Weekly JD Song Review #1

Borrowing Major's idea, let's expand it to Joy Division material. Same format - i.e. Best bit/worst bit/Like or dislike/Percentage.

This week's song is New Dawn Fades.

1. Best bit - the bassline. Absolute killer, instantly addictive.

2. Worst bit - the Moby cover !

3. Like/dislike about it - it's way ahead of its time in terms of construction, a work of genius that really benefits from Martin Hannett's production.

4. 98%. Nearly perfect.

1.Best bit - Sumners guitar-work, the lyric -"Oh I've walked on water, run through fire, can't seem to fell it anymore"

2.Worst bit - There is no "worst bit".......... what a stupid question (apart from the moby cover)

3.Like/dislike - A constructed piece of pure Art

4.100%.Pure perfection,pure GENIUS

1. The opening (so wierd even after all this time)
2. Very few decent live versions of it (like the Birmingham one)
3. It's almost like Lady Godiva's Operation by the VU in that it's full of menace, but just beneath the surface.
4. 100%

1 Best bits: The lyrics, the bass, the sequence at the end of a perfect album side.

2. Worst bit: Moby's version, though it's not the worst cover of a song that I've ever heard.

3. Loved it from the first time I heard it; edgy lyrics about personal politics in relationships. Classic!

the guitars are beautiful here, as is ians voice, which gradually rises in desperation. it climaxes with the line "it was ME..." debbie curtis even knew that this was at least partially about suicide while ian was still alive, just after he had written it.

no worst part, i like the whole fucking thing.

i think i answered one and three with my first bit of rambling. i will say also that i throroughly enjoyed the version on still as well (i heard it BEFORE the UP version, and was the main reason i bought UP). when ian raises his voice, he distorts the entire PA. that was badass.

i give it 100%, in tribute to the sonic youth song of the same name
