Im all ready to go .. Going to tape it on two video recorders because my luck with videos is so shitty ... I thought New Orders selection of videos was very interesting ... Whats with choosing Snoop Doggy Dog ? Oh well, everyones entitled to listen to whatever they like ... Nice to see that they chose an Aussie group 'The Avalanches' as one of their picks ... Pretty Fly for a White Guy was another different choice by them ...
Can't wait for tomorrow night though ...
It's the same playlist as the special last year which is good because I made a mess of taping it last time. Won't be making the same mistake again.
New Order wern't actually hosting the show last year though so this is going to be even better ... we'll get to see them chatting about their fav songs ...

NEW ORDER/ARTHUR BAKER/UNDERGROUND LOVERS
The Metro
Fifteen years is an awfully long time to wait to see a favourite band return to your shores - especially when most don’t even survive that long nowadays. Through hiatuses, infighting and shonky business deals however, New Order have soldiered on, and so we are FINALLY treated to their return.
After a curiously difficult set from Underground Lovers, which saw great initial audience enthusiasm wane at pretty much the same rate as the band disappeared up their own rectums with their "we wanna be Sonic Youth" type meanderings (and just when did Mr Vince actually become Happy Mondays' Shaun Ryder?), one DJ who actually justifies use of the word "legendary" commenced his set.
Secreted away somewhere, possibly so as not to frighten the younger audience members with his big, hairy 'n' scary presence, Arthur Baker spun a collection of tunes from such disparate sources as Acca Dacca, Michael Jackson, Prince/Mr Squiggle and the Beach Boys, melded together with all manner of big beats and even some of his original creations, including the always brilliant Planet Rock and some of his work with the stars of the night themselves…
And after what seemed an eternal wait (well three hours is long enough at this age!), three old blokes and some young guy named Phil (sadly Gillian couldn’t make the current tour due to family commitments) jumped on stage. Alright, so they may be a tad wrinklier and paunchier than when they last graced us with their presence back in 1987, however as recent single Crystal burst into life any doubts as to whether they've still got it were well and truly forgotten.
A curiously pleasing yet often disappointing set ensued. Treats abounded such as arguably the four best songs from their days as Joy Division -Transmission, Atmosphere (not as austere as the original, but certainly just as moving), an almost disco-fied Isolation and, needless to say, the ubiquitous Love Will Tear Us Apart - the first official New Order single, Ceremony, a deftly remixed True Faith and possibly their finest moment in a career full of bona fide classics, Temptation. Pretty much for every utter gem, however, there was a turd thrown in to balance things out. Shazza-pleaser Bizarre Love Triangle was an utter mess, Get Ready track Slow Jam was essentially undiscernible as such bar for the odd lyric you could catch here and there, and the traditional closer Blue Monday fell apart entirely in a manner that admittedly any fan knows to expect (and probably looks forward to in some perverse way) - not helped in the least by Hooky's gloriously over-exuberant bass monster antics, which rendered his axe tuned somewhere around the key of 'H' thanks to a sea of grabbing hands…
"Over exuberance?" Yep - gone are the dour days of backs to the audience and nary a syllable uttered between tracks. Whilst Stephen Morris still hides away up the back, we were well and truly treated to the Barney'n'Pete show, as they joked around, did remarkably silly dances (expect the Bernard Sumner aerobercise video any time on the shopping channel) and posed like the greatest of true rock Gods - which Hooky inarguably is.
The night's greatest disappointment was a lack of ANY representative tracks from the albums Movement, Power Corruption and Lies, Low Life or Technique (that's four out of their first five) - and when the only airing from Brotherhood was the inevitable BLT, well, you're bound to have many disappointed fans - especially when classics the likes of Your Silent Face and Love Vigilantes received airings elsewhere in Australia. And what's with Barney and the auto-cue - perhaps all those Hacienda days had a bit of an effect on the old memory then?
Still, little grumbles aside this was New Order, in our town and well and truly in our faces. When it comes down to it there isn’t much more a fan could ask for. Well, except perhaps that they not wait another fifteen years to return…

Chris I think it best to do what I'm going to do and that's tape them on the couch on one tape and then adding another new tape in the machine just for THEIR SONGS ONLY, as you can see it will fit doing it this way, sadly I will lose sleep for it, but so what sleep in tomorrow it's Sunday.
I am surprised they aren't playing any clips from 'Revenge' as they do exist.
I have to say I have a few clips compliments of Brian W. who was in the band (mark II). I have the original music video they did and a live track. I am so pleased to have been able to see these clips. Not sure why no one likes Revenge I thought they were great. Have any of you heard the music?
When Brian was here last year he managed to find practically a mint copy of their LP.
He couldn’t believe it. I of course was envious as I am sure he had a copy.

I am 110% sure that Hello by Lionel Ritchie was a pisstake, as it is one of the most ridiculous/funny/cheesy clips I have ever seen. I was cacking up and im sure they were doing the same, I remember Barney's 'I fucking hate ballads' quote.
Poison was obviously a piss take, as well as Offspring, maybe some others.
No cure though, who would have thought. Do NO hate Depeche Mode as well, cos I think they would, I just get it from them that they think their much better than other groups they have been lumped in with.
Yeah, I missed the intro to Lionel Ritchie so who knows... Have to check the tape.
The Offspring 'Pretty Fly' clip was Hooky having a laugh, empathising with the misfit protagonist..
Kraftwerk, Velvet Underground, The Chemicals, Sex Pistols, Primal Scream, Pumpkins, Marion, etc, well they all played rather important parts in NewOrder history. Fairly predictable there..
Superb to see Squarepusher, Lionrock and The The slot into the mix also..
Some quality tunes plucked out of the vaults by the lads.

Last nights Rage was great ... I also burst out laughing while watching Hello by Lionel Ritchie .. Not so much at the song but at the video clip ... I mean, that is the cheesiest thing I have ever seen ... HAHAHA ...
Great to hear the guys talk about their fav songs though .. And especially when they were talking about the clip for 'atmosphere' ...
Bernard was back to his usual self ... Not as outrageously animated as he was in the big day out interview ... As Hooky said in that BDO interview, Bernard is rarely in one of those moods so 'enjoy it while it lasts' ....

I didn't think the review was so bad at all. It's been yonks since I've read Beat, but in the days when I did, I'd always turn first to Jarvis James's column... You know this guy, Amy ??

I also know that the review was asked for mere hours before deadline (so was rushed by necessity), and was only supposed to be around 300 words. Even so it ended up around 700 (and was gotten away with!), but all that was intended to be said couldn't be.
