Here's a new trivia teaser with a strong FACTORY bent for those of you who have been starved of my wonderfully controversial brain-picklers for so long.....and let's face it......you just know you were!!

The aforementioned prestigious prize is on offer (true!) to the complete swot who can manage to get ALL the questions right here so, don your thinking caps on, dim the lights, whack on "Palatine" (failing that, a spoken word tape of Tony Wilson rambling on will do just as well), open a few crates, light a few Marlboroughs and just let those answers come floating back from the deep dank inner recesses of your memory....

Here goes...

1) Which Latino-esque band did Mike Pickering front long before he finally hit the big time with the honking goose and M-People? And what was the title of their only album? 2) Name the latest Chameleons "comeback" album. Which famous small venue near Manchester will the Chameleons play /have played on 29th April this year? 3) Julia Nagle and Chris Nagle used to front which experimental noisenik band of the late 80s? 4) On which New Order album track can be heard quite clearly the sound of a ricocheting gunshot (around the two-and-a-half-minute mark)? 5) Dave Haslam held which funk night at The Boardwalk club in 1992? And what was the name of the legendary fanzine he started in the mid 1980s? 6) Who or what was given the catalogue numberFac 191? 7) Simon Topping - formerly of A Certain Ratio - currently plays as percussionist for which celebrated local Latin ensemble? 8) Bruce Mitchell is regarded as the other main protagonist in which stalwart Manchester band? 9) And which Manchester singer's first solo album did his collaborator play extensively on? 10) In the 1984 Channel 4 programme about New Order and Factory Records "Play At Home", which two people were filmed riding around a field on a motorcycle? 11) Oasis were the second Mancunian band to be signed to Creation Records. Who were the first? 12) Legendary Manc Oddball from the eighties, Edward Barton sang about having no chicken.....but what did he have?? 13) To finish with, the ultimate toughie then..... Here is an extract from a witty review taken from a 1986 edition of "Sounds". Which underground Manchester band was getting the cold shoulder from poison scribe Ron Rom....?

"It's innovative...it's interesting...ahh! I concede, pull my nipples off and sell them as walnuts, place my head on a spike outside the Tower of London and spit in My face. I have to come clean, ******** are rubbish! I wanted songs, and all I got was a slap in the face for being so presumptious."Let us take the formula: Latin-funk music played at the speed of The Ramones. Really different, eh?......They sound like Level 42 on Mars. They sound like they're trying to masturbate with mousetraps!....."Y'see, ******** snub the idea of a song and prefer to do all the things mother convention told them they couldn't. An odd twist is always a good thing but when you get a three minute pop song with a million paranoid twists attentions stray........ ******** are trash at its most pretentious....."

Right, if that hasn't scared half of you away, let's face it...nothing will! :D :D

Some of the numbers are split into two questions... granted...but I know what you mean about number 5. Dave Haslam is NOT originally from Manchester of course (but from Birmingham) but the point is, these are people who MADE THEIR MARK whilst being here. Same goes for Edward Barton - he's a southerner by birth and accent!! ;)

I don't care! I'm not playing any more. I'm taking my ball and I'm going home. :( ;)

Well you've pulled out some obscure stuff here Marty, some of these are bastard hard..

  1. Quando Quango - Pigs & Battleships. Pickering also performed as T-Coy.
  2. Why Call It Anything/Witchwood. Some other local legends played this venue on April 5?.
  3. Angel Dust
  4. Yellow/Debris
  5. The Hacienda Cat (Feline Groovy At The Hac)
  6. Durutti Column
  7. Morrissey, Viva Hate Album. Was asked to collaborate on next album but things didn't work out.
  8. Hook & Erasmus
  9. The Bodines
  10. Dunno, saw Barton play live at Liverpool Uni in 1986, supporting James, v.strange, can recall 1 track 'I slap my belly', which involved him doing exactly that. Had an album called 'Edward not Edward' or something similar.

