There are a ton: The intro to Blue Monday. "The past is the present, the future is mine" part in Confusion. "Now I feel you've left me standing in a world that's so demanding" part in True Faith. The very last keyboard part(the last 10 seconds or so) in Here to Stay. The ending parts in Dracula's Castle and Dream Attack. The "la la la la la" parts in Paradise. "Volts from above hit the people down below" part in Temptation. The "you're much too young..." part in Fine Time. The long keyboard based part right before the last choruses on Guilt is a useless emotion. The last two lyrics in The Perfect Kiss.

There's more I'm sure, but that's just what I can think of for now.

whenever they do that major-minor chord shift on the synths when they're letting rip. Pure Gillian/Hooky moments. Love it.

but what I really like about the order, is the instrumental break in the middle of most songs. I believe the professional term for that is a bridge. few other bands do it or do it as well as them.

The 'I don't belong to no one' refrain in "Dream Attack". Great buildup both times: the first is cut short, and the second has that synth flourish before the guitar solo. Cool and emotive all at once.

Far too many to mention, but I do enjoy it when Barney adds in a little lyrical 'epilogue' after the last chorus in the best NO songs. It's not quite a verse, it's not really a chorus....but it adds an emotional weight in every case.

Examples include Ceremony ("Forever, watching love grow.."), Vanishing Point ("And he gave it away like in whistle down the wind..") and Regret (Just wait 'till tomorrow, I guess that's what they all say..")

Anyone else notice this? DepthCharge, I don't recall a lot from our drinking session ages ago, but I do recall discussing this at some point. CTB

The intro to Hurt, just as those drums crash in and Barney's nonsense lyrics begin.

the end of bizarre Dub triangle. Because after sitting thru a pretty ploddy, lumpy pettibone mix, out of nowhere, that bass just appears, SO loud, and SO lovely.

The fade out of fine time. But I think the ultimate has to be either the last movement of Here to Stay, I dunno, there's something about hearing Barney sing "we're here to stay" while hooky SLAUGHTERS his bass that just warms my blackened soul. OR, and I think this one has it by a nose........any of those mid 80's gigs where temptaion appears out of EGG.....the moment the Gills' ARP's change from "dugga da da da dugga da da" to "dugga dugga dugga dugga" is almost too much an when the top part comes in, that's me gone, on the floor claws outstretched and tesifying that NO are the greatest band in the entire universe of space and time.

Apart from that, the best thing is that roar followed by "hello we're nooo orda", then a larger cheer for that, then DRRRRRRRRRRNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGG, as Hooky lets everyone know that they really ARE new order :)

I think my fave would be the extended intro on the 12" Temptation - where the guitar slowly builds up & up & up - and then drops to the synth & lyrics - clasic (& almost clasical)

There are oh so many. And surely no other band on the planet can touch NO for music that makes your hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

Angel Dust is one I can think of, at top of my head. After Barneys finished singing, it goes into an assault on the senses. The violins building up, then the fantastic drum roll (and my favourite of Steves), then the guitar and xylophone duplicating the same melody, the "Woooooah hoooooah hoooooohs", then the fenetic guitar solo and thrashing bass. Awesome.

"Patiently you wait for me"...3:38 in Special. Does it for me every time.

Too many to count, but...

One old : Ceremony at around 2'57 (on the Gillian version) after the first 'watching forever' there's a split second of calm then Hooky's bass shifts up into the full melody.

One new : WFTSC. at 3'03, after the second chorus, Hooky goes back to the sublime verse bassline and simultaneously the synths come in - the moment that NO reminded me that they're still truly great.

That's a good expression of why, for me, the Substance version is pre-eminent.

Hi, don't say much but had to respond to this. My favourite piece of music of all time is towards the end of the instrumental version of Thieves Like Us when Barney joins in with some 'ohhh ohhhhhh ohhhh ohhhing', just fantastic.

The intro to Thieves Like Us, perfect. I used to listen to it all the time on my way into Manchester on the train, it just seemed to fit.

Crystal intro, sounds almost delicate until the drums kick in and the band come in one by one.

Temptation, Barney's lyrics with the "up down, turn around...", catchy! One of my favourites to bounce around to.

Not really part of a song, but that little scene in the BLT video where the lady talks about reincarnation. Completely random but it seems to work somehow.

Like everyone else, there are just too many to list, but a particular favourite at the moment is when the synth comes in at 2 mins 45 secs on 60mph. Always gives me the 'shivers'.

Mosty a soaring synth as in Ruined In A Day, when it first came out I dismissed it as too slow but after repeated listens it is sheer class.

The way the whole song builds up for a finale of raging guitars and synth beats, while remaining a fragile beauty is awe inspiring.

From WFTSC it has to be the "J-E-T (J-E-T), your are my Jetstream lover..." bit, for the sole reason that my 3-year old son loves it, knows all the words, and there's nowt better than getting them hooked at an early age.

Can't say it better than that Temptation - 'No, I've never met anyone quite like you before' Barney's laugh in 'Every Little Counts' Thieves Like Us - the whole song from start to finish!

I listened to this over and over again recently, and totally agree this verse is pure genius. Beautiful lyrics..."sleepless eyes are open wide, sky is high, road is long" and Barney finishes it off by pleading what she wants from him.

There's so many nuggets in each song, isnt it great?? BTW, I havent seen NO live since manchester '99....got my tickets for nov 10 brixton - can't wait!!!

some top stuff been mentioned but for me its the start of the fade out on "all day long" with the rising orchestral scale and hookys bassline going side by side. puts a lump in my throat everytime i hear it,one of their most beautifull moments i reckons.

I am not going to pick out any particular song but my favorite part of any NO tune is when the vocals end and the m8s get down to business. For example, Lonsome Tonight, TPK, Run, YSF all have great multiminute endings. This is not a put down to Bernard rather I enjoy the sounds of rapture they make once the vocals end.
