Can anyone tell me what the song "1963" is all about? Is it about Bernard's brother or something? Or a childhood friend who pulled a prank on him?
Whats "1963" about?

Someone with common sense! A rarity...
And for the lazy ones:
1963 is the year John F. Kennedy was murdered. The song is about a theory that the shot was directed to Mrs. Kennedy so JFK can live with Marilyn Monroe.
i still havent worked out that video. whats jane horacks struggling with her suitcase into manchester down the canal has to do with it or with jfk![]()
This one crops up so often on this forum, that I now have the correct meaining of the lyrics saved as a text file to copy and paste as and when required. The gist of the previous threads is as follows...
The comments about 1963 and JFK was just Barney talking generally about the year 1963, and JFK, not the song.
There was an online streamed interview at the time Get Ready was released (an interview from GetMusic. To hear the interview just follow this link http://www.getmusic.com/calendar/audiochats/neworder/index.html and click on Hear The Chat Now) and a fan emailed in the question about the lyrics to 1963, and Barney just said it's a song from the point of view of a wife, being shot by her partner Johnny, then him going on to get another wife. The interviewer was a complete twat. Barney explained "1963" lyrics, saying that is a fictitious story about a man who kills his wife and the guy went "It sounds like an Eminem track to me". Really embarrassing.
The description he gives in that book where he makes reference to JFK doesn't marry up with the lyrics, as that would mean JFK shooting his missus, then remarrying, wouldn't it?
Hope that clears it all up, once and for all - although I'm sure someone else will be posting this question again in the near future!

It's the fifth or sixth time you post this and I'm sure it won't be the last one. ![]()
And just to prove that he can't make up his mind about anything, here is Barney offering another explanation from the 'New Order Music 1981-1989' book...
"1963 is the year that J.F.K. was S.H.O.T. and my theory is that he actually arranged for the gun man, Lee Harvey Oswald to shoot his wife, Mrs. K. so that J.F. could do one with M. Monroe who committed suicide when she found out Oswald had hit the wrong target. Oswald was later shot by his boss (don't know his name) for doing such a bad job and causing his hit-man business to go bust."

Maybe Bernard needs autocue for his interviews.. ![]()

Nice theory Barney but didn't Monroe die the year before?

Strange thing...
I wonder why the year 1963 is so important in this song... Had JFK or the Monroe birthday in January, like Barney sings? Barney has... So I thought of a personal story before. But in 1963 he must have been 7 or so...

Because it rhymes with "gift for me"!
Not too deep a meaning in this song, I think.

Not really convincing to me... Could have been 1983 as well then...
Well I googled a bit... None of them (except for Barney) had birthday in January...
Nah, it's just a little, made up story. Now't to do with JFK or anyone "real". Think 'Love Vigilantes' - a fictional story from the point of view of someone beyond the grave: could both be country lyrics, really.
Simple as that.
Andy
When I first heard it, I thought it was a story involving Bernard. I thought Manchester was rough but not that rough. :D

Now i've taken the time & actually read the FAQ![]()
Some of them I never knew:( . . . and i'll have forgotten by tomorrow (shit memory i have)
the one about the words inbetween TPK & PFD - sorry but i'd never noticed
but now that I have listened to it you can clearly here him continuing talking behind the drumbeat (at least) until the synth comes in. So are there any people out there who know the rest of the quotation???
