Pogues - Couldn't have a bad word said (apart from perhaps - "teeth"?)

Charlatans - along with the mighty Order they are pure Gods in my eyes, almost everything they've done is class, why only number 46? AND why no chuffing Order!

Like Shug I also like a quantity of those mentioned but I almost forgot to 'tut tut' the inclusion of the Jam. That's Entertainment...

Blur - just who did they influence?

The Verve? - weren't they just copies of womething better?

Even if you take the list for what it is (which is a list of the acts that influenced the NME most) it is highly questionable. The Strokes, The Verve, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Eminem, Culture Club and The KLF haven't made enough of an impact on the music scene to merit sufficient coverage to get them into the Top 50 (and there's only one reason why The Strokes are on the list and that's because the NME wants to please them in the hope that they will invite their hacks to their next party). The Fall, The Jesus and Mary Chain and The Pogues may have been around longer but they've been too peripheral to merit sufficient coverage. The Velvet Underground and The Pixies should have been higher up the list given that most alternative bands are indebted in some way to at least one of them and the Manic Street Preachers probably should have been higher up too (although if any publication was obsessed with the Manics it was Melody Maker). I could go on pointing out other strange decisions (Blur higher than R.E.M.? Is this a joke?) but I think too much time has already been wasted on this pointless exercise.

Sorry Shuglet, you misunderstood my tutting! I am a huge Jam campaigner, I was tutting at the fact that VG had ridiculed them ( and I might add the profession I chose at age 4 - to marry Paul Weller) I had the red leather jacket and everything - where did I go wrong

i'm not british, but my personal take on these stupid lists is that they mean squat! it's kinda silly knocking off someone's stupid idea of what's great, cuz in the end, their opinion really doesn't matter unless they have the authority and the credibility to make that judgement. otherwise, it's just a popularity contest that name drops some credible and somewhat obscure names to sound credible.

p.s. how come the majority of this list has british bands? did they forget the rest of the world?

Saw it in the metro this morning. Rubbish list. IN fairness to the bunch of gimps it is the bands that have influenced THEM the most - i.e. taken up the most column space etc.

I don't think the Strokes are so shit hot they' should have taken up almost as much column inches in 18months than JD/NO have in 20 odd years.

I think they should have left spots 2 through 4 blank, just to leave proper space between the Smiths and all other bands...

Imitators include All Saints, Dream, N*Sync, and many other all-girl groups. They starred in their own movie, Spice World, after about 10 minutes together. They had dolls made of them (my niece-in-law keeps a naked Baby Spice in a wicker basket...much as I might do). They've been linked to royalty in all sorts of tabloid rumors. They've been name-checked in songs by Sticky, Eminem, and others. They appear in the style guides of the venerable Times and Guardian newspapers so square old journos don't embarrass the country by screwing up their names in print.

Girl you know it's true...Spice Girls are the true number one. What say you?

....but the NME have barely acknowledged their existence...and they're therefore not on the list
