Sorry if that's disturbing in a remembrance. I don't much get into the Ian cult, but the previous post was just plain disrespectful today.

I have to agree, it was.

Anyhow, while it is sad that the leader of a seminal band felt the need to take his own life at a young age. I am grateful that the rest of the band was able to move on and produce some of my favorite music...

I've started so I'll finish... It is hard to imagine been so depressed that one would take ones life, particularly with a young daughter in the world, its not a celebration of death, just a shame what we missed

I will be 40 this October and Joy Divison and New Order represent the soundtrack of my life, for that I will be eternally grateful to the members of both bands. I was very young when I first listened to Joy Divison with a school friend in Sheffield. I was 13 when Ian Curtis took his life and I am pretty sure that John Peel was the one who broke the news. May 18 is not a day that I mark on the Calendar each year and dress in black for, it is a day that I always think of how much I have to live for and be thankfulo that I have never suffered from depression, althogh as a Sheffield Wednesday fan its been close.

Not many 13 year olds liked Joy Division at the time and they will always be my band, and I see no difference between Joy Division or New Order, just carrying on where they left off.

Just read this post as I've been away most of today, funeral of 89-year old aunt plus family gathering after.

She desperately wanted help to end her suffering but it just wasn't possible. So, in my state of mind, to find this sanctimonious insult to people who loved Ian Curtis, including those he "turned his back on".....

Celebrate his birthday, of course. But remembering his death, regretting his death, is not a "celebration". As for the insensitive generalisation about depression.....

I'm not feeling any sort of personal hurt here I hasten to add. But the point has to be made that there are people who remember IC for reasons other than those suggested.

why he committed suicide is something none of us on here will know. we didn't know him and we shouldn't assume to know what he was thinking or feeling at the time of his death, no matter how much we love the music he made.

so... thanks to ian for giving us joy division, and having such wonderful bandmates who didn't give up making music and as a result gave us the greatest band in the world; and i'm sure debbie thanks him for giving her a beautiful daughter.

well, again, why do we say this on the anniversary of his DEATH? yeah, I know we do it every year. but is it really appropriate? I think it has more to do with easy fandom than true respect for the man.

let his family and friends respect him on this sad day. what do you really know about it?

(One shouldn't need to add disclaimers to a thread because someone might come along and think that each post is some dour and petulant mourning fest put on as so many shirts are in a year. I think no one here is living in some rose colored world where they think Ian deserved a Man of the Year award for his suicide. Some do think, however, that his MUSIC and his WRITING was inspired and worthy of some praise. I think this is what this thread is/was accomplishing.)

we remember this date, because we think of what could have been.

Gotta tell you something now - I picked May 17th for my wedding day because I knew I would never forget my anniversary, and because I wanted the day to have happy connotations after such a long time as being a day of silent remembrance. That says something about how much of an impact Ian Curtis has made on my life. Sure he died in the early hours of May 18th, but May 17th was his last day on this planet.

You'll be glad to know that Digital will be celebrating what would have been Ian's 50th birthday with a special show at the Cartoon, in Croydon, in July.

I remember the post you did last year about seeing his family at his grave (although it's actually a memorial stone, so i don't think his remains or ashes are there, not sure on that one). My overall impression was that you were very touched by the experience and, i think you felt a little awkward meeting Ian's family, but who wouldn't, i mean, what do you say? I can only guess that it left you with the impression that apart from being in a band he was a normal guy with a normal family who loved him and who still pay their respects to the son, brother, nephew and cousin they lost.
