New Order / Placebo are they alike??

I hope this hasn't been covered before.

We have got a new temp in our office who is a New Order lover (which means we spend more time talking than working).

He reckons Placebo sound like New Order - what's the general opinion on this, if any??

I've never heard of Placebo so I can't really comment on this, but some friends at my school lump New Order as an "80s" band... But, they are caught up in their MTV garbage music, so they wouldn't be able to understand New Order's music anyways.

Can't hear it myself. Or see it. Placebo always struck me as wanting to be the Manics.

I'd expect better from a seasoned Viking like you, Ness. The comparison is bollocks.

Apparently it was the 'Without you i'm nothing' album, never heard it myself.

The comparison seems to be related to the bass line.

there's nothing in common beetween the bands Placebo is oubviously infuenced by the new wave bands but the similarity stops here.

The "without you i'm nothing" album is very good. the only one of theirs i've got

some great songs like Pure Morning & You Don't Care about us

but they don't sound anything like New Order to me.

just a three piece guitar band.

At least he loves New Order! Maybe he just hears it differently

I've only heard one track, very un-neworderlike! Still i've drawn comparisons with bands before that made people go "WTF???"

I'm listening to to the new Placebo album Meds now, and it sounds nothing like NO.

Nor does anything else they've done. Good band though.

I have several Placebo albums and it has never once occured to me that they might possibly sound like New Order.

If they sounded remotely like any New Order song in any of their tracks I would have been screaming PIRACY/RIPOFF MERCHANTS/etc at the stereo.

They are (a quite good) guitars based rock band.

Placebo and New Order are totally different! I have some of Placebo's albums...They are cool

I have every Placebo CD, and most of NO's. I think the only thing they have in common is that they're English.

This is possibly the most hilarious thread title I've seen for a while yet.

Placebo bear as much resemblance to New Order as fooking Abba do to Throbbing Gristle. Besides, I fookin hate Placebo - they are pants.
