Side Projects Compilation

Just finished and exhaustive (and exhausting !) review of all New Order side projects and have created the following CD-R compilation, what d'ya think ?

I reckon it makes a cracking lost New Order album !

Seriously though, I wouldn't mind a copy of that myself!!

well, i guess i am the only one on this lonely planet who really likes "Revenge"...

they got some very cool tunes like "Deadbeat", "14K" and so on...well, but nevermind....

I think they had some good tunes but the production just buried everything under a blanket.

I was really into Revenge myself although not as enthusiastic now, still some good tunes (big bang, it's quiet, Jesus,..i love you etc).

What about Imitation Of Life by Electronic for the compilation, surely the best thing they've done?

Yeah.. "Big Bang" is a good track. I used to love it when the album came out but i havent been listening to it for a LONG time.

...has anyone ever heard "the trouble with girls" from Revenge ??? It's a re-version of "big bang" with female vocals added...got it from Audiogalaxy...very cheesy... :D

Hehehe I have a copy of that on a Factory compilation tape lying around somewhere. Also on it, I seem to remember are the likes of Northside, Happy Mondays, Cath Carroll, and New Order (some kind of BLT remix), The Wendy's, and Durutti Column.

Anyone know which tape I'm on about?

Was that the one given away with Select magazine? It had a Factory number. FAC305 or something like that.

Yep, that's the one...a cracking little tape that. It's Stephen Hague who does the BLT remix and I like that Revenge number as well. That Northside instrumental is excellent as well, I still play that tape now from time to time.

I also had a 'thing' for Cath Carroll at the time but I sort of grew out of it...

I have that Select tape too - anyone notice that the featured exclusive mix of BLT by Stephen Hague was actually dusted down and rechristened Bizarre Love Traingle '94 on (The Best Of) New Order? Apologies for sounding REALLY anal here, but even in this new form there was some slight tweaking to distinguish it from the otherwise identical version that featured on that free tape: namely Barneys "doo-doo-doo...." vocals over the instrumental bridge as heard just after the first chorus and just before the second verse has been mixed out off the final "94" version. Anybody else notice that...or am I the first one to bring it to attention?

Re: Revenge, I take it nobody else here liked "(I'm Not Your) Slave" then? I think that was a single too, if I can recall. Dig that smutty phonecall dialogue that runs in the background of it too (anyone know where it was sampled from, if at all..?).

Love REVENGE covers....those girls, leather, chains, lesbo acts, etc.... Don't know about Hooky's singing, though... I'll always remember Pineapple Face...listened to it a lot during the bad patch in my life( early 90's )....

I believe Hooky used to be a true regular at the infamous London SM Fetish club SKIN TWO did he not?

I saw Revenge play live millions of times, and in fact they were the first gig I ever went to. I had no idea of the protocol so I turned up 5 hours early, watched the soundcheck, and even had a chat with Hooky and his missus of the time (No, it wasn't Caroline Aherne LOL). They were both charming and funny. A top gig it was too, as I also met Tom Hingley from The Inspiral Carpets (crap band) LOL Suffice to say that I ended up incredibly drunk and all at the age of 15, it's been downhill ever since then; apart from catching 4 NO shows last year, which restored my faith in live music no end. :)

pah, i guess it's the 7" single version you're talking of...a horrible edit of the album-version with stupid raps added by the remixer...horrible

but the U.S version of the single CD is great, has some cool mixes (about 7 different versions i think).

Yeah, ive got that cd, i listened to it a while ago and only enjoyed 2 or 3 of the mixes. that supposed smutty phone call was embarrasing - the album version was much better.

Gun World Porn - State of Shock, and Cloud 9 were both great tracks. It's the only Revenge stuff i regularly listen to now, i think thats when Hooky started to get his shit together properly, if he hadnt gone back to NO i think a second revenge album would've been interesting.

After reading all of these posts, I thought it was time to dust off One True Passion and Gun World Porn to give them another listen. I must admit, ten years later, they still don't click for me. They're just too "slick" and overproduced - much more so than I would ever expect from the great Hooky.

Now monaco, on the other hand, is an entirely different story...

Maybe that now fully explains why Monaco succeeded precisely where Revenge failed..... despite Hooky being at the helm in both projects - they needed a vocalist that sounded exactly like Barney. Pottsy must be slapping himself on the back continually and creaming his pants at all the accolades.....

well...overproduced ??? when i compare "One True Passion" to "Republic" (only three years difference)...which one is overproduced ??? i think "Republic" is...

i'd say "One True Passion"'s production is chaotic, a compulsive attempt not to sound like NewOrder. But when i listen to the original version of "DeadBeat" for instance (NOT the remix), it's rough and heavy...

apart from Electronic, and at a push one track from Monaco,revenge and the other two, I see very little that could fill up a compilation from the side projects. Surely it would just be a best of Electronic?????

To me, One True Passion wasn't "musical" - in the sense that there were far too many samples and effects taking away from the songs. Hell, it was Hooky's band and you couldn't even hear his bass.

Its just personal prefernce, but I preferred the sound of the songs that monaco recorded over those of Revenge. Like Hooky said, they just tried too hard not to be New Order on One True Passion.
