Did Joy Division invent New Wave as we know it today??

At least among some circles, David Bowie and Brian Eno are credited with inventing New Wave with Bowie's 1976 "Low" album.

What a bizarre question. How can one band be credited with inventing a dynamic sound that is representative of a period of years. Even if it is the live/ to studio changed sound of JD.

Someone beat me to it,I would say,even though the term doesn't go back that far,but the sound dates back to The Velvet Underground.

Joy Division created Goth music, New Wave, and shaped alternative rock to be as we know it today, with meloncholy. Ian also was one of the first rock singers to purposefully kill himself. No accidental drug overdose or any of that, he killed himself like that was what was meant for him. Maybe the most influential band of all time.