Have to get thinking about the others, but don't feel optimistic.

You've no reason to be UNoptimistic Johnno, you're tied with Death Of Art as being the best informed of the answers so far, again, you are only four answers short of the whole kit and caboodle!! Looks like number 13 really is proving a bit of a stinker, but there IS, nevertheless, a FACTORY link with this band - their guitarist formed a very shortlived band and released just ONE 12" EP on the label before giving up music to become an ambassador of sorts for a local Homeless Building project.....now think on!! ;)

Here's my attempt Marty....

1 - It's either T-Coy or Quando Quango - can't remember exactly which band was first... 2 - Why Call It Anything?. Venue - not too sure about that one. Don't live in Manchester so wouldn't really know would I? ;) 3 - Is it Dub Sex? King of The Slums? 4 - Angel Dust (I think, can't be any other tracks as noisy as that one!) 5 - Not too sure about this one... 6 - The Hacienda Cat ! 7 - The name escapes me at the moment 8 - Durutti Column 9 - Vini Reilly played on Morrisseys "Viva Hate" 10 - Hooky and ? ? ? 11 - Haven't the foggiest, man! 12 - Five Teddy Bears or something like that? 13 - Haven't a clue!

sorry mate - I'm knackered - I should be in bed now anyway!

No, seriously....I like maintaining a sense of order to these kind of things, so if no one gets this teaser and clinches the mystery prize, then the opening of Room 101 can only be delayed further [a la London Records' release schedules].... now you know and I know that's not we want is it??? !! ;)

Are you listening.... AYWKMBTTOEGAT ??!! :D :D :D

Biting Tongues is NOT the correct artist I'm afraid m'lud.

Where's Jarvo when we need him? He'll know this one I'm sure!!!! ;)

Martin, I'm a colonial. So I've never heard of any other band on Factory except OMD (they were a one hit wonder, right?) and Happy Mondays who were a one hit wonder as well with "Steppin' on".;) I know James too but don't know that they started on Factory. When your quiz came out I got the Angel Dust one and that was it. Somebody help me!! Mr. Jarvis, help!?

I reckon I could name 50% of these, no problem.

But am not sure of the point of this.

I'm not a Manc, nor is Marty, and nor is anyone else on this board that post regularly. So, er, what's the point? To like NewOrder, does not mean to say you, in any way, have to like all Mancs. Having briefly lived in Mancland I have to say, the air is far cleaner Darn Sarf.

Oooh you are a miserable soul today - this is just a little quiz for "fun" !! That's all!! ;) Remember the golden age of the "teaser" that used to get everyone excitedly wetting their knickers at the pros[ect of the cheeky elusive answer! That's what this one is - only with a few more questions!! So chin up! It's just for fun before the true madness that is "Room 101" gets reopened for the masses to wallow once more in... :D

Surely a lot of people who post here know stuff about Factory? Then that's what the point of this thread's about! To just test people on their Fac Knowledge - it's nothing new - after all, how many other threads on this forum are "recycled" ideas? A lot I'd say!! :)

So go on - show us what you can do matey! ;)

And, no, I'm not playing! ;)

So there!

Right Okay! The title has now been amended in a bid to try and ensnare a few more of you into taking part in this quiz.

Here's the deal. Either more of you get off your lazy apathetic butts and attempt to solve this teaser and thus claim the exclusive prize....... OR.......

.....The relaunch of Room 101 gets it....

:violent: :violent: Room 101 Revival :headoff: :headoff:

...does one get any points whatsoever if one only answers the questions that haven't yet been answered in this thread? ;)

cos i'd feel almost as though it were cheating were i to answer things that have already been answered (and correctly, too!) previously...

and finally, if anyone else wants to join our world and play our game, 'twould make me do a dance of joy. :D and it can have as much or as little to do with Manchester and/or your knowledge of Manc bands/people/places/things as you'd like! ;)

Thanks to time zones, I'm actually 53 minutes early rather than seven minutes late.

