Vanishing Point is much better than Fine Time. Kind of like Primitive Notion is much better than 60MPH. All Day Long would have followed BLT much better than State of the Nation.

by answering these quetions:
is it commercial enough for a single (song structure)? has it a good chorus/hookline ? is it suitable also for a non-newOrder audience ? ...these would've been my choices:
- Close Range (also because of they played all through the tour)
- Slow Jam (yes indeed! especially for the "ROCK" audience)
- Love Vigilantes
- Vanishing Point (in a good radio edit)
- Let's Go (Nothing for me)

There are these recurring references to the idea that it was somehow a favor to fans to keep singles off albums. Am I missing something? Doesn't that force fans to buy more records? If the single was also on the album, it would not be necessary to buy the single.
If I'm wrong, someone please educate me.

Patsy it's a valid point - that wasn't my problem mate. This is a forum where people are posting "hypothetical" questions, therefore everything shouldn't be taken so fookin seriously - that's what annoyed me when I read the reply to my post, all I was trying to do was to find out, what other people thought, hope that's Crystal mate;)

If this just concerned choices taken off albums for the sake of singles then I'd suggest these:
From GET READY Close Range instead of 60mph And absolutely no others from this album
From REPUBLIC Everyone Everywhere instead of Spooky/Ruined In A Day [FOUR singles was a bit much - should have stopped at three: Regret, EE, World (only cos the latter had commercial potential, and it showed, going top 20 even)]
From TECHNIQUE Vanishing Point/Mr. Disco (could do summat with that crap title tho)/All The Way instead of Round & Round/Fine Time/Run
From BROTHERHOOD other than what already came off it (B.L.T.) just Paradise, I suppose
From LOW-LIFE Sooner Than You Think instead of Sub-Culture
From PCL Age of Consent OR Your Silent Face but not both.
From MOVEMENT only Dreams Never End

Just to be contrary Patrick, I always thought the idea of a single was to promote the album it was lifted from. So you increase album sales which is where the real money is. I've certainly bought albums after the 3rd or 4th single release.
That said, did love it when NO left singles off albums as it made em more individualistic. Looking back though, some albums would be even better (IMHO) if the singles were included...
Brotherhood - release delayed to 1987 to include True Faith, 1963 & Touched.

Nobody likes Doubts Even Here? Who says the singles have to be pumped up, why not mellowed down? So it didn't work with Ruined. DEH is a beautiful song no?
The point about not having singles on the albums was that it made the single something to treasure. It was central to the Factory ethos about not ripping off people and treating the records as works of art not just some merchandise to be shifted.

What I don't understand is how keeping singles off the albums achieved the goal of "not ripping off people." Was the theory that this meant there would be more non-single tracks on the albums? But the albums were pretty short, weren't they? It was no strain to put BM on the U.S. version of PCL.
