Things that make you go "OOF"!

Okay, what I want to know is, the part of any track (NO related or not) that 'gets you' every time you hear it? I'm talking goosebumps, hairs standing on the back of your neck, tears, etc.

For me, the guitar part that comes in on the 'Touching from a distance, further all the time' line on 'Transmission' is one of the most perfect things I've ever heard.

I also had a 'funny moment' listening to 'Temptation' once...the way Barney delivers the 'People in this world we have no place to go' bit struck me as being really sad, and yes, I got a bit teary eyed....not good when you're on the bus to work :o

the way the line "look at me... i'm not you" from Regret is delivered always makes me catch my breath.

And the opening guitar riff just gives me goosebumps as well!!

the little keyboardy bit half way through 'Crystal'.

Allen, getting a bit tight at the top of the third innit?

There's many moments off course, but the one that comes to mind is the last bit of Sub-culture (the album version) when the loud synthsizer nearly drowns out Barney's voice...one of these days you go back to your home... Takes my breath away every time.

The second verse of Temptation, really does it for me, as well as the "green eyes, blue eyes, gray eyes" part

Also, the opening bits of SLC and Atmos have been known to get my hair standing on end.

The second repetition of green eyes, blue eyes, grey eyes on Substance Temptation.

The drums at the start of Decades at Festival Hall in 84 - history was unfolding in front of us. Seemed better to me than LWTUA at Brum the year before, as that was a bit of a mess !

Yes, the opening bars to Ceremony always gets me. Others are the opening keyboard bits to Thieves, Sunrise and Sooner.

The little twinkly things in Bizarre Love Tiangle. The cover of Temptation by Transmutator. Yep - the searing guitar throughout on "Ceremony" (first version) - especially the end bit! The weird sequencer noise right at the end of "Chosen Time" The icy echoey melodica refrain on "Truth" - chilly as fuck!

Tend to get a bit wound up with the "I've lost you..." bit in AOC, also the "Just wait 'til tomorrow..." coda in Regret - close to the meaning of lfe, IMHO. No point in picking a bit from Temptation, as it is all perfect, ditto Ceremony. CTD

Blue Monday, I know i will get slagged off but it always works for me, other notable ones are Special 'the patiently you wait for me, you are so blind', Dream Attack (in general), Mr Disco, the start of the second chorus 'maybe you could write me a letter' its at that point of the song i feel like im 'in' or that the song has me in, if that makes any sense. First and foremost, exactly 2:17 into Run, when Barney chimes in with a third electric guitar part...that track really takes off into the stratosphere. Absolutely sublime.

Vanishing point - near the end where the music cuts out, then theres the keyboard, and then hi-hats, and then fast snares and then back to big bass drum and a note from Hookys bass. Just before the "Whistle down the wind" bit where you hear a rumbling noise. That bit is class too. Damn the song`s too good!!!

i usually notice different things in different songs at different times... anyway, what always got me was the "ive lost you, Ive lost you..." lyrics followed by the synth sounds at the end of age of consent. the synths were just sudden and disruptive though beautiful at the same time.

also, the things that make you go oomf title reminded me of C n C music factory, were they big in England in the early 90s also?

Having thought about it, what really makes me go "OOF" is when I'm pushing the trolley round the supermarket...and the little fella in the seat thinks it would be a good idea to kick Daddy in the nadgers.

The ending to Bizarre Love Triangle (album version) The orchestral climax to All Day Long The loud guitar stab right at the very end of State Of The Nation (even tho the song is crap) The intro to Thieves Like Us (just gorgeous) The guitar sound on Regret (especially the chord that repeats itself just before each chorus) The part in As It Is When It Was (2 mins 38 secs) when the guitars lunge forward and the song gains momentum The huge ROCK-OUT fuzz-bass intro to Way Of Life The sheer noisiness of Angel Dust's cacophonous nightmarish climax

(notice how many of these bits come from "Brotherhood" ??!)

As for other non-New Order songs, I'm afraid that's far too taxing on my memory bank - I'll run out of batteries before I even get a third of the way thru that one, so sorry to say, I won't be able to do so at present.... :D

2. Vanishing Point - The introduction with the reverbed bass drum and sequencer in the background

3. Age of Consent - the intro with the bass and drums - what energy!

4. 60mph - Barney's guitar solo

Vanishing Point at the 'My life ain't no holiday'part. Love it and I can play the keyboard line during the chorus on my piano.

Dream attack: the keyboards and bass line coming in after the guitar intro make me feel all warm and fuzzy. As does that keyboard line after the first verse and the entire ending.

Ceremony intro, and the lyrics. It's funny because I actually didn't like it at first, and now I listen to it everyday on the way to work.

Lonesome Tonight: Everything. The opening line of "I walk along the street..."

Vicious Streak: The build up and then "I keep hanging on..." I remember the day I bought Get Ready on my lunch hour, couldn't listen to it until I got home, and when I heard that line, it was just amazing. I had to open the doors and turn it up, as if to say "Hey all you MTV/Limp Bizkit/Britney Aguilara/ idiots: here's a real band. This is what real music sounds like."

Another one would have to be 'Leave Me Alone' I think. It just has this enegmaticness all of its own, especially the ending, its strangely comforting in a way.

Vanishing Point, that moment, with the wind effect, yes that is a great moment, perfect.

Also the guitar based tracks on Brotherhood are great, the end of Weirdo, the pure emotion gets me in every time.

And to all people who call them 2 note wonders or whatever, who cares how many chords you use as long as the song works. Its music from the heart, not from some turgid 70s prog-rock outfit, using complex chord changes simply because they can.

As for Get Ready, the songs which hit me the most on an emotional level are Vicious Streak and Primitive Notion.

(new dawn fades) "i'm not afraid anymore i'm not afraid anymore i'm not afraid anymore i'm not afraid anymore..." (insight) "i put my trust in you...i put my trust in you...(screaming) I PUT MY TRUST IN YOU..." (version of means to an end on the still album) the feedback near the end of truth... "the hangman looks round as he waits..." (in a lonely place) when ian's voice enters on the jd box set version of lonely place, fucking shit... barney's voice enters in chosen time.. when the bass and low droning keyboards kick in in the beginning of denial... the ending of 1963 when bernard says (i think)"i will always feel for you," combined with the bass melody, makes me choke up, which is very rare... ian curtis' rare guitar playing in general... when ian's voice enters in dead souls, i can feel him fucking spitting in my face as he yells "someone take these dreams away..." this made me like joy division. when ian's voice comes in on the still version of ceremony... doubts even here, the entire song... the whooping in everything's gone green... "small boy kneels humble in a great hall..." (the him) true faith, the entire song... the drum intro to shes lost control, the entire song after that, and the way that ian dances... "violent, more violent, his hand cracks the chair..." (i remember nothing) "why don't you piss off?" (your silent face)
