Turn My Way.....a new classic?

Just been listening to Get Ready a lot this week, I must say overall my fave track has to be TMW (nevermind the presence of All That Is Unholy And Just Plain Crap, i.e. Mr Corgan), which leads me to wonder: Could TMW be the standout track from GR that, years from now, we will discuss with the same amount of reverance reserved for a Bizarre Love Triangle or a Perfect Kiss? Thoughts, opinions on this? Also, if you don't agree with me on Turn My Way, what track(s) off Getting Ready are possible classics in your eyes?

My personal fave is Primitive Notion, closely followed by Vicious Streak. But.......I have an admission to make. Just played Get Ready real loud, and three songs took off that had previously been ignored or yawned through. They were....Shock the Rack, Close Range and Slow Jam ! Wouldn't go as far as to say that I am anywhere near getting ready to join the SJ fanclub just yet, but Close Range sounded great loud !

Primitive Notion and Vicious Streak are the best two on the album. Turn My Way is just a rock ballad done by new order and the guy from Smashing Pumpkins while PN and VS are classic New Order. TM W should never be considered in the same category as Perfect Kiss or BLT or other choice cuts pre-republic. TMW could be anyone, it just happens to be New Order. It's not bad, but not a classic.

I've always been a big big fan of Close Range ever since i first heard it, the BBC sessions version of it is also excellent!

I think TMW will have a hard job becoming a classic in the true sense of the word, as i find it hard to believe that any NO track with guest vocals can be elevated to such cult status...

Damn, Turn My Way is the ONLY track on GR I never listen to. And I actually always like the Pumpkins. I know the NO's catalogue is full of ridiculous lyrics (not that I mind), but TMW has got to be the most childish. "I don't wanna work, like other people do." Also not wanting to go to school and not owning a key is more something a punk band consisting of 17 year olds would sing about, right?

Well, Close Range and Vicious Streak are the real treasures, I suppose, and Primitive Notion of course. Let's not forget Crystal either, talking about classics-to-be!

Jeff, I'm so glad that someone had the time and energy and cared enough to rant a little bit. I used to think that NO's "fookoff" style of dealing with the music industry was nice compared to the "sell your soul and your first born male child to Pepsi" approach but now just feel frustrated. I was listening to the getmusic interview with Barney and Stephen. The question was asked why GetReady was so delayed in the U.S. and Stephen said (granted uncommitedly so) that there might be bonus tracks on the U.S. release to make up for the time delay. Didn't even get a bonus burp or Barney blowing his nose. Maybe it's not NO's fault but this sucks. We didn't get 60 mph and we probably won't get HTS either. Grab everything you can while you're over there!

The fact is that New Order just doesn't appeal to the typical American Moron. The typical American Moron thinks that talented musicians like System of a Down and Shaggy are the only things that are out there. I was like that until I was 18, almost 19. My manager at my job back then had 1963 playing on the CD player. It brought back (repressed) childhood memories and I asked who this was. He said New Order, and so I went out and bought the Best of and then Substance, and everything else within the next two years. I think the reason that the typical American Moron doesn't get into different kinds of music is either because (A) They really are complete idiots, or (B) They are so obsessed with what there friends' friends' friends, MTV, Coca Cola, Britney Spears says is hip that they don't go out and find there own style. I work one or two days a week at a clothing store at a mall. I see plenty of mainstream superultracool MTV people. Trust me, they aren't the ones buying New Order. The shy girl at the bookstore is, or the everyday guy, like me, is. New Order isn't mainstream and I'm glad it isn't.

Primitive Notion and Crystal are the two standouts for me. Contain everything that NO stand for, good Bass, guitars, bit of electronics, danceable rock.

What really lets TMW down for me is the chorus .....I don't wanna own a key, don't wanna wash my car...it's not really Barney is it?

I think that the problem here is with the concept of "classic". A classic is not only a good song (if it were so "Crystal" "Primitive Notion" and some others are so good it hurts) but a song that is treasured by a number of people and considered by them as.. well...er.. a classic. With new songs that consensus is missing as it proves glaringly the fact that we are discussing it here. Nobody seriously discusses that "Perfect Kiss" or "BLT" are classics. In that sense New Order are not capable of producing new classics after "Regret" anymore than Picasso was after "Gurnica" even when he kept producing amazing masterpieces till he died.

Doesnt that surely just leave BlueMonday as their only 'classic' then if popularity defines the meaning?

True that the INTRO for Someone Like You is quite amazing... just too bad the chorus ruins the song...

They use that intro in hockey games over here, which is a miracle.. and shows you how good it is :D

"Primitive Notion" is probably the thing that blew me away most on this disc the first time through...though really, most of it is pretty good. it's very strong as a whole. i really had been worried that it would suck, but was pleasantly surprised that it didn't...

...although sometimes i have to be in the right mood to not skip over "Rock the Shack." the best part of which are the bits leading up to the choruses (chorii? XD) "60 Miles an Hour" was also an early favourite...and i still really like that song a lot. makes me wanna stomp. :D

as for TMW...it's good, and both Barney's and Señor O'Corrigan's voices work very well together. i wouldn't have thought so, but they really do. favourite part of this is the second verse.

*shrugs* i miss the energy of some of the earlier stuff (such as all of Low Life), of course...but this album is still quite good. just not *the same*. :)

also, i'm quite used to most people looking at me strangely if we get into any discussions about music. it's been the same way since i was in high school, cos i really wasn't one to listen to what everyone else was listening to, probably from about age 13 onward. lots of stuff i listened to was resolutely indie, and most of what i listened to (indie or not) really didn't get played on the radio.

...this is why i have a CD burner, and trade mixes with people. and why before that, i traded mix tapes with people. i like to spread the joy that only good music can give...and to find new things that way, too. :D

(MUCH better idea than the radio. ick. )
