Well it seems everybody seems to dislike Blue Monday. I cannot understand it, and nobody seems to state their reason for disliking it. Kraftwerk thinks its genius, and who Im i too disagree with them. Ive never been sick of this track.

So let this be a thread for your reasons of not liking Blue monday.

This is easy. It's bad, dirgy, atonal song with no warmth, harmony or any of the things that we know and love NO for. It's also 5 minutes too long. Why Temptation never got to BM's level is beyond me. It's far and away the better dance song.

It bores me to death and I can't even dance to it and it's supposed to be a dance track, right? And I can't hear the bloody guitars. :D In a word, overrated!

Too overfamiliar for fooks sakes. I don't like listening to it for the simple reason that if you go to any townie disco or roadshow (or indeed any party in a hotel or pub where the DJ is an utter wanker) chances are the only New Order tune they have and will play is...Blue Monday.

Fuck me, its one of the greatest ever dance records ever produced. Changed my fucking life that record, and alot of other people who went out clubbing in the early eighties within the United Kingdom. It was Blue Monday or Duran Duran dirge. I love the record, in fact I heard it on Saturday night at the local, still sounded fresh.

I agree, it does sound fresh still. Hooky's bass still gives me chills down my spine. I could dance to it anytime. Sometimes, i think Blue Monday is new order's attempt to write a kraftwerk tune. I honestly think they succeed. If Blue Monday is without feeling, then so is kraftwerk.

People do actually like it (or did). The reason everyone seems to hate it today though is because it's the biggest selling 12 inch and it's either been over played to the point that the song has no real value, and also because they always play the song live because of it's commercial success.

I still think the songs great, and listen to it when I feel like it. It's always going to be one of their classic tracks. Actually, now this thread has reminded me of it, i'm gonna listen to it now.

i think a lot of the remixes have kept it fresh. The kylie mingoue one, and 2 many djs stand out in my mind. The one on retro is a rather disservice.

Even the band is sick of it.

Tells you all ;)

but they keep on playing it, i dont think they are force to. I know they stated this but their actions speak otherwise.

You just can't do a gig and don't play your biggest hit... probably 50% of the people are there to hear the greatest hits (if not more), you must please the crowd...

when has new order give a shit about pleasing the crowd? Plus their sick of playing ceremony doesnt mean its a crap song?

Blue monday is a good song but i get tired of people constantly referring to it when they talk about New order, and i listened to it so much when i first heard it that its now quite tiresome.

It has never sounded very good live to my ears, although a case can be made for when it morphed into Love Reaction once :evil4:

Well, people don't think it's crap (Digital Mike aside), usually there are just sick of hearing it...

That's mostly it.

But at least live they are trying to change it at each tour... Billy Corgan added guitars to it in 2001, then it's the Kylie samples in 2005...

The reason people dont like bm is simple,it really has been played to death and re-released far to many times. the mixes on the 95 version were utter shite,in fact i dont think i have heard a good remix of bm. However its still nice to hear it sometimes in places that you wouldnt expect to hear it.

i don't dislike blue monday, i'm just tired of hearing it. it's an impressive song that changed electronic and dance music, and i've got a lot of respect for it--i've just heard it far too much.

that doesn't mean i never want to hear it again, though! ;)

I'm with the 'still sounds fresh' camp on this one.

BM got me into NO & its still a favourite, not one I listen to often - more one i return to as an old friend

I don't agree with this... I enjoy the Hardfloor mix and the Jam & Spoon Manuella Mix.

In fact, those are probably the only 2 I can listen to these days!

I still like it, and still have a habit of giving it on CD-R to DJ's if they don't have it...

Just to keep it interesting, im very tired of true faith. I know i must be in the small minority. I cant really explain it, but its too repetitive. Everybody will tell me that blue monday is.

Yep me too.got sick of it bloody years ago.but i like the live finsbury 511 dvd version with added bits of guitar by phil (the only decent thing he`s done with NO so far!).

it`s only when i hear a cover version by another artist that i appreciate the original again.

yes, i could do without Phil. Sometimes i think they would be better just with some techie expert. Their gigs could be more spontanteous and they could unearth older songs.

