You're not alone. My first beloved bands were Abba, Queen and the Go Go's (I've got some old ampex style cassette in a box of 6 year old me hurling obsscenities at my brother when he made clearing his throat noises while I was trying to tape record the Go Go's performing/lip synching on "Solid Gold") and I was 5 in 1980 as well (turned six a week after that fat swine killed John Lennon).
I didn't really discover New Order until Blue Monday 1988 in '88 and didn't follow the band until '90. I missed pretty much the entirety of their prime.
