's absolutely nothing stopping them from throwing in one or two 'unprogrammed' classics like AOC, Lonesome or a surprise from the JD catalogue. A 'Shadowplay' or a 'New Dawn Fades' would be the biz.

My hopes are set no higher than Ceremony for Hyde Park.

Also - what about Who's Joe? Have they played this live yet. What a song! This screamed 'set-opener' to me the first time i heard it.

And another thing....why not Working Overtime? No pesky compeuters required for that one.

Al when you put it like that i suppose it could be considered the perfect set. But as a first timer in oakland i still went home a bit disappointed. I might be ungrateful, and just to have sees the Order before it was too late is something in itself, but thats how i felt.

I'm going to print this brilliant post out and take it with me to Glastonbury. If I start to have too much of a good time and consider not going to HP, this will remind me not to be so stupid!

Regret Age Of Consent (Fingers crossed) Ceremony (Ditto) Waiting For The Sirens Call Sunrise 24 Hours Perfect Kiss Subculture Round & Round 1963 (No chance for above 5) Love Will Tear Us Apart

Blue Monday Bizarre Love Triangle True Faith (Original version) Run (I don't see why not it was played one off in 1998) All Day Long (This just seems like a great closer, I think it would work better than KW1)

Al, you say they don't have any choice but to play the same set? Uh, who writes the setlist? Execs at the label or members of the band. You have to stop making excuses for their lazy, "professional" approach. They can play anything they wish, they CHOOSE to play the same set night after night.

If the choice would be EGG or Transmission+LoveVig I'd certainly prefer EGG. Crystal and Temptation are a must-play IMHO, Regret could be left for something like Dream Attack...

And, did anyone notice they don't play Touched anymore? Anyone missing it? I am definitely not.

Touched was awful live. Now they need to ditch BLT or at least start playing the album version or 7inch edit instead of the fully preprogrammed remix they mime nowadays.

Check out your setlists, Brian. They haven't played the same setlist twice this year. Which is more than can be said of them from say, ooh, 12 years ago, yes?!

First time I've heard New Order called 'professional' as well. I know you like your pitch-perfect concerts and Barney singing splendidly but I ain't witnessed that once this year, and you certainly didn't at the first two gigs on this tour. It's just plain old New Order, warts and all. Love 'em. Or loathe them.

What's the source of these 'mooted' new (old) songs for Hyde Pk? Have they said something, or is just wishful thinking?

This is the first new order show i attended. I would be happy still with this setlist. But im still dying for thieves like us.

They can play EGG with the current setup that plays temptation, no mor work required.

My set, if I employed them to play for me...

Movement PCL LowLife Brotherhood Technique Republic Get Ready (-one or two tracks) WFTSC ( likewise)

But seriously

The Village Confusion Someone like you EGG Ultraviolence Ceremony Round and Round Run Wild 586 Crystal

Lonesome Tonight Leaders of Men/no love lost (NO play NLL awesomely) Hurt...into here to stay

THAT I'd like to hear.

They can easily do a 25 song setlist but it won't be more than 18. I'd love to hear some Technique stuff and plus Thieves Like Us and Perfect Kiss

Al please don't call "Toothache" for me it is one the best new order song along with blue monday

The Lisbon (I was there and I liked it but...) set was: Love Vigilantes, Crystal, Regret, Hey Now What You Doing, Krafty, Transmission, Run Wild, She's Lost Control, Waiting For The Sirens' Call, Bizarre Love Triangle, True Faith, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Temptation, Atmosphere, Blue Monday.

Not very different from the Barcelona or US. But they only have played SLC because hooky liked the Ian Curtis T-shirts on the front row. I think Barney didn't want to play SLC.

If I have to decide I put TBTHOG instead of Tempetation beacause they play tempetation all the time (in all the live recordings). Run Wild it´s not well placed on the live act and could be changed with Vanising Point or Round and Round because technique it's probably their best album and not even a song is played live.

Who's Joe? or Turn are stronger songs than Hey Now What You Doing.

They have to play Here To Stay someday.

And hooky someday will play Dreams never end again

So this is my perfect set: Love Vigilantes, Crystal, Regret, Who’s Joe?, Krafty, Transmission, She's Lost Control, Waiting For The Sirens' Call, Vanising Point, Bizarre Love Triangle, True Faith, TBTHOG,Here To Stay, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Atmosphere, Blue Monday and Dreams never end.
