Not being funny, but I only cast 10 votes and NONE of them came home. Is this a first?! I have fcuk all luck laying horses, perhaps I should've put some money on this instead!

Have to say, don't actually recognise many of the names at first glance and seems a lot of the people who do generally take part in a 'community' like the Digital and Re-Order lads have all fallen by the wayside. Shame to see they didn't get more support off people they genuinely know. C'est la vie.

Well in fairness, the stuff that did win was fabulous. I think 3 i didn't vote for made it, and there's one I really don't care for, but all the others are great. So fair play.

Actually yesterday, I had to pull a coupla votes from ppl I knew round here to make room for better tunes. Tho BA/Will still got a vote outta me.

Fabulous or not, surely there's enough people here who know enough other people here to help elevate them into a top 10 spot.

I've said my piece about this venture before. It's not much of a 'Community' offering when it involves people we don't actually know.

Shame really, don't know what more to say.

I see your point Al, and agree to an extent, but at the end of the day , it IS a competition about music, and for the most part the best music won it. I think it was more to do with the entry than the competition if you get my meaning....right at the start I said I had fears about loads of outsiders with massive resources slamming into it. And while it didn't happen like that what did happen is that a lot of not-so-regulars kicked our arses, and it's no bad thing, again, from a musical point of view. I dunno if you've be able/inclined to listen to the top 10, but if not, do so, there's some seriously good music.

Stunned you didn't vote for O'Ou tho mate :thumb:

I voted for the music - tried not to look into who was doing each song to be honest... Of my 20 votes, 5 made it... And there's only 1 track in the final 10 which I don't really like and that's more to do with the song, rather than the version... I suppose like all these attempts to come up with a definitive NO best of, it's a very subjective thing - overall the tracks that made it whilst not necessarily being my favourites are a decent representation of what's out there and a good advert for NO and for NOOL, even if not all of the winners are regular contributors... Maybe someone could organise a 'regular posters' playlist?

thank you for the sentiment. I understand what you're saying about the 'community' tag but I don't feel that we fell by the wayside in the end - we got a top twenty position (could have been top 15 with 2 more votes but that doesn't really matter). we think that's quite respectable. a lot of the artists who've contributed are serious musicians with a far greater knowledge of the art, more time and better resources. I didn't join nick until about a week before the deadline so the learning curve was quite steep but in it's own way, something of a reward. as a first time stab at work of this level we should both be quite pleased with our results and of course the support of the members of the 'community' who offered such encouragement. eg. yourself and cambo - thanks.

I also found making the re: order podcast an interesting creative exercise and my next project will be to combine the two... anyone care to join me?

I would say that with (an unrepresentative) 50% of the final 10 having female vocalists, the top ten definitely shows that the online community feel that there's a lack of the feminine touch here. for commIII I'm taking my top off too - and getting steve or bentley to produce my breasts.

I daresay that had Re: Order contributed something in their own right, rather than as guests of the board's resident knob :evil4: then you would have been surefire winners. A lot of people wouldn't have realised that it was you and Ian making big contributions to that track, and didn't vote because they thought it was Nick's work, and he's managed to piss them off in any one of a variety of ways ;)

Yet again with this project though, people have got wind of there being a free showcase competition and have turned up on the site for just long enough to register, then submitted a track and contributed absolutely zero to NOOL besides that track. They know who they are (though the chances of them actually reading this are nigh on zero). The guys I feel sorry for are the ones who are part of NOOL and who produced really good tracks, like Flight, Gnu Odor, Steve Campbell, Conrad, CTB, all of whom have been denied a place by people who are only "NOOL members" to get on the record, and who will probably never set foot in the place again.

thank you, I'll take that as you putting your hand up for the faketory all-stars podcast offer then!

we talked before about the unresolvable ironies of our respective bands working on CommII and the intractable conflict of imagination with authenticity. following the 'imagination' line we would have probably opted for a pseudonym anyway and ultimately I believe re: order would have met a similar fate to 'barneyarmy+' as the same production technique limitations would have hampered their work. but onward we go and with ever more experience at our disposal...

I agree with your latter point, although there are quite a few familiar names in the top ten (in part due to CommI) and the final word has to be that we all decided who put them on there. which is Al's point I guess. I would have been more happy knowing that the people I share a space with everyday had made it, and I'm not sure what the value of opening it to a wider audience of subscribers was - other than they apparently made more popular product. bastard muggles.

