Mr Brightside = Ceremony + born slippy

Sorry if I'm not the first to have said that but when I really got into ceremony (a few months back after listening to tracks 3-12 of substance for the last year) I thought it was definitely the matrix for what to me is the best song of this century so far. Its first few bars have the same desperation and drive as underworld's born slippy, but instead of Petering out it goes into the tune of ceremony with different lyrics and changed just enough to avoid a lawsuit.

Any other NO songs which have been blatantly cloned?

I suppose the title of this thread shall imply that "Mr. Brightside" of The Killers is a mix of Born Slippy and Ceremony. Confusingly you don't mention that in your posting... However... I think "Mr. Brightside" has indeed something New Ordery, but I don't see Born slippy in there... New Order is one of the idols of the Killers so that can be explained... The link between "Born slippy" and "Ceremony" is not very clear in my ears.

When I saw NO at T in't Park this summer Brandan Flowers came on stage and did a duet with Barney..Cant remember what it was I too pissed...but I honestly thought it was Julian Cleary for a minute I was in total shock and horror!!! Mr Brightside is a furking top tune and now in my top ten of all time!

nah!! all these thingio's i've done is stacks better. they've changed the vid now i've noticed. no more cute little indie chicks following the band around.

Even 'All These Things I Have Done' has a certain New Order/Joy Division feel about it. But Mr. Brightside definitely sounds like Ceremony. You can just about hear every 80s band in The Killers - U2, The Smiths, New Order, Flock of Seagulls. Stll like them though.

Thanks for explaining that one Bere. I thought the thread bearer was talking about Ceremony being a rip off of Born Slippy and that Underworld should be sueing New Order!!!

And as for Mr Brightside, I didnt know what the hell the connection it was that had it was there. Cos if it was he was saying that its a rip off from Born Slippy then fair enough but anyway Samantha Taylor was snogging Pete Baxter behind the bike sheds and anyway she said she never but i saw her so Samantha's a bloody liar. (if you dont watch LB then ignore this paragraph).

The verse in indeed very "Born Slippy". I actually don't really hear the "Ceremony" similarity.

Born Slippy= Wonderful Ceremony= Wonderful Anything that involves the Killers= SHITE

Don't compare either of the first two to the KILLERS! Ever, ever, ever.

'Mr Brightside' sounds much more like Phil's old band Marion than New Order to me - check out Marion's first album, particularly 'Time', it's quite similar.

Can't hear the Underworld connection either - different chords and structure. Maybe a slight similarity in the chant-like vocal delivery in the verses, but only vaguely CTB

at least nobody has mentionened a couple of cure songs yet.

Mr. Brightside is such a whiny-ass song. The lyrics just makes me just want to beat the crap out of the singer and yell "grow the feck up!" so loud into his ear that his ear drum becomes permanently perforated. I have the same sentiment for anything by the Postal Service and Death Cab for Droopy, and people who think Garden State is such a great movie.

Underworld rocks though.

Same for new order.

Mr Brightside sounds to me like a rip of "Queen Bitch" by Bowie

lyrically they did seem to borrow something from the Bowie track.

but hell most people put out stuff that is a mishmash of their tastes and influences growing up.

i do like the Jacques Lu Cont remix of Mr Brightside.. at almost 9 min long it gets me through a nice portion of my cardio at the gym.

That's only one reason why I like the Killers. I know I'm gonna get some egg on my face but who here thinks that Brandon Flowers is a bit reminisent of Ian Curtis?
