Strewth (again). It's got fcuk all about being a Closed Shop. You yourself hit the nail on the head - you took an interest because you submitted an entry. I don't know you so explain to me in simple terms as to why I should give a flying one about your entry, or indeed any entries.

As I've already stated, the only ones I showed an interest was with people I've met. Whether that be the likes of Candy in Oz or Churchy in the US, though I barely spoke to either of them for 5mins max. But I've met them, so if they produce some muzak, I'm happy to give it a blast. That's just human nature. I mean, for fuck's sake, I like a good wedding. But funnily enough I only go to weddings of people I know, I wouldn't gatecrash someone else's just for the fun of it. Poor analogy, but there you go. Just cos I like New Order DOES NOT MEAN I need to take any interest whatsoever in other people's covers of New Order. The only interest I have is of the 'human' kind looking at the work of people I know.

Why some people find this so incredulously hard to fathom is entirely beyond me.

Bob

Some are, Bob, but by no means all... Arguments seem to be a way of life here... Don't 'feck off' on account of what a few people say about the Commmunity thing...

Rather simplistic, I feel. Nobody at all (that I am aware of, anyway) wants this website to be a closed shop, far from it. Everyone is welcome to contribute.

However, there was quite a lot of bad feeling amongst some of the site members at the time of Community I three years ago that some of the artists who made it onto the record were not contributors to the site, but were bands/artists who had heard about the competition and had decided to join up just to get on the record, and who then disappeared back where they came.

These reservations were aired when Community II was announced, before any voting started, and we were assured by the organisers that there would not be a repeat of the previous happenings. Instead, when it got underway, it transpired that the cut-off point was set so that in order to vote you had to have been registered before the song submission deadline, effectively preventing vote rigging but not preventing the people who have no interest in the site but who were merely interested in getting on a record.

Is it really that much to expect for people who are given a free record release to stick around a bit and at least try and contribute something to the site? Of those who made it onto Community I, 5 acts have not subsequently been around, indeed they didn't even try to compete in Community II.

Of the top 10 as voted by the NOOL membership for Community II, 5 have contributed little or nothing before the competition started, and about ten posts between them since the results were announced. Hardly part of a Community!

Don't know if the 'simplistic' was aimed at what I wrote, Tim... All I was saying was that Bob shouldn't abandon ship because of what some people are saying about Community2 - I read in what he wrote that he would stick around, post a bit, maybe, if there wasn't so much hostility... If people get involved and start posting, etc. because of entering the competition, that's a good thing, right... Having people scared off isn't... I was just saying that not everyone cares whether the C2 entrants are regular posters or not, although I understand perfectly why some may feel 'cheated' by folks getting a song on the CD and then disappearing without trace...

You know, losing out to some randoms who did great tracks didn't bother me in the very slightest.

this carping and whimpering about it, and making arguments out of people raising valid things they want to air......that's deeply fucking annoying. If I were Spotty or wenn I'd be sitting there RIGHT now looking at a dialogue saying "are you sure you want to delte the folder C2 and all it's contents"

This isn't about scaring people off, Dave, far from it. But if Bob, or whoever, thinks I should take an interest in their output just cos it's a cover of New Order, then they're mistaken. But I will generally take an interest in the work of people I know. If Digital or Re-Order had done a cover of "Singing in the Rain" I'd have still taken a look at it, just cos I know them. Like I've said, that's human nature. My original point basically said it was a shame that more people didn't vote for the people they know. 3 of the 4 Digital lads are contributors here, as are 4 of the 5 Re-Order/Barney Army combo. If everyone who'd met the lads I've just mentioned actually had the decency to vote for them then they'd have each had 100 votes per track.

I've stated my ambivalence towards this project from the Day Dot (I was the same with the Original Community too) so why I have to defend my complete ambivalence now is beyond me.

DITTO!

Although I didn't enter and I didn't vote (couldn't get it to work...)

This thread is complete bollocks!

Al, Ok, you're only interested in your mate's work, but would it really be so hard to give a few mins listening time to other people's tracks as well?

Asking that we loyally vote for regular posters is KER-RAP!

Surely we should loyally vote for the song we think is the best!

If this isn't a closed community, then complaining about the lack of support from regular posters, for other regular posters, makes no sense at all.

I really can't believe this thread exists; such a positive project is being piddled all over!

Look at my voting. I did the people I know, then a couple I was intrigued by. I know I voted for Murder cos I liked what they'd attempted to do with it. I had no idea who that artist was.

But expecting me to sit down and listen to - what? - sixty tracks, was it, simply because they're New Order cover versions?! Oh, please. When do people find the time to do that?! No soundcard at work so that's out of the equation unfortunately.

Fair play to all those involved but, quite frankly, I had no real interest in this project. I fail to see why people find that so hard to fathom. And I really don't understand why I have to defend myself on this. If this album is supposedly representative of this Community then fine, but I personally don't see it.

And your opinion is valid because? You obviously give such a toss about this that you didn't even lift a finger!

That bloody word "community" just seems to cause trouble, dunnit?? Call it something more neutral, I reckon.