Sentiments echoed here.

Not wanting to appear too critical but there seems a bit of an arbitrary entry requirement for Community.

If the intention was to have a community of NOOL regulars record NO tracks for their (and our) enjoyment, well it's not really being accomplished. I don't know most of the finalists and frankly don't really care about them. Many don't contribute anything to NOOL outside of this comp. If it meant the risk of diminishing the final product quality just so we could have a laugh/admire the output of people we know, that'd be fine by me.

If the intention was to have a superior final product and open the comp up to all-comers, then why not be upfront about it? Why hide behind some NOOL member reqirement that clearly isn't stringent enough. It's not as though these winners mean more to us than anyone else who wants to record a NO track and enter outside of NOOL. They just worked out how to log onto NOOL and qualify where others didn't. If you go down this path, why call it Community? It all becomes a bit of a NOOL branding exercise rather than something that the regulars here can relate to.

I'm not criticising the efforts and organisation that goes into the whole project, it just leaves some of us a bit bemused as to its intentions.

We were informed that we shouldn't use the Re: Order connection on this track, that's why we didn't play it too much.

Well, you are probably talking about our #1 song there? Because all the others have been registered for a while on here.. I was quite surprised to see people were registered for more than 3 years, etc.

As for Al's comment, if Community 2 sells enough, we will be releasing Community 2.5, and if I check the list, most of the members you are talking about are making the cut of the second album.

To be honest, there was a lot of quality tunes this time around, I had a hard time selecting my own 20 because I left out at least 6 other songs I felt were worthy of making the cut. I ended up with 9 out of 10 on the album, and I voted on the first day to make sure the results wouldn't influence me. I did change one vote because of a promise I did to Kingspin that if he would finish his song, I would vote for it.

If tomorrow we do the 2nd disc, check who's on:

Gnu Odor, CTB, Steve Campbell, Flight, Manumatic, Barney Army, Razed In A New Division of Agony and CuanaD!

8 regulars!

And trust me, there is nothing more in the world I want than a second disc at this point, I pushed for a double album but we are doomed to a catastrophe if we do that because of the huge costs it would imply. (2500$ of licensing just to start with, might be more than that though)

Maybe a gentlemen VS players thing? Tho fuck knows how half of us would work out what team to be on (notwitstanding the poor state of Gentlemanly conduct round these parts  ). I mean I would be a "gentleman" based on being a NOOLer of some time served, but could not honestly say I was an out and out amateur ( Al Jarvis, whatever you're thinking of replying to that don't! ).

So perhaps.......

"outsiders" (sub1000 posts) VS "insiders" (1000+)

Bit too late to try and drop arbitrary battle lines onto this competition but mayhaps for C3? tho I would hope that's not for a coupla years.

Credit goes to everybody who was involved with C2 w/ some high quality and very marketable tunes submitted. Shame that only a dozen will make it to the CD. The way that I read the rules was to have some fun, record a song that in turn could Internationally advertise your band/ solo outfit with the starting point being a love for JD/ NO.
EDIT- the 2.5 CD sounds like an excellent idea. Even to have mention of all the bands that originally entered w/ web links to their sites and/ or original tunes if they'd like the advertising.

Congratulations to the winners...

I don't think it really matters how often they post or don't post here; the competition was open to all.

Jarvis sums up exactly what many NOOLers feared:

We would submit songs and be judged instead by our popularity on the forums.

Al, you might as well have lobbied for the Com2 entry rules to have been:

  1. You can only submit a song if a NOOL poll says you are a REAL NOOL Member (and we all know who they are, those kids who sit at the 'popular' table here....)

  2. You can only submit a song if you have over 5000 posts.

  3. You can only submit a song if you are a Viking or they like you....

Then you'd be happy, eh?

Hey, Al, you can always make your own Vikings Comm cd, and it will only be the REAL Noolers allowed.... I have such great ideas, eh?

:)

Spotnick, you seem to be implying that you're not happy with the outcome. Indeed, there's a general feeling of bemusement amongst all the regulars, who were just waiting to see what order the people we'd heard of would appear (and the liner notes, of course).

