Nothing whatsoever to do with NewOrder but seeing as the football frequently gets a look in, I won't hold back.

Today one of the greatest sporting achievements of the modern era occurred with Australia finally breaking its eternal drought for a first Winter Olympics gold medal.

;)

And they pulled it off in true blue Oz style.

In the speedskating final, "Super Steve" Bradbury was completely out of his depth, indeed he was in last place from the very start and actually turned for the last lap a good 10m behind the other 4 skaters.

But in a bloody beautiful twist of fate, at the last corner the other four finalists smacked into each other and stacked into the fence. This left Super Steve able to cruise over the line like an utter champion and claim the gold in ripper style.

The first ever winter gold medal to the southern hemisphere, apparently. Well it was either us or the Tongan bobsledders.

Super Steve, Aussie NewOrder fans salute you!

So he won because everyone else failed to finish ? Some triumph eh ?!!! Fair play to him, that's almost like England winning the Ashes in 1981 because all the decent players had fucked off to Packer !! :)

Imagine if Eddie the Eagle won gold because an untimely avalanche buried the other finalists. It's something like that. A bloody fluke.

I'm sorry, I have to say I couldn't give two fucks about the Winter Olympics, or the Summer Olypics for that matter. It's just dreadfully boring to me, but I will say I find the whole "Skatergate" conspiracy to be interesting. Oh well, not trying to take away from anyone else's enjoyment of the Olympics.

Which is sort of like saying that New Order are only popular because The Beatles broke up. Or that Elizabeth is only the queen because her dad died. Or....

I'm sure I could think of more but the factory calls.

cheers, Bilby

Is it ? England only won the Ashes in 1981 because the Australian team had lost most of its better players to the Kerry Packer World Series. No way would Kim Hughes have ever led Ausralia any other way !! It was effectively a reserve team. England only lost three players to Packer, whereas Australia lost 14 top players.

Saw that speed skate this morning - made me laugh.

I wish Packer would come back and nick all the decent Aussie cricketers again, and while he's at it the best of South Africa, New Zealand etc etc.

Well one gold down, number 2 tomorrow. Il be up at 6am watching the girls in the aerials, we have a really good shot at a silver (or gold is the other chick buggers up) and an outsider for a medal, even without our beloved Jacki.

Just wondering if the Americans in here have heard of cricket ? Im not a huge sports fan, but England and Australia seem to associate with the same sports .. Like Rugby Union, Rugby League, cricket ... Whereas those sports aren't really played in America ... ANyway this is so off topic its not funny ... Why play sports when you can listen to New Order ?

I've heard of cricket...but I'll be damned if I could explain it to you at all...and soccer...why do you suppose it had to be renamed here???

Watching this olympic stuff, could somebody explain to me just what the fooking point of curling is??? I mean, the rest of this stuff has looked like it could be fun...but who the hell thought up this??? Sweeping ice, yeah, sounds like my idea of a groovy time....

oh well....

Hey don't knock curling, it's the one thing we might actually win a medal in. Apart from that lass on the tea tray, of course.

It's always better than those chokers canadians.

Seriously, it's almost embarassing.. at each winter games it's the same.. all our "sure things" choke under the pressure...

Our world champion, Jemery Whoterspoon, felt down in the 500m speed skating, it seems that never happened in speed skating before.

Our world champion in snowboard, Jessey Jay Anderson, didn't qualify for the finals..

Our world champion in acrobatic ski jumps didn't quality.. they didn't also in muggles..

Our champions in short track speed skating were disqualified..

And now, at our national sport, Hockey, the team incredibly sucks.. that's almost a shame...!!

What the hell is wrong with us these days :)

(And I won't go into figure skating)

Oh, Mr. Sputin, what are we going to do with you? Though I've always thought of it as shuffleboard on ice, curling is a proud Scottish (and now Canadian) tradition. It really hasn't caught on here (U.S.) but I lived in Bowling Green, OH for ten years and the U there (BGSU) is one of the few and proud educational institutions in the U.S. to have a curling ice. My mom has been an avid curler for almost as long as she has been in BG. I even took a P.E. class for it.
While I can understand your critical view of this "sport" I think you have to attend a bonspiel to understand the glory. You get up early in the morning, drink, curl, take a break and eat lunch and drink some more, and curl some more. All of this to be followed by more drinking 'til the wee hours of the morning! Can that be all that bad?

Shug, Muffy, and other Scots, do any of you curl? I'm thinking probably not but I'm curious.

Nah mate - but I do enjoy watching it:nod: Any sport that involves an everyday cleaning brush - gets my vote:lol: The only type of curling I do, is after an extreme night of lager swilling and a dodgy curry;)

Shugster...I thought that was called HHHHHurling????

But yes, any sport that involves rituals of drinking can't be all bad. That must be why I enjoy darts and pool....

Curling is like lawn bowls on ice isn't it? I seems like a sport that would attract all the oldies who are unable to break someones head with a hockey stick.

Yes to both! Though you could get a nasty brushburn from someone hitting you with a broom.