It's probably representative of what the community likes to vote for, rather than what it is comprised of.

YES. I. DID. LIFT. A. FINGER.

I tried 4 times to get the damn thing to work; it wouldn't! Maybe it's my computer!?

Fair enough. Did you take it up with Spotnick?

I tried too, but put it down to my computer being a big pile of crap.

Nope; I saw a few people had the same problem so I didn't want to increase the size of his headache being only one fish in a big sea.

I do care about community, but as I couldn't make the damn thing work I just figured I would wait for the end product...

I even had problems with the original community- I tried to buy the CD and EP about 6 times... but again the computer was screwing me around...

Hopefully this time my computer and a C2 purchase will interact better> I've never had trouble buying stuff online before.

Everyone's reason for being interested in or not interested in a bunch of New Order covers is as valid as everybody elses. For some, the idea of listening to 50+ of these may be thrilling, or may seem as much fun as knawing your own leg off. Some would like to do it, but don't have the time, and some have the time to agonize over every beat of every version.

I think the reason people are taking issue with you Al, is that you claim not to give a fuck about the whole thing apart from supporting your mates (fair enough approach), but seem to think that it would be better if everyone approached Community in the same way as you. Why should they?

Steve Campbell talks a lot of sense on this thread.

Woo hoo - It IS just like Florida! Community 2 has got chodes!

(Was it chodes? Those little flaps of cardboard on the voting slips.)

nic offered the shift in perspective elsewhere that still seems to be the point to me.

the community tag was for voting rights rather than contribution rights. the editing rights and control of the material on the album was the privilege and property of all those registered on this site. if everyone chose to vote for their chums only or for bands that don't post here because they liked their music better and wanted to see those bands on 'their' CD then how is that not an example of community action? this divergent points of view represented here perhaps come from the perception of there being two different 'communities' : the community of forum users who are able to vote and the community of forum users who are also musicians. the number of voters on this site outweigh the number of musical contributors so that would also support the notion of the album being their community's property. [while also recognising that the musician's involvement makes for a greater emotional attachment - even the most severely myopic contributor would only want to be on an album of the best quality material]

I also think that post-result, everyone comments have been generalised to be 'moans'. I took Al's opening post as an observation rather than a complaint.

to me the whole process and the ideology has been quite transparent. however, the technology wasn't. so I only ever got to hear less than 2 mins of each track through the profiles. [and if you think I've got the bandwidth/time to download every podcast and scroll through the original compositions and original NO... well, like Al I don't have the level of interest to sustain that commitment across 70 odd 1hr pieces of media] at worst, community II is just a victim of its own success.

If this was done in the true spirit of the band and the pre-gig meet-ups (frankly, the only time there's ever a genuine sense of 'community'), the finalists would have been chosen via a drinking competition: all day on the Stella, the last people to pass out get to appear on the eventual CD.

More democratic, more fun, and infinitely healthier (in a social sense, at least) than tippety-tapping away at your wee keyboards in varying degrees of righteous rage.

"Community" always was a shit name for this, as was pointed out at great length by a number of people at the time of the first record.

Given the way this place has become a virtual battleground at times, it is now bordering on parody!

You lot all want thrashing, seriously.

Al says his piece, which I disagree with but can handle, and everyone kicks off.

If you do not like the results of the competition....here's an astounding idea...burn the ones YOU like to a cdr and save yerself a tenner.

a more ungrateful and argumentative shower of shites I never met. Now, ALL of you, have a fucking Jelly baby and shut the fuck up.

DC, any sense I may have made here was purely down to the "infinite number of monkeys at an infinite number of typewriters" phenomenon

If we're gonna have a Community offering then I personally think it should at least be representative of this Community.

Community isn't. It's as relevant to me personally as any other cover versions which have come before, whether that be Paul Young's LWTUA or Moby's Temptation. They're just covers done by people I don't know and I have no connection with.

That was almost funny, and would have been had we not submitted said song as our Community II entry! (Which, thankfully got the panning it deserved, being shite. You can't polish a turd.)

To make it more 'Communal'; maybe next time limit entries to the 1st 20 NOOL members who enter who have also made at least 1,000 posts.

Maybe a bit harsh on newbies, so why not call it 'BRUTAL'.

what, a CD of people arguing and talking shit? :-)

the CD is representative of the tastes of the people on this site (ie that community)

and cambo, as I pointed out in my previous post, there's a tendency to simplify everyone's point of view here. my comments about the project and the post match discussion weren't moans - so hold back from lumping everyone's discussion points in as being negative

Sorry SC, I read this thread as an exchange of opinions, comments on the opinions of others and you popping up every now and again shrieking at everyone to shut up and threatening to thrash people.

Them babies are full of additives you know. Perhaps you should share them around, they’re doing your head in!

What a kerfuffle!!! Perhaps the next one should be called "I'm So Grateful That I'd Like to Run My Tongue Along the Throbbing Shaft of Steve Campbell's Cock"??

Or maybe "Commode"????

And Tim Jauncey should be BANNED FOREVER for not liking "Ultraviolence". It's a right toe-tapper, after all!!!!