What's stopping you from just changing all the rules and doing what you want? It's your train set - play with it how you want.

If I were you, I would disqualify the top ten for taking it far too seriously and go straight to Community 2.5 - the cd we all want to see.

It would be a lot more Factory of you to "put out a record with a few of your mates" and there would be much more chance of organising performances of the versions on the disk at NOOL day.

If you feel the need for a bit of democracy, why not have a little poll - "Do it my way" or "Stick to the rules"?

If that doesn't go your way, you could ignore that too

Seems a massive shame for you to work so hard for something you're not 100% happy with, especially when the result hasn't got much to do with the 'Community' at all.

And Happy Birthday, Tarbox.

They could always just change the name of Com2 to

"Some New Order Covers by Folks Who Have Barely Posted at NOOL"

and then take your advice and make Com 2.5 into the real Com 2

Well, I think nobody can be completly pleased by the results unless they got 10 out of 10.

That's democracy... ;)

look, playtime's over....the bottom line is, loads of good new[1] music got made, there's nothing remotely negative about that so why make something of it?

Just SSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

I do admit I was very surprised to find that only 2 people I voted for were put on the CD... but then taking a moment back - I've got interesting likes of music... I don't always finish out majority vote on my picks.

I'm glad two of my picks got on though, because I really thought they were THAT fantastic. I'll just have to console myself with the unpicked's memory.

Free beer? That would be condoning alcoholism!

You should be ashamed! Trying to tempt people like that... even mentioning beer on this forum could cause someone to slip up and go out and get drunk....

And there are some underaged folks reading this forum.

Just what kind of message are you sending?

i see the album as a collection of covers made by new order fans, not necessarily NOOL platinum club members. if a bunch of mates want to throw together a NO tribute album and have a laugh about it that's fine, but it's not worth all the time and money nic, mike and others have invested in the project.

Strewth. You misread my comments entirely, Tarby. As usual. I've stated from the start that I had absolutely no interest in this project. I like New Order. End of. I don't give a fuck about other people's versions of New Order songs. And why should I?! There's enough new muzak out there without having to sit down and listen to 'takes' on songs I don't even listen to any more by the artiste 'proper'.

But, Nic implied it was our duty to give this a shot. And I made a half-hearted attempt at it. And voted for people I know. And why not? What interest do I have in someone on the other side of the globe's 'take' on New Order songs? Nothing. Hearing your mates do something though, now that interests me.

I really don't give a fcuk who gets onto Community2 so don't suggest there should be a Viking CD, or whatever, because As I Have Stated A Billion Times I have no interest in covers.

Why you're whinging is beyond me anyways. You have made barbed comments about Digital (I think?) or possibly Re-Order on this very forum a year back for showing a 'lack of imagination' (I think this was your comment?) for doing cover versions and you, yourself, have been very dismissive of cover bands cos you write your own material. So fcuk knows why this has got your goat now.

Anyways, all the winners aren't well known posters here, so you really have no reason to stamp your feet, now do you?

I'd like to leave an "outsiders" viewpoint here. I came across this site purely by accident in December and therefore stumbled upon the Community II competition. I am not a regular user of the Internet and never will be, I'm not of the Messenger/bulletin board generation - does that mean I'm not a genuine fan of New Order ?

Acoustic Division are complete amatuers and were never likley to end up winning (eliminated in the first round, 51st in the final) but that does not mean that it wasn't an amazing experience for me and especially my 13 year old daughter (obviously not a bona fide NO fan). It seems to me that the whole point of the competition was to give New Order fans with varying degrees of muscial ability an opportunity to have like minded fans listen to their interprations and enjoy other peoples takes of their favourite songs. I've had an absolute blast listeneing to other peoples versions, commenting on them and getting feedback on our own contribution. If you listen to the songs I don't think you can argue that they were not done by genuine fans.

Now there's the crucial question - was the competition for fans or long time members of NOOL ? I think the rules are clear as can be - just like the Scottish Football rules that stated that although Morton finsihed second top of their division, clear by 13 points, they still could not get promoted cos they lost out in the playoffs. The rules are clear at the start of the season for everyone.

Quite frankly, if people on here are so precious about their closed shop website then they can stick it up their collective arses and I'll feck off and never darken it's pages again.
