Does anybody know if the vocoder parts on BLT are actually a member of the band (I was thinking Gillian) or if they are actually a sample ?

as far as I know it's barney's vocal, lifted "as is" and passed through a vocoder playing a new melody. Nice vocaoder too, sounds like possible a Korg one, tho I will not wear to it.

Where the heck would they get a sample of someone singing their song that they hadn't recorded yet ? :D

But it's probably triggered in from a sampler, if not on the record then certainly on live versions (if it's there, I've just drawn a mental blank).

Don't think the vocoder parts ever featured in a live version, actually.

If its the vocoder I'm thinking of it can't be a direct lift from Barney's lead vocals because of the way he sings coming down the scale on "get down on my knees and pray."

However, I would hazard a guess (and it is a guess for all you smart arses out there) that there has not been live vocoder either.

So, I guess he recorded it seperately.

When BLT was recorded there were not bocoder plugins and nowt to plug em into :)

As for pitch....the pitch of the output of a vocoder is generally derrived from the carrier (keyboard) rather than the modulator (voice)....in other words it doesn't matter what melody the vocal has.

I had the pleasure of meeting a live Korg vocoder for a short time in around 1991/2....I never tried BLT on it, and it was too musical to pull a really good "1234"...but it literally sent shivers up me spine.

Stuggled for ages with all manner of vocoder plugins, trying to get just ONE of them to work right...no dice :(

Steve Campbell is spot on. Although I don't think NO bother with the vocoder part when they do BLT live, I have seen Re:Order (a London based NO tribute band for those of you who don't know) do it live. The vocal is sung into two mics simultaneously. One mic goes direct to the PA to give the "proper" vocal tune; the other goes via the vocoder which (somehow) takes the words being sung, strips out the melody of the tune being sung and adds in whatever melody or chords are programmed into the vocoder. I'm pretty sure this is right. If not I'm sure Will or one of the Re:Order guys will set us straight.

if you MUST know how they work :D

I'd like to know which part seeds it, I think it's one of the string parts, but it may be something else.

EDIT: actually the scope of that article is huge, it covers their serious uses too (not sure if it mentions it there, but digital mobile phones use vocoding to compress vocal data to a sendable amount, then recreate the voice by voDEcoding against white or pink noise in the receiving handset)

EDIT EDIT: if you can't be arsed with the article....it's a comb filter or rather a pair of them.
