Listen to the Coors?

Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but I just recently I dug out my Crystal single and listened to Behind Closed Doors. Great song, in my opinion, but I noticed that while looking up lyrics for it, everyone thinks that Barney's saying "I check upon the scores, I listen to the Coors".

Maybe it's just me, but I'm clearly hearing him say "I listen to the cause", as in the cause of whatever it is he's talking about. I mean, why would he name drop some random band that has nothing to do with the song? I know his lyrical skills seem to have fallen into the predictability of a Dr. Seuss book, but come on! "I listen to the Coors" just doesn't make any sense, especially given the dark context and mood of the song. True, Coors directly rymhes with scores, but any songwriter can tell you that cause and scores can be worded to rymhe as well, which in this case I'm 99% certain it's what he's saying.

With that said, I'm gonna go listen to some Coors.

Also, yeah, this is my first post, but I've been here for awhile now. You might remember me from the time I had those "Ceremony" and "Temptation" 7 inchers on a page to download a few years back. This is like my third profile now, as I'm always having email changes and keep forgetting my passwords. My last profile was The Dick and before that, Low-Life.

Yeah, the Corrs. I think the lyric section has it as "Coors" though. Behind Closed Doors, top song that one.

Ah, you're right. The group name is certain The Corrs. But as you pointed out, the person who did the lyrics section mispelled it as well.

To be honest, I mispelled it as I have no clue whom that group really is, therefore "listen to the cause" makes even more sense to me. And I would think that if the person who did the lyric section mispelled the group name as Coors, perhaps they have no clue either, thus reinforcing the fact that it should be "listen to the cause", haha.

Ah, the power of suggestion.

And somewhere in a distance, Barney is putting his ear next to one of these...

No it's just not you. I also hear "cause" and not "corrs" when listening to it.

The Corrs are an (quite successful) Irish group consisting of 3 sisters and 1 brother. The 3 girls are rather attractive. There is an game for males where you have to decide whether you would be up for canoodling with a randomly chosen one of the 4 (giving a 25% chance of having to touch lips with the bloke).

They're okay. I think their song "When the Stars Go Blue" with Bono is played a lot here.

Glad you posted this.

I'd always heard "Corrs" before and that small fact has practically ruined this tune for me up until now. The mere mention of such a band in a NO tune. Let's face it, despite being so easy on the eye, they're the sort of band your aunt would play at her wedding reception. Perhaps I'm missing the irony.

Problem is that "I listen to the Corrs" does actually make some sort of sense in the context of the song. If he's singing about the secret things people do "behind closed doors", listening to the Corrs or checking up on the sporting scores could be two such things which you may not want to own up to otherwise.

Moreover if you follow the protagonist through the lyric, it seems that he's yearning for a sort of idyllic place where he can escape the alienating city life. The sort of place where you could enjoy the escapism of The Corrs. Well, maybe if they haven't taken your drugs away.

I think they're saying that people listen to the corrs behind closed doors, because it's embarassing.

let's not read too much into this song.. it's Bernard singing about what people do behind closed doors.. that people don't know about. It's about having secrets. Bernard listening to the Corrs is probably something you didn't know about until now.. no biggie. I actually like the honesty in his lyrics. It's certainly lead to some fine outstanding moments in lyric-dom.. and obviously some bad ones too.. but that's New Order for you.

Personally, I'd prefer The Corrs. Definitely easier on the eye!

Agreed. I can see how it wouldn't mean the same thing to someone outside the UK but The Corrs were a huge act here for a while, on the wane a bit now. Definitely still very well known when the track was written. Bernard must've been aware that even he meant 'cause' people would assume it was 'Corrs'.

I always thought it was a cute joke and I'm glad someone posted about this song. I was going to start a thread about it after listening to it the other day in my car.

It really struck me that Behind Closed Doors gives a hint as to what Joy Division might sound like if they were around today proper. Give it a close listen - what do you reckon?

That's what I reckon too.. albeit with better lyrics. lol.

The music though is amazing. totally stands out as not 'New Order-ish'.. I just wished they'd release a whole album that pushes beyond their by now formulaic sound, but hey.. they've got to get paid like the rest of us, eh? I'd take Behind Closed Doors over Krafty, Jetstream anyday but that's my own taste.
