No, there are a few similarly minded souls around. Not many though, thankfully!
I had no choice, I heard JD first and was hooked instantly. More addictive than crack! NO was a lateral progression.
Weirdly i got into New Order first and then discovered Joy Division. Love them both, but probably prefer New Order a little bit more.
I'm more of a NO fan, then JD fan. I do like some of the stuff that JD put out and I will work on getting more of their stuff once I finish my hunt for the NO CD's I'm missing.

A couple of years after getting into NO I tried Unknown Pleasures on the recommendation of a friend- I thought it was completely different, but totally amazing!
Took a while longer to appreciate the full back catalogue, but love it all now- NO and JD are quite different beasts though, so not surprising that JD isn't everyone's cup of tea and vice versa for NO.
I also got into NO first then found out about JD later. NO is my favorite band of all time. I like JD too, but not nearlty enough. So, I am on board with you, mate.
I'm a New Order Fan. Or should I say Barney fan. I hate Ian's voice. So I hate Joy Divsion. But I love their songs when Barney sings them. So to put it simply, I love Joy divsion songs, hate their singer. The best thing for me is if New Order does a JD cover cd, then I will be set.

For a relatively short career, JD have the more 'classic' songs per release....by far.
New Order
Joy Division pretty good,with some quality tunes,but not a patch on New Order for me...
Probably got into both bands at the same time roundabout, leaning more towards JD.
Would say that i listen to a lot more NO than JD nowadays though. Love both bands

I don't know about that...NO have a bigger catalogue than JD, and I'd argue that half of Singles alone is full of genuine classics, and that's not even dusting off the track listings on their studio albums.
JD came first and it took me longer to get into NO, but somewhere along the line I became hooked. Kind of like falling in love again and actually enjoying the feeling more than the first time through.

I would`ve loved to get into Jill Dando,but shes with Ian now.
I don't think of them as different bands. Like any other band they evolved in their style.
It took a while for me to appreciate the stuff that was different from what I was originally into, but now I like it all.
I was smitten with JD originally and am since totally enamoured with NO. For me, it was love at first listen and I find it very hard to find examples of anyone more artistically gifted at their chosen types of music no matter what version of the band you prefer. I have approximately 5000 total lps of which about 70% are alternative/new wave/independent/punk and still at times when I think I have nothing to listen to, I can go back to jd/no and never be disappointed! I have music with me wherever I go (thank gawd for ipod)and watch probably a total of 3 hours telly a week so obviously they have provided a backdrop to my life for the 28 odd years i have been listening to them.:)
Nah, marcus, you're not the only one. A good bit of my friends can't get into Joy Division because they tend look at the music from the wrong angle. And they refuse to listen to Unknown Pleasures or any of the wonderful singles to beat their complaint "it's all doomy music" to the ground.
Similarily I know a good bunch of people who are only into Joy Division and can't get into New Order at all. That's what doesn't make sense to me.
Myself, I got into New Order first because I heard them first, but Joy Division definitely holds a good candle to them and I've loved both bands on their own merits for almost 2 decades.
I suppose my only question would be what is it about Joy Division's sound you don't like? Also, what singles and/or albums have you heard?
i like JD, but they don't have the same effect on me as new order do. NO have better songs--less morose. granted, ian's voice is the better of the two, but i'd take new order any day!

What makes Ian a better singer? It sure took Bernard a while, but Technique and Electronic have better vocals (in a technical since) than Ian's ever did. Frankly, Ian's best vocals are on Closer and LWTUA, and parts of the Peel sessions. Was his overall delivery more captivating than Bernard's? Yes until PCL.

Maybe I'm just a pop boy at heart- because I quite like LWTUA. Got into New Order first and have always been a much bigger fan of their stuff than JD although of course they really are the same band.I bought Closer after i had bought all NO's albums and found it very difficult to get into,took me ages.But then i loved Unknown Plesures on very first listen.
I have enjoyed playing Closer many times over the years but New Order's sound always captivated and mesmerised me way more than JD.

I think.. I cannot promise, but I think you'd probably like Substance a lot better than Closer. Closer's a really beautiful album but if you do like a bit more poppier/faster bounce to your songs, stuff like Transmission, Digital, These Days, Novelty, etc... probably would be more your thing. Doesn't help on the vocal aspect, as you've mentioned you like Bernard's more, but it's a start. 
In any case, I'd sort out a cheap used copy if you do go after finding it. No sense paying top dollar if you don't like it much in the end.
