I got a mail of somebody asking me who did guitar riffs on Shadowplay, Ian or Bernard.. obviously I said Bernard, but now that I think of it, I never saw Ian with an instrument in all the live footage I've seen.

Did he ever play any music on recordings? out of curiousity... I actually never asked myself this question before... it's obvious Bernard is both guitarist and vocalist when you see New Order live, though we know he does more than that in studio.

the white, diamond shaped Vox guitar with all the builtin gubbins was Ian's. he did bits of guitar live when bernard was screeching on the synth.

remember on NO story..."ian played guitar on that one" is Hooky's responce to barney's story about where gillian appeared from (referring to I remember Nothing).

Uhhh... actually, never seen it completely.

When I digitalized it back in 1997 for the "Videology", I found the quality to be quite poor, and probably watched a few songs, but I don't remember seeing Ian with any instruments.

Maybe I should give it another try...

Ian played guitar on the following songs live:

I Remember Nothing Atmosphere Love Will Tear Us Apart Heart And Soul Incubation The Eternal possibly Decades possibly Passover (we have reports that refer to two guitars in Passover, and noise that sounds very much like a guitar being unplugged on at least one version)

We know that Ian didn't play any of these parts in the studio though, Bernard did them all.

numerous instruments in the studio to modulate his voice

oooooooh, someone who calls outboard "instruments"....step into my office, we need to talk...so tell me, when did you leave the radiophonic workshop ;)

i'm quite sure it was Hannet doing the playing, that is one fucker who's rack I would not interfere with.

EDIT: those possiblies, are probably just tracks where he had the thing left on him, Bernard does it all the time (well he used to), hence the friggin Chic guitar we get occassionally treated to on BM :) Then again, ian had a clue :)

True Faith was a lot better when Barney did his best Nile Rodgers impression on the second half of the song.

This subject is only slightly less interesting than the "Barney playing acoustic" conspiracy. Ian's ghost plays cowbell on TPK.

"only slightly less interesting" (snobbity snobbity snob...)

oh piss off.

It is VASTLY interesting to figure out the WHAT of Ian Curtis, so go find another forum to get bored at, ok?

Nic, DO check out Here Are The Young Men... grab a few glasses of red wine tho for the viewing, turn down the house lights, and crank up the speakers..... it IS worth it....

hell, I watched it on 3rd gen vhs tapes for years. the first time, i also barely made it. very dark and hard to follow. but something brought me back.

and then, one day, you find yourself in a salvation army buying an old trenchcoat and singing DAY IN DAY OUT over and over.... and you go and label that tape so nobody can tape over it..... and you start realizing you know a few to many Fac numbers.... hmmm....

and you wonder, 20 years later, "gee, is that Here Are The Young Men thing on dvd yet?"

and, damnit, send a copy to Nic!

or something like that.

The end is nigh.......I find myself agreeing with Senor Tarbox yet again!

Next thing you know we'll be collaborating for a Community song!

He certainly didn't play any on any New Order songs.

Hooky obviously doesn't agree with that.
