I'M NEW TO NEW ORDER....WHERE SHOULD I START?

if you wanna good sampling of why New Order was the most superior creative force of the eighties, Substance is the place to go. It is the most representative of what the band does best: creating really intelligent, dark, sad, emotional, SinkYourTeethInto dance music. After youre hooked, then get the albums and hear the guitar stuff.

People always talk about Barney being a crap singer and that he shouldn't sing JD tracks, but I can't think of too many NO songs that would haved suited Ian's voice, especially after Movement. I heard 'Ceremony' on Still first, but it was the NO version that really got me. Bernard's detached style was new to my ears.

Anyway, I had a haphazard way of getting into the albums. PCL was the fave for a long time. I bought Substance early on, but unfortunately subculture, state of the nation, and shellshock gave me the impression that Technique would follow in that vein. How I was so wrong! Technique is now the fave, but I'll still throw on Movement pretty frequently.

John Peel Sessions 81-82 and PCL are a fine place to start. The former has better versions of songs that appear on Movement, and that stage of the band is as important as the more synth-dominated work, despite what some may say.

DEFINITELY start with Singles first; your ears will tell you which ones you really like....from there track down which albums the songs came from and do it that way... In my humble opinion some of the albums apart from 1 or 2 tracks are crap - they're still in my garage after moving house 3/4 years ago and I've never replaced them on CD - that's how I judge how good an album is/was! Wait for the abuse to start from the die-hards.........

Originally I would have said Best of New Order, but Singles is now a fair rival. Best Of is the cheapest (short of downloading), least demanding way to get a preview of the cream of the band's frothiest output. Singles and Substance are more complete collections, but Singles is fairly long and Substance is a downright mammoth undertaking to listen to in entirety. Best Of not only gives you a share of the singles, but also some of the better album tracks as well. Also, it's the only place besides the Salvation OST where you'll be able to find any version of Let's Go.

Skip International, the only things worthwhile about it were the nice sleeve design and the inclusion of Here to Stay, which is now on Singles as well.

Cant really tell you where to satrt but one thing i can tell you is...... dont bother trying to collect all the promos,you will pay rediculous prices for them and they will probably sit at the back of a cupboard Ggathering dust and being unplayed for years on end! p.s dont bother looking for no promos on ebay either,there's aleays some greedy bastard waiting to rip you off for the sake of ,what is essentially a FREE CD,but am not a bitter man!

was in hmv today..... picked up technique as it was nice 'n' cheap! so far so good.... it seems like a bit of a grower, round and round stands out instantly, what a song!

No one really knows precisley why, except Ian. He watched a movie, and stuck a rope round his neck. That's probably all anyone can sy with total certainty.

Technique rules BTW, especially if you like the electronic side of their stuff (the rocky stuff on technique's very gentle as you probably noticed).

Although many have suggested beer, no one seems to have sugessted the OTHER most important shoe-in to New Order.

Although secondary - I think to get the full experience, aswell as just listening to their back catalogue find out about the fascinating story of JD / NO and the unique beauty of their record covers etc - DVDs of New Order Story and 24 Hour Pary People would assist.

If you like 'Round And Round' try to get hold of the CD single releases as they are superb, look again in HMV or Virgin Megastores and if they have ANY of the studio albums mentioned in this thread going cheap buy them, you will not be disappointed.

im from manc and what you should do is have grown up around here....go back in time go to the hac on a tuesday and u would just have it in your blood by now.the hacienda was amazing man!i disagree with some people about this topic i personally think that joy division are better than new order they sound quite punky with attitude better than the sex pistols but if your on a more dancey vibe get the album get ready and then work your way back to joy divison...get joy division substance and watch 24hr party people to get a sense of the vibe their feeling and where they are coming from by surroundings all artists are influenced by their surroundings and this city is so gritty and is certainly great for inspiration! i hope all of the above didnt sound too patronising.ive been into jd/no for years now and its really cool that nine inch nails did a cover of dead souls its a joy division track thats on substance its mint and the nin version is cool too thats on the crow movie soundtrack....phew

dude also get the graphic art book of peter saville he has done their art work for years he's been a real inspiration for many artists like moi and i went to see his exhibition back home in manc in the urbis it was great and durutti column played too!but his artwork really does match the music...he's greeeaaat!it helps to give the music another identity for people to recognise them this is so important!

Start at the end.......Waiting for the sirens call (current), then skip back to 86 Brotherhood (classic heyday), then end at the start,Movement (1st still finding their way album), then just fill in the gaps or maybe get singles or substance first, Joy Division can be a bit of a shock at first but they certainly Rock....

Well, what's your decision, Johnny ? Ready to go on with Joy Division ? I hope so.