Agreed, its too Played-Out, ive heard it a billion times.

being sick of it bears no relevence to the stature of "BlueMonday"

This song is practically the start of an entire genre that comrises all dance music that is not R&B or Soul. Its freaking more than 20 years old and everything in the clubs is based on it.

thats all

I don't like it, never have done. On its release it was the first New Order song I can remember hearing and it put me off listening to anything else they released, either before or a good while after, which is a shame 'cause I like the stuff that pre-dates BM and the stuff after. Could've got some right gigs under me belt if it wasn't for that bloody song.

Love Reaction on the other hand is ace.:thumb:

thats great but the question to those who hate it was why? and i hate it because i am tired of it i dont care what its been doing for 20 years

In 1983 the music in the UK was woeful. Anything different was frowned upon. Everything was pigeon-holed. New Order = Indie, according to most Djs. Ask for New Order in a club, youd get a reply like, "not playing any weirdo stuff tonite, mate", and get thrown out. When BM came out and was first played in clubs, it just blew everything away! Luther Vandross, Lionel Richie, The Kid Fiddler, Shala friggin mar, they never knew what hit em. Mullets in white shirts trapped like startled rabbits in New Orders headlights. I could finally go out to shit provincial clubs in Lowestoft and beam with pride that The Order were filling dance floors safe in the knowledge that the masses would never know who the fcuk they were dancing to and if any of them Mullets dared try to investigate, theyd be put off by New Orders brilliant live TOTP appearance where they played the song stripped right down with Hooky`s Shergold leading the way. Happy Days. And I love the song, but only when I hear the original on 12" plastic.

One New Order fan once told of the night back in around 83 he asked a certain Pete Tong to play Blue Monday in a club but he was dismissed by said DJ who was more into "trendy" stuff like Chaka Khan.Fast Forward 20 years and Tong insists he always was a fan of New Order from the start.I`ve always thought there was something a bit not trustworthy about that guy:nonono:

Dont talk to me about that twat Tong. I got talked into going to Caister Soul Weekend in 1984. His lordship was DJing playing stuff like The Whispers and The Real Thing. I can honestly say, hand on heart, hed never play New Order as long as he had a hole in his arse. I only went to Caister for the "guaranteed shagging", unfortunately I must`ve lost my guarantee!

I really can't see what all this fuss is about...it is a good dance tune today, a GREAT dance tune for it's time, a true first, without which we would not have alot of 'so called' dance tunes today. And it's still the biggest seling 12" of all time...:music:

Blue Monday is the record that had the single biggest impact on my musical preferences - still think it's one of the best tracks ever written, but I've just heard it too many times and I don't think it can ever recover from that over-familiarity - shame really, wish I could hear it for the first time again. Outside of the NO fanbase it will be the one song that everyone else associates with NO in the years to come when they're all dead and buried.

I never quite got BM, seemed a little strange and the vocals didn't seem to sit right. Significantly intrigued to buy PC&L though. Love to know which gigs Jim. Believe i was only at two prior to your first, unless you mean you would have kicked me into gear to travel to more.

the first song that i ever liked of theirs was confusion, released in 1983

Familiarity breeds contempt - respect your elders (unless they smell a bit funny).

it's pure genius and the best track of all time IMO (if not actually my favourite)

It's the Tony Wilson syndrome, you hate it when it's constantly in yer face, but when it's not there, you kinda miss the fucker:D

I have never said I disliked the song either, just sick of hearing it live. Give me the shortened version near the start of the set and I'd be happier.

As has also been mentioned, re-releasing it again in 95 was taking the piss, espescially after we had the Orgy version a year or two before. BUT, the Brain Mix featuring the Sunkist lyrics at the end is a bonus.

A great song that hasnae really dated and helped change Electronic / Dance music, but overkill has put a lot of people off it.

I'm simply fed up with it.

Fcuking brilliant record, just a bit sick of hearing it now.

