26 years.... Closer will definately get a listen today. Rest in peace.

Rest in peace. Watched 24 Hour Party People yesterday. Definitely giving Unknown Pleasures and Closer a spin even if the weather here is great. Just seems odd to play JD on such a sunny day.

Listened to UP on the way to work... Closer seemed a bit weighty for such a sunny day... The rush I get from the opening of Disorder never diminishes... Substance for the way home and just maybe Closer if I feel up to it this evening... That one is getting more difficult to listen to in full... Whatever the truth abut Ian, he was a stunning writer and performer... Thoughts as always on this day to his family and friends... How I wish you were here with us now...

is the LWTUA stone freely viewable at Macc crematorian?

I used to drive past fairly regularly but never ventured in as I was unsure how I'd be met.

If its easy to have a nosey it might just say hello next time I pass.

Thanks for leaving so many funny memories for everyone to write stories about so all the mallgoths who buy an LWTUA shirt get the shock of their lives when I tell them you weren't such a miserable nut after all. :evil4:

With the weather as it is, I think the Peel Sessions and Les Bains Douches will get priority play today. "And we can DANCE"...

I read something today that made me think of Ian. Not in an obvious connection way but in a "pah - some will beg to differ" kind of way.

(Can't remember where I got it from as I cut 'n' pasted into Notepad hours ago). Apologies for the repeated off topic football references but it is the complete text.

"Today is the happiest day of the year (unless you are an Arsenal fan). May 18 is the day people feel most cheery and happy with their lot, according to scientists. Researchers looked at where the day sits in the year and how it reflects on our mood. A combination of spring, the days being longer and sunnier and a Bank Holiday approaching generally make people feel happier. And there's the added bonus this year for men with the World Cup just around the corner. But the day may not feel so great if you reside in north London. Arsenal's 2-1 defeat in the Champions League final against Barcelona will have wiped the smile off its fans faces. Earlier this year January 3 was dubbed the most miserable day. Scientists said the end of the Christmas holidays, short, dark days and festive-related debt were a recipe of misery."

Make of that what you will.

Ian's legacy seems stronger than ever before. Bizarrely I saw some Heroes poll on Soccer AM last week which I think was lifted from NME readers votes. #1 was obviously Cobain, but #10 was Ian which I find phenomenal given the passing of time and all the more usual rock icons not even on the list. I guess some things just take decades.

RIP Mr I.C.

I was at Macclesfield and Manchester last year. Went to the grave, met his mum, sister, aunt and cousin. T'was bizarre. Then Manchester for the Radio 1 screening of Transmission.

26 years on, his voice and words remain as powerful as ever. I hope the upcoming film does his memory justice.

Why should a 'man' who took the easy way out of life, abandoning a baby daughter, and screwing over his friends and family, be celebrated in death?

"Rest in Peace" etc is so easily typed.

You can love the music, but also understand the tragedy is not something to be 'appreciated'.....

(and, yes, as anyone with depression knows, suicide IS the easy way out... so spare me the 'he couldn't help it, you don't understand his pain' comments.... he turned his back on everyone, except himself.... )

You should all be celebrating his BIRTHDAY if you truly feel as you do.

One of the questions that my voice instructor will send me asks, "Who are your role models in giving your voice?". I'll definitely put you on the list. RIP.

P.S. I couldn't help but wonder, what would happen if you would have gone on the U.S. Tour. I'm pretty sure there would be more people who would appreciate Joy Division.

"Looked beyond the day in hand/there's nothing there at all"

Was reading his lyrics and unpublished writings in Touching From A Distance recently. So much of it rings true and written in such a brilliant way that anyone can read into it what relates to them for different reasons.

Frankly, I haven't seen a single post that says that his suicide is something to be appreciated, or that his abandonment of his family (which predated his suicide, by the way) was something to be revered. The real tragedy of his death had nothing to do with music--rather, it was that a beautiful baby girl would grow up without a father.

I agree, by the way, that suicide is inherently a selfish act--but it is also something that is not easily understood or explained, especially by those on the outside looking in. I don't to this day know why one of my best friends killed himself at 22, but I don't blame him for it -- let alone condemn him for abandoning his family and friends.

In any case, you misinterpret this thread if you see it as a "celebration" of Ian's death. Ian's memory is revered not because he died (let alone the manner in which he died), but because of what he accomplished (as a performer and lyricist, certainly not as a family man) while he lived. Its not as if we are having ICB death day parties around the world today, but what's wrong with toasting his memory on the day he died? I expect the same will happen on his birthday.

 Well said, Matt... As I said when I posted this morning, my thoughts, as always, go to his family and friends for whom this day must still be a difficult time... The tradegy lies in the fact that anyone should feel driven to end their life at such a young age, when they have, what would seem to an outsider, to have so much going for them... The most stated sentiment on this thread has been Rest In Peace... No glorification, just reflection and a touch of sadness at the events of 26 years ago...
