When you think of Joy Division you think of ???

When you think of Joy Division, which tracks spring into your mind straight away ? Transmission, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Colony ??

I'd have to say Shadowplay ... Barneys guitar sends shivers up my spine everytime I hear it ... I have days where I hear that song in my head all day .... Can't get it out ... Well I don't really want to either ...

Also Wilderness ... Especially the live version ... Would do anything to go back in time and see that song live ...

For some reason I think of the haunting cloaks in the Atmosphere video and the slow laborious marching with Ians angst ridden face on the big carried board screen type thingy.

In 1981 myself and some doom squad friends from school decided to go camping near Battle in Sussex England. We found the perfect spot next to a 1900 century limestone crypt like monument in a secluded woodland area, where one could indulge in copious amounts of alcohol and spliffs without interference from creeps and squares. We partied well into the early hours on that April night, my friend George who had previously attended one of the first New Order gigs at Waltamstow Assembly Halls, played us the most brilliant album Ive ever heard Closer`and the track that has always stuck in my head is Decades. Closer has it all, makes me want to top myself :dead:

Always think of Transmission, the first song of theirs I'd actually heard.

I think of "Something Must Break" and "Dead Souls" My faves by them, and I think of how Ian Curtis was listening to Iggy Pop before he killed himself! Or at least I had read that somewhere.

24 Hours just sits there like a huge untamed beast. If any one song encapsulates Ian's frame of mind, it's this one. It was debuted the day he met Annik Honore, so wasn't about her appearance in his life, despite what the words may infer.

When New Order hosted Rage in Australia, they were talking about the making of the Atmosphere video clip and how somebody stole the gigantic picture thingy of Ian Curtis that was used in the clip. They had a little laugh about it. Anyone from Neworderonline guilty of the crime ?

Anyways, I always go back to She's Lost Control, especially the live version they did on 'Something Else' back in '79, because seeing that on my college roomie's computer (the second-semester one into Eighties techno, not the first-semester Phish-head) was the first time I had ever seen Ian dance, and it just registered with me so much that I haven't been able to tear myself away from JD. For me, there've been two or three important groups in my musical life: The Beatles, The Who, and the Banana Splits....oops, meant to say Joy Division! Oh well, here they are in smilies:

dead souls-- the first moment of trancendence(spelling??) while listening to JD. the mechanical feeling of the guitar and bass melodies, the drums that sound like a machine, the explosive tension even in the calm parts, and when the voice comes in, it is like being punched in the stomach

The recurring image in my head inspired by Joy Division is of a glass tank on a raised platform, about a metre off the ground, measuring about 4m long 2m wide and 2m high. This tank is in a disused, dark, dank, factory at night in the winter.

New Years Day 2002, knackered and with stinking hangover decide to clean out the cobwebs by taking a walk in the snow with Joy Division 'Substance' blasting through my headphones - lovely! :)