Thing that makes it worse is its permanent position as 'encore'. Don't understand why they don't swap it around and open with it, or stick it between BLT and Toothache in their (now copyrighted) 'dance' section, or indeed just end with it and stick Temptation in the encore instead?!

Totally agree. It always did make a good opener. I could never understand it in the middle of the set though, either in the 'dance section', at the last part of the main set or the opener would be good places for it. It is too predictable as the encore though.

I'm always gonna love the song itself as I will not forget buying the single and getting it home as gasping at the sleeve design and playing the record and deciding that i needed a newer, louder hi-fi to play it on. I still think it is an innovative, exciting record.

The '88 remix wasn't too clever though.

I think its great, nowhere near my favourite though. Also its the New Order song you're most likely to hear in clubs and despite its over-familiarity its still fun to dance too

i respect the tune and it was one of my first faves, but am now more than a bit tired of it.

also, doesn't really work well live as it kinda drags on a bit. sometimes rockier tunes like 60MPH or Brutal sound better live even though they are less iconic

We all know you love it!

Simple, it sucks the big one live. Also, if you read the NME the other week, there was a article "why we love new order" featuring a load of no bodys, and noel gallagher and the two funny people from little britain. They all said Blue Monday was there fave NO song, so i am quite proud to say that if the cnut from bloc party and that twat from bore patrol love it, then i fookin hate it.

im really surprised that nobody seems to be tired of BLT.

Er, you're joking, right?! :skeptic:

Was once a nasty little bruiser of a song, the current version just pales into comparison.

no, im not joking. Im not sick of it, but i do hear it all the time in the weirderst places. Just a little overexposed. Hear it more around then blue monday.

szwajkos technique wrote: im really surprised that nobody seems to be tired of BLT.

I'm tired of BLT and have been since 1986. Personally I'd love to see a New Order gig without Blue Monday, BLT, Regret, Temptation and True Faith not because I don't like the songs (with the exception of BLT) but I'm just sick of hearing them over and over again. But you can guarantee that every one of those will get played on Friday!

Have always liked hearing it, must admit that I don't listen to it in its entirey when going over a live show every time. And as fcukin' dire as a lot of US radio is, hearing the song, either in the Top 40 format or in an 'alternative' setting, always puts a smile on my face and makes me glad to be a fan of the Order, it still puts a lot of other stuff out there to shame.

I'd swap it live for Here To Stay, or Vanishing Point, but not anything else...

It's New Order's 'Piano Man'.

overplayed, long, boring, old news....

i've never been tired of BLT--it's a fantastic tune all around and i equate it with fond memories of the high school dances we had every friday night (yes, i have good memories of my high school dances!). of course, it was the substance version, which is the weakest, but i'll take it any way i can get it!

So the verdict is: Nooler's dont dislike Blue Monday but are just bloody tired of it.

It always sounds good to me, morning day and night.:music:

I like Blue Monday. But I understand that it's pretty overplayed. What can ya do?

Blue Monday is my top favourite song ever. I think they should spice it up live. It's actually a difficult song, because it doesn't have the vocal hooks of more catchy tunes like True Faith or Perfect Kiss. As far as the main melody goes, it's quite monotone. Even the bass turns around the same two or three notes... What really makes it great are the keyboards: 1: The vocoder gregorian chant, it's too underrated, they always use only the final chord while one of my favourite things is just the arpeggio, I believe it's an F 7th minor in three steps: F F+A F+A+C+E (wow, any hidden message? ;) ) They should play much more with that chord, it's fooking great. 2 There are at least three layers of keyboards building up the final part, and yet live and in remixes we always hear only the final result of those layers, while one of the most exciting things of the song is to hear them one by one and then melting together 3 A good remix like the Hardfloor from 1995 can be used like the Perfecto was used with True Faith with excellent results... I'd also like to hear a live version of the Perfecto World...

perhaps NO should try doing a radically different with blue monday - maybe try something like the lo-fi version john simm was playing in the film 24 hour party people

Oh no, please! It was horrible! New Order is definitely a dance track, I'd rather remix it much harder, like Rotterdam hardcore style, than hearing any acoustic blasphemy...