To express unpleasantness, I usually like to use the analogy of cocksucking involving an animal, and usually one stricken with venereal disease at that (e.g., this sucks syphallitic platypus cock). However, I've been trying to branch out and discover new metaphors. I thought that cocksucking involving the corpse of John Merrick, a man with a world-famous disfiguring disease, would most closely approximate the unease I felt hearing you review a track I had not heard.

Perhaps I should have capitalized Elephant Man to signify the reference to a specific person.

Either way, it still sucks.

the relative suckage or non-suckage of that statement was never in dispute; don't worry. i suspected this was what you meant, but was indeed not sure. however, i obviously can't say much about lack of capital letter usage now, can i?

but it could've been meant in an elephantine sense. or as some random stream-of-consciousness thing...ie, elephant-man-cock. only obviously with hyphenation only mental and not written.

i suppose this might well answer how grimy fuck might be as well, though. you get a B+ for effort. :D

Nice try Gnu. But that isn't the answer to question 13 that I was looking for..... ;)

My favorite review ever was in Stereo Review about a million years ago, regarding an Air Supply record.

After observing, "The guy sings likes he's about to tear his lungs out...and you wish he would," the reviewer concludes simply but unequivocally, "If you buy this record you will die."

I didn't buy it.

My Bloody Valentine, incidentally, were often regarded as one of the first bands to really put the HURTS into kilohertz. :D

Anyway - I still can't remember to this day exactly what did happen to the lead singer of Air Supply after he held that note for so fooking long.....maybe his backside split from the rest of him and launched a solo career of its own....who knows? But tellingly, no sign or whimper was ever heard from them again after that record.

Perhaps we should be thankful then..... ;)

i'd believe that, about the Valentines! :D sadly, though...never did get to see them live! did you, perchance...?

as for the Air Supply prat, regardless of whether he was ever heard from again after that, i still think that the most suitable punishment for his crimes against humanity would be for him to be locked in room, chained to a chair, and forced to listen to Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" for 399 hours STRAIGHT. no breaks. on continuous loop.

'course, some might say i'm being a bit too harsh...

Two points:
1)NO, sadly I, too, never saw the Valentines live - even their legendary "Rollercoaster" support with the Jesus and Mary Chain in 1992....

  1. A better song to torture someone with would be the last two minutes of Whi(t)ney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You" spliced with Mariah Carey's version of "Without You" and Michael Bolton's version of "When A MAAAAHERRNNN Loves A WomAAAAN" - put on an endless tape loop...... I reckon the guy's ears will be rendered completely useless and drop off his head after about 35 minutes anyway.

...'kay, you win. :D though for added torture, you can give a double dose of Pariah (s)Carey with the cover of "AAAAAHHHH'll Be There" that she and that one other fellow who was every "new diva" in the world's backing singer for awhile had done. was awhile ago... :nonono:

and that's a double bill i would've killed to see, i think. Valentines and J*A*M*C? *drools*

i DID manage to see the J*A*M*C at one point, though. was an alright show...not brilliant. don't recall who they played with. only recall that we were lucky, as they seem to have had a habit of touring with stuff from the album just previous to whichever one had been released in time for their tour of the moment...

...so we ended up with stuff from Honey's Dead. which was really the last good thing (IMHO) they did...and i really did like that album a lot.

...which makes me wonder if they ever toured here after Phil King went and joined them on bass...? would've been very strange to see him onstage with them...

...am musing out loud again. don't mind me. ;)

Before I try and return in vain to the original subject matter of this thread (there's the small matter of a trivia teaser to be getting on with!!!! :D ), I'll just say that did you know Jim Reid of The JAMC has started up a new band with fellow Mary Chainers Ben Lurie and Nick Sanderson (together with a new female member) called Freeheat? They've already had a single released not too far back. But as yet I ain't heard any of their stuff.... have you??? ;)

Originally posted by janaki ...which makes me wonder if they ever toured here after Phil King went and joined them on bass...? would've been very strange to see him onstage with them...

