I'd invite anyone to listen to Pink Floyd's reunion performance and say that they're not on par with New Order.

I would have gone if they had. I almost regret missing Floyd's 4 songs.

As a concert, I had no interest in the bands or travelling to London.

As a TV 'spectacle', i had no interest in watching.

If Neworder had been there, I may have tuned in for a bit but I doubt it, as I was quite busy doing something with my mates.

As a way of helping those dying in Africa, I remain unconvinced that a pop concert will lead enough pressure to cause the cancellation of all debts. And even if it did, there remain the significant obstacles of corrupt governments.

It is true that many of the 'artists' on show will benefit from the exposure gained - how many of them will donate extra sales revenues to charity remains to be seen (PF apart.)

However, raising public awareness and stimulating a million debates such as this throughout the world cannot be a bad thing. Doing nothing would be a bad thing.

The rest is up to the politicians ... such as they are.

what i found more sad about Live8 was the fact that the images shown from Africa were almost the same as Animal Planet or Wild Life. Geldof and friends were showing the african situation the same way as a lion hunting a zebra. it was SO disgusting the way they focused the situation, embarrasing really.

You did notice that they brought a survivor from the famine onto the stage!? If the lion is hunting it's zebra it must be pretty emaciated by now...

Solving the world's problems is more simple that people would have us all believe. If personal wealth was limited to a max of 1 million US dollars, that would be a start... I could go on forever... Try:

I'm sure that all those lovely pop stars who so generously donated their time would agree with your suggestion of limiting their wealth to a million dollars...I personally find it objectionable to be lectured on poverty by a bunch of multi millionaires.

Man, the negativity on these boards is incredible. Anything that's even the slightest bit mainstream gets slagged.

Even if some of the people involved are misguided, at least they're still giving their time for a good cause. I thought the Who sounded pretty damned good, and Daltry can still pull off 'the scream' pretty well for his age. Stevie Wonder had annoying guest stars but he sounded good too. And McCartney's drummer rocks so hard it's not even funny.

And Coldplay, what the hell is everyone's problem with these guys? A lot of you begrudge them success for some reason. IMO, they actually make some pretty good records. You want to complain about crap music that's out now? How about Ashley Simpson, Nickelback, Puddle of Creed, Rob Thomas, etc. Coldplay are the LEAST of the problem. If you don't like them that's cool, but some of you are downright hostile about it.

I'd say that this place disses anyone who isn't New Order, but half the time you bitch about how bad they suck too. What are people who don't like NO doing here anyway? Some of us actually *like* music and a bunch of different artists and styles.

I'm so poor right now I had to borrow my mother's rent money to keep from being evicted last week; I have enough food to last through maybe next week, and then I'm out. I can't afford to wash my clothes, so they pile up in the laundry. I had to write a hot check to buy a bus pass so I can get to the library. If I get evicted, I can't afford to rent a truck to move my things.

If I can keep it together for another month, I can finish my paper, and graduate, and then if I'm homeless, at least I'll have my degree. Maybe, maybe someday I can some money with it.

If I do make some money, I'm going to enjoy having it, but having money isn't going to change my view that "we" can and should help the poverty-stricken in places like Africa. Donating "my money" isn't the solution; anything I could donate, no matter how much I make in the future, would be a drop in the bucket. Cancelling national debts, changing trade rules that stack the decks against the poor, increasing investments where appropriate, providing appropriate levels of aid where needed-- these are things we can all do together.

Live8 was about just this- changing the system of aid and loans rather than supplying more of it. It's no good taking out loans to pay off loans as funnily enough the cumalative interest only worsens your finances.

As for raising awareness, every day I walk past a fair trade shop and HMV and the Virgin Megastore...which of those do you think has done more business as a result of Live 8?
