'Make Poverty History' - re-distribute the wealth of all the organised religions, depose corrupt African and South American Governments, boycott most multi-nationals and there'd be no need for pompous, self righteous pop stars like Bongo to meddle in politics that they really don't seem to understand... :shades:

The whole thing's bollocks really.

Noble cause and all that but McCartney murdering a shit Beatles song with U2 bumbling away in the background is simply not a competent way of tackling debt relief. Fact. It's really amazing the amount of numpties I've seen (mainly under-18s) on the telly who when asked "Why should they drop the debt?" respond with "They just should, I'm here to make a difference" Great fucking insight eh Sherlock? Got any more cliches? :skeptic: I think 75% of the people at this debacle are there simply to be able to say in 10 years time "I was there" which is a wankerish notion in itself. Any old passing bandwagon will be jumped on. I'd love to see an end to poverty just as any other decent human being would but I've never subscribed to Geldof's finger-pointing guilt trips. There are better ways to tackle the poverty problem in Africa.

Here's a good article on the subject: Why I won't be watching Live 8

I'm so incredibly glad New Order aren't there, it's just a hugely unlikeable smugfest :nonono: and quoting Brotherhood lyrics completely out of context can't change that.

I would like to apologise for even thinking that New Orders latest gigs were a bit below par. I am witnessing possibly the biggest white elephant in musical history. Whoever decided on the acts has a lot to answer for. Dido.. Go home love, put the dinner on. Reg Dwight.. Found another hip boy to latch onto Bonjo... Up his own arse Coldplay... Echo and the Bunnymen must be wondering where it all went wrong Annie Lennox..... Perrrleeeeaaase! She cant believe her luck. The crowd..... "whens Robbie on?" and "oh, I like this one, its off that advert".

You're 100% right, Ally. Except for Stereophonics, they're worth watching.

I think Geldof should fuck off already. Especially after seeing him open up Jonathan Ross, that egotistical prick.

The only good thing about Live 8 is Pink Floyd. :D

Horrible! Turn it off. I love the way they've drafted in Ms Dynamite who hasn't troubled the charts for three years in a bid to attract the "yoot". How fucking out of touch are they?

It's funny cos 20 years ago it was dominated by Rock Dinosaurs and now it's dominated by....the same Rock Dinosaurs!!!!

I'm just back from the city centre and Central Station was just as busy with the various teen gangs as it always is on a Saturday afternoon goths, skate kids, townies...all the tribes were there. Glad to see that at least "the kids" have got the good sense to shun it. The crowd at Hyde Park all look like accountants and tax inspectors (and I fucking hate tax inspectors!).

Anyway, when are The Quo on? That's what it's missing.

Fook me, Delilah, not much of a fan to know the titles, they played 3 songs, that's all I can say to you, sounded fucking amazing. The songs titles were actually written on the screen but as I'm in front of my PC at the moment, looks like my silly eye completely missed it. What a big mess is all I can say. How can horrible music, shallow teenagers, & pompus assholes help the world? I support the One cause, but did anyone see the Bravery's lead singer in the One vid they showed after will smith finished talking? How can he be in it, and there be no New Order in any of this mess? What is the world coming too, solving problems with Bono and other bad music acts. If only John Lennon was still alive.

Fact: a child in Africa dies every three seconds. If fifty thousand people died EVERY DAY in Britain through starvation or AIDS, a national emergency would be declared.

Sitting on here carping saying it does no good etc won't help them. Go to www.live8live.com and add your name to the global petition. Today is about raising consciousness about Africa. If we think we are impotent and can't do anything to help anyone, there really is no hope.

It's ironic that a local church near me has a large Make Poverty History banner outside: this is the very same global corporate entity which insists that Africans cannot be allowed to use condoms and would rather the continent's people died of AIDS than stay alive. Both the Roman church and the established English one are as rich as Croesus so how much are they giving? The true guilt lies with them and the global corporations who continue to trade unfairly.

Like some of the rock stars playing today, we've now way of knowing how much they've given to buy the drugs needed, build the clinics and health centres, provide clean and safe drinking water for millions. I don't want millionaires like Richard Curtis lecturing me because I'm well acquainted with the issues. I would've done what I could in any case but if it gets people to do something it's worth it. The end result is all that matters.

Nevertheless we, as 'ordinary' people, have to do what we can.

Jeepers... It's not just a 'smugfest' - yes some of the bands are cackified but what are the 'better ways'? Politicians only listen when the popular masses are organised - OK, most of them don't understand the socioeconomic politics, but they all know it's about bringing an end to poverty...

2005 sees a unique intersection of politics, emanating partly from the UK (G8 is in Scotland, we're presiding over the EU etc...) and spreading across the world, that means the debt could be wiped and Africa could have a chance to get on it's feet.

Bob didn't want to do all this bloody hard work (he said this himself), but he saw the potential of what could happen if the G8 are pressured at this moment of opportunity - that's why he siezed the opportunity.

Do we want Live8 and billions spent on saving lives or do we want Status Quo (not Francis and Ricki!) and the US spending trillions on it's war budget?!?

And for everyone who says they are glad NO isn't playing - what are you all on? You don't want to go to a free NO concert, you don't think they care about this stuff? Why did they contribute 'Vietnam' to the anti-war album, why do they wear white wrist bands on stage, has anyone listened to 'Love Vigilanties' (yes Vietnam and LV are anti-war - but poverty breeds war) has anyone read the inlay to 'Raise The Pressure'?

WHATEVER!