I saw the Valentines...

...cue up Queen's "We Are The Champions"...

And a week later I saw Lush at the very same club. (Suffice to say that life has gone downhill since that time.)

And I thought Phil King had just joined Lush on bass. I am thinking of the correct fellow?

Yes.

indeed, get on with the trivia...sorry to sidetrack you so!

but as for Freeheat...was just reading about this yesterday, as a matter of fact! and no, i've not heard anything of theirs yet...will have to definitely keep an ear out! :D

and Gnu, you were DAMN lucky. *envies* memories of either show you'd like to share...?

Phil King was indeed Lush's bassist for awhile, but after Lush disbanded, he went on tour with the Jesus and Mary Chain for awhile. dunno if he did any recordings with them, though. i didn't get anything past Honey's Dead-era.

No, he didn't actually - the Mary Chain demise was indeed a messy affair - but people ceased caring by that point. Their final album "Munki" is actually quite good in an underrated ignored sort of way. Ironically their last ever record was also their first ever album for Creation Records - isn't that bizarre?

Freeheat's only release to date is a five track EP called "Retox". That's about as much as I know at the moment!! ;)

What do you think of William Reid's stuff as Lazycame?

haven't heard Lazycame either, actually! yet more stuff to look for and listen to... ;)

yeah, i really did stop caring after a point. i think a lot of it had to do with really hating Stoned and Dethroned. my sister bought it. and the Hope Sandoval factor ruined things for me, too. :nonono: in fact, i'm not entirely sure what happened towards the end. some fan i am, eh?

think i'll have to dig up my Mary Chain records next...Psychocandy, Automatic...here we come... :D

(till Big Good Angel gets here, of course! which should be at the beginning of next week... :jump: )

There's nothing wrong with "Stoned and Dethroned"!!! I like it! It's another side to the Mary Chain sound, more laid back, that's all!!... and Hope Sandoval's old band Mazzy Star were responsible for some of my all time fave "swooning" songs - like "Fade Into You" , "Blue Light", the whole of the "She Hangs Brightly" album, etc etc.... ;)

I take it you're not a Mazzy Star admirer then??

I'm about to start getting on with making a new CD compilation of Moonshake stuff any day now - it's based on collecting all their early EP tracks and some LP tracks together under the overall title "Too Many Crooks" and I'm going to remix a few of the tracks as well as they're too short!! More later! ;)

 Gnu, you've got far too much free time on your hands. and i have far too many letters in my name...24, last i checked!

Marty...perhaps i'll give it another try. at the time, though...i really didn't care much for S&D. who knows, though...timing's always more crucial than i might like to give it credit for! ;)

as for Mazzy Star...no, never really was a fan. i think it had to do with massive overexposure on that front here, as well...it seemed for awhile like you couldn't go ANYWHERE without hearing "Fade Into You," and it just got to be extremely annoying after awhile. my sister was very into them, and i know she'd played She Hangs Brightly around me at least a few times, but i can't say that it made a very big impression on me. something about Hope's voice i don't particularly care for. (which is rather odd if you think about it, cos there's plenty of people whose voices i don't have problems with that many would find annoying. )

Moonshake's another band where i really do need to go and get the things i missed out on the first time around. all i have is Eva Luna. must remedy this situation. :D

and out of curiosity...have you heard any Sing-Sing? and if so, what do you think...? :)

Hope Sandoval. Now there is a dark lush indeed   I happen to like that smoky husky voice of hers a lot actually. Does things to me, you know?

By the way, just intrigued, but who's this Moonshake band that gets mentioned every so often here ....what are they like? Where do they come from?? Are they like the Valentines or Husker Du or what? Any answers?

:cool2: :cool2:

Props to David Roback of Mazzy Star for his talent. About the only thing the Rain Parade needed was a better singer, and Hope is an improvement over what they had.
