Female singers

So we've all lamented the backup singing (or at least most of us). However, I think it's largely a problem in the group's choice of singers. Personally I think it'd be great if they let Verity Susman of Electrelane join them on a future track. Anyone else agree or have other ideas, aside from getting Gillian to do something?

No offence, but I've never heard of the female singer you mentioned, so I can't really comment on her, but I really think that they shouldn't use female background singers.

i love the background singers on subculture. then again, i also like the pointer sisters....

I think the usage of background singers adds a new dimension to the band. I absolutely love the backup singer parts in "subculture". It adds that extra 'layer' to the intensity of it.

As for "Crystal"... well, it is a little cheesy, but they could have gone about it a little differently, but not leaving out the background singer altogether. But it's still cool.

The whole Ana thing in "Jetstream"... it adds a funky kind of an effect to it and again, it would be missing something without it. Its playful (like the song), and I think she and Barney's voices go very well together, oddly.

I'm used to it! LOL!!

But, I'm not saying they should fully go out and use backups for everything, permanently.. or have a female backup singer come out on tour with them. That.. I don't think would really come together right at all.

Even the Ana thing gets annoying after a while with Jetstream. On the album, it's kinda cool, but the live .. it seems to take away. (I know, I probably sound kind of contradictory here.)

But, on the album version of "Subculture".. I really like it.

Even the band hate that version of Subculture! Hooky disowned it 20 years ago!

Thing about the backing vocals on Crystal - they add to the song, they are integral to the timing of Bernard's vocals. It's actually quite difficult to sing the main vocal line (and I'm getting enough practice since we added it to our set!) without that harmony line to give the timing, as the guitar part Bernard plays is slightly at odds with the drum pattern.

In general, I agree with BizarreLoemon. I do think the female vocals work. I can't think of anyone in particular I'd recommend for new projects. Maybe Bjork or Shirley Manson. Bjork's singing might not be the greatest, but she is very innovative and daring, and if she had some creative input could perhaps help NO do something special. Or something disasterous.

Im all for the female backing vocals,but think the Ana Matronic thing was surely a marketing gimmick? Dawn Zee would have done just as good a job. Denise Johnston was a good singer,did she do any New Order of just Electronic/ACR stuff?

Don't the the Scissor Sisters site New Order as one of their biggest influences?

Maybe I'm just being biased in a sense, but Ana sounded pretty cool on Jetstream. Like I said, the song itself is kinda cheesy, but without her vocal addition, it would have been.. missing.. something.

Shirley Manson would be a REALLY cool choice.