I see your point, and I agree. It's one of the only ways to fight poverty. But what about fighting the problems in our own countries? I mean, I'm sure we do. And I'm really glad were helping Africa ( as I said before I support One). But I know the US has issues with aids, and poverty. So does everyone else, are we fighting for the world as a whole, or focusing purely on Africa as of right now? Will this be a continued effort, and be this large? I don't know a whole lot, I'm your normal 17 year old. But I'm just think its hard to set a good example and fight for problems other than our own when we need to focus on fixing our own first. I wish New Order were playing! New Order and Paul McCartney would have been cool, I think atleast. I kinda see New Order as the second beatles, thats just my opinion though.

The old 'what about our own problems' argument - yes it's important to also be looking after ourselves; if you want to do that then lobby the US government to stop spending trillions on war. If as much financial effort had been put into creating peace, historically, as has been put into fighting war then Sept 11th would never have happenned. Radical extremism is borne from poverty. If you look at the stats, and the human outcomes, comparing poverty and AIDS in the West with poverty and AIDS in Africa is a little embarassing to say the least...

Like it or not, it's a major event.

However, I didn't watch it, in fact, I totally forgot about this...

But I know there will be a DVD of highlights, so I might go for that...

However, we all know that ending poverty is a goal that will never be acheived unless the whole fookin planet goes on a marxist system where everybody would get the same amount of money...

And this mean, for us, that we would probably lose 75% of our salaries... if not more!

Let's face it, we're not ready to accept that!

So unless we figure how to build food replicators like in Star Trek, making poverty history is not for tomorrow!

As a concert, I had no interest in the bands or travelling to London.

As a TV 'spectacle', i had no interest in watching.

If Neworder had been there, I may have tuned in for a bit but I doubt it, as I was quite busy doing something with my mates.

As a way of helping those dying in Africa, I remain unconvinced that a pop concert will lead enough pressure to cause the cancellation of all debts. And even if it did, there remain the significant obstacles of corrupt governments.

It is true that many of the 'artists' on show will benefit from the exposure gained - how many of them will donate extra sales revenues to charity remains to be seen (PF apart.)

However, raising public awareness and stimulating a million debates such as this throughout the world cannot be a bad thing. Doing nothing would be a bad thing.

The rest is up to the politicians ... such as they are.

hmmm, is not about marxism (besides i´m sure you mean communism, which was based on some points of view of Marx and read through a particular perspective). it´s about getting closer. Sweden, for example, works pretty well because the difference between the richer and the poorer is 5 or 6 times. the difference between a poor african and a rich american is maybe 100,000 times. i always laugh when capitalist-oriented people get scared about someone taking their money away from them. the goal is that everyone could be better economically, educationally, medically, etc. of course that means Britney and co won´t get their 50 million contract but tell me if there´s no justice in that! we lefties want everyone to be better and not poorer. believe me, there´s nothing good about poverty and misery and analfabetism and diseases. what i found more sad about Live8 was the fact that the images shown from Africa were almost the same as Animal Planet or Wild Life. Geldof and friends were showing the african situation the same way as a lion hunting a zebra. it was SO disgusting the way they focused the situation, embarrasing really. and that´s the vision that still remains on the first world eyes from the poor countries so that´s why this situation never gonna change. as far as this vision don´t change too.

Solving the world's problems is more simple that people would have us all believe. If personal wealth was limited to a max of 1 million US dollars, that would be a start... I could go on forever... Try:

Man, the negativity on these boards is incredible. Anything that's even the slightest bit mainstream gets slagged.

Even if some of the people involved are misguided, at least they're still giving their time for a good cause. I thought the Who sounded pretty damned good, and Daltry can still pull off 'the scream' pretty well for his age. Stevie Wonder had annoying guest stars but he sounded good too. And McCartney's drummer rocks so hard it's not even funny.

And Coldplay, what the hell is everyone's problem with these guys? A lot of you begrudge them success for some reason. IMO, they actually make some pretty good records. You want to complain about crap music that's out now? How about Ashley Simpson, Nickelback, Puddle of Creed, Rob Thomas, etc. Coldplay are the LEAST of the problem. If you don't like them that's cool, but some of you are downright hostile about it.

I'd say that this place disses anyone who isn't New Order, but half the time you bitch about how bad they suck too. What are people who don't like NO doing here anyway? Some of us actually *like* music and a bunch of different artists and styles.

But hey have fun being 'cool' and hating everything. :\ohwell:

I'm so poor right now I had to borrow my mother's rent money to keep from being evicted last week; I have enough food to last through maybe next week, and then I'm out. I can't afford to wash my clothes, so they pile up in the laundry. I had to write a hot check to buy a bus pass so I can get to the library. If I get evicted, I can't afford to rent a truck to move my things.

If I can keep it together for another month, I can finish my paper, and graduate, and then if I'm homeless, at least I'll have my degree. Maybe, maybe someday I can some money with it.

If I do make some money, I'm going to enjoy having it, but having money isn't going to change my view that "we" can and should help the poverty-stricken in places like Africa. Donating "my money" isn't the solution; anything I could donate, no matter how much I make in the future, would be a drop in the bucket. Cancelling national debts, changing trade rules that stack the decks against the poor, increasing investments where appropriate, providing appropriate levels of aid where needed-- these are things we can all do together.

If you want to say that's a multi-millionaire lecturing you about poverty, just remember that I said it now, when I've got nothing. I rather doubt that Bono and Geldof were indifferent when they had nothing.

Live8 was about just this- changing the system of aid and loans rather than supplying more of it. It's no good taking out loans to pay off loans as funnily enough the cumalative interest only worsens your finances.
