Only saw this for the first time the other day and was delighted to see that it featured a young Jane Horrocks of Little Voice and Tesco adverts fame.
Is there any background as to why she would have been used, where the video was shot(Pennine Moors and Salford Quays?) and what the fuck the video is all about?

Fcuk knows mate, having suffered that video once, I can safely say I won't ever put masel through it again. Worst neworder vid by a country mile, I'd rather suffer watching and listening to Prime 586 turned up to white heat volume for 3 days on the trot with nothing but a tot of water in 80 degree heat in a country like Venezuela while midgies are nibbling at ma bollocks and locals point and laugh.

I can see the lack of appeal if you're not into skinny blonde chicks then.
I quite like the video. Nicely absurd, with a sense of melancholy in it.
If you think of the case as symbolic of our personal troubles, which we allow ourselves to carry about untill it grows to such an extent we are overwhelmed by it and retreat into it.

And another question (to which I will also not get any sensible or informative reply so why I am I really bothering?) is why would the video have been done almost 10 years after 1963 was first recorded? For what purpose?
I do rather like the video myself actually. Provokes a bit of thought.

if you look in the discography, you'll see that there was a 1995 remix single reissue. it is the vid for that.
i believe that was the first time it was actually released as a single proper. as the band so famously joked, "what song was on the other side of true faith".
i like the vid. my take on it is searching for new order in a new order less world. one of these days i will take a dive into salford keys in an attempt to retrieve that compass.
who says that i don't at least sometimes give sensible answers.

A true gent Mr.Kirsch. I salute you. My take on the video? Getting out of the suitcase is the birth when you are unburdened with troubles. Soon you're carrying a small suitcase which is synonymous with your troubles but the suitcase gets larger thus increasing your troubles. The scenery moves from the natural unspoilt landscape of the moors to the industrial wastescape and then to the current post modernism of Salford!? which is reflective of human progress. And all the time the poor lass doesnt have a clue which way to go but is constantly pushed in different directions by the everchanging compass of authority. Ultimately though, use of a strategically placed suitcase will scare sheep and this should never be forgotten.
As much as I loved the song (although I liked the version on "Substance" better), I loathe this video.

no worries. just look at the compass. it is a new order compass designed to find new order. it goes crazy when the searcher comes across the new order posters. my take on the suitcase getting bigger. well the longer the search goes on the harder and more futile it becomes.
