Over on the Fall site The Fall Official Website they have recently completed "The Fall Cup", in which all the band's 16,000 tracks ;) were drawn out at random in something along the lines of the FA Cup, and fans had to vote for one song or the other. After a given period, the one with the most votes progressed to the next round. Wings was the final winner after a lengthy competition.

But Temptation would win here, I hear you say! Not necessarily, it all depends on the draw, and shocks can happen. What would happen if Temptation drew Regret, True Faith or Perfect Kiss in the first round, or something like that?

If people like the sound of this, I will put all the NO song titles into a hat and produce a first round draw (independent adjudicator will be present). Alternatively, we could start smaller with a JD cup and then progress it from there, maybe even doing one with all JD, NO and side projects.

It's just a bit of fun, won't hurt anyone, and all you have to do is vote for which of the two songs you prefer in any "match", maybe giving your reason in the thread. Any takers?

Go on then. How would you decide which ones to use? All album/single tracks?

The hat thing might take you a long time though, I can do it via a software since all songs are in the database, if that's what you want...!

sounds cool

I'm just confused how I've never heard the Fall track 'Wings'? Is it a newbie??

Fcuk me, it's a right old song. Don't know why it doesn't ring any bells at all! Way too many Fall songs to remember!

It was a metaphorical hat!!!! I've got them all on database as well, will do a draw in a few minutes for the first round. The idea being that a few "matches" are held every week, maybe 4 or so, depending on how many there are. If there's an odd number of songs, then some lucky songs will get a bye to the next round etc.

Shall we do a JD one first? Smaller and a bit more manageable as a learning curve.

You want small, do a Revenge one first!

Sounds a jolly wheeze!

Will it be all tracks, like the League Cup or will remixes be allowed to enter à la the FA Cup?

that would be fun. btw is there a record somewhere without me having to dig out all those old threads of the album survivor winning songs?

I wouldn't mind checking out the Survivor results too. But yeah, good idea.

You could chuck in a few of the side project songs to give a non-league underdog vs premiership giant feel...

Are we having extra time and penalties?

Maybe each band (JD NO electronic 'other two' revenge/monaco) should dispute a championship like the continents do, trying to get a place in the world cup. So we get the 5 best tracks and send them to the Complete New Order Cup for a final winner!

Sounds like a good idea, but beware! remember last years fa cup final? Arsenal won after they got slaughtered for 120 mins. Which, theoretically means a song like jestream could win! :)

I believe this is precisely how the Wire "best of" 1985-1990: The A-List was compiled.

Right, seeing as everyone seems to be in favour, let's start with a small taster for the New Order Cup, namely the Joy Division Cup!

I've just put all the song names into the Tournament Manager software I have, and it has produced an interesting draw. Given that there are 45 JD songs (Sister Ray is excluded, and Ceremony and IALP will both be treated as NO songs for the purposes of this ;)), there will be 32 first round matches, though 19 of those see the song through to the second round as a bye. Thus, there will be 13 "matches" to vote on to start with. Shall we say 2 days for each one, and I'll put them up in batches of 4 at a time (5 on the first day to even it out).

Draw will be posted on a separate thread, that I shall take the liberty of sticking. Watch this space!

Jeezus, this is really gonna fill up the forums, ain't it? But then, how else do you do it with the polls method? How was the Fall one done? Surely not with each match as a different thread??

The Fall forum had a whole sub forum dedicated to their tournament I think

somehow i think that's highly unlikely! :D

This has to be the way to go, same for the JD cup.
