i'm not sure if this has been discussed before (we really need a search engine for this forum, i can't remember all the past posts, so don't rake me over the coals if this has been discussed...) but who likes revenge's debut "one true passion"? i picked it up in the cassettte discount bin (along with the salvation soundtrack. it's a shame i couldn't get both of them on cd...) for a dollar. and i really love it. it's a really good record if anyone gets a chance to hear it. aside from the ugly artwork and photography (judging by its cover, you'd assume revenge was a heavy metal act:\puke: ) and the cheesy lyrical references to all things masculine :uhoh: and the awful song titles:dead:, it's a real good pop record :nod: . i don't really understand why people slag off this side project (well maybe it's because i've haven't heard gun world porn...)

anyways, who has this record and what do you think of it?

I bought this record in 1990 when it was released and i still really do like it!!! Some brilliant songs (Kiss The Chrome, Fag Hag) and a rough and comfy production !!!

I haven't played it for eons, but I don't remember it being that bad. The singles were all pretty good, but from memory the last track, It's Quiet, was favorite.

Haven't listened to this since about 6 months after it came out (1990/91?). But seem to remember it was a bit 'messy' and over-elaborate in places. Think Revenge did the slow and soulful songs very well, but when they tried to speed things up a bit they just got confused.

Must revisit this ... if I ever invest in a record player again.

Had the single. "Pineapple Face" I think it was called. Never got round to getting the album although I did see Revenge in King Tuts sometime in 90/91.My first ever NO related gig. It was rammed as I recall but I was very pissed so my recollections kind of end there. Monaco at The Garage on the other hand in '97 was stone dead. Lucky if there was over 100 punters. Understandably it wasn't much of a gig.

Anybody at the Electronic Barrowlands gig in '91? Smiths t-shirts everywhere! Again a pretty duff show although I was quite amused by the "Let's All Have A Barney" chant that went up just before they came on!

Yeah, I went to Electronic at the Barras in 91. Indeed, more Smiths t-shirts than Order ones. And I was a mug who went along in a t-shirt too (though not band related) and it was fcuking -6 degrees in Glasgee that night! Froze me cods off!!

Didn't think it was a bad gig though I was a bit put-out that the tickets read "Electronic don't used tapes" yet you could clearly hear Neil Tennant's vocal on the PSB-related numbers (for the record, he wasn't there!).

Good weekend though cos ACR had played King Tut's just a couple of days before.

Yeah, it was a rainy Monday night in December and I had an end of term "Classical Sociological Theory" exam to sit at half nine the next morning. Possibly why my memories of the show are pretty negative!

"One True Passion" really ain't bad at all: I seem to remember NME gave it 8/10. First and last tracks were best, though nowt was as good as "7 Reasons" which, if it was on "Technique", would be considered a classic.

On the topic of Hooky singing, does anyone know WHY he sings "Dreams Never End", and did the Hookster write the lyrics on this one??

I bought One True Passion on CD when it came out, and remember cringing when listening to it for the most part. That said, there are two songs on there that just get me every time (and still do, as I'm listening again as I type), namely Big Bang and It's Quiet, which resemble Leave me alone and Run Wild respectively upon re-listening. A question here about 7 reasons - is that Mark E Smith saying the "sounds so nice-uh!" bit near the end, or Hooky taking the piss? CTB :cool:

Agreed. Big Bang and It's Quiet (both sh*te song titles, IMHO) were the standout tracks. Seems our Viking Rock God only really excelled himself on the slower stuff with Revenge.

What was the b-side slowie they did? Was it called Amsterdam, and wasn't it a cover version? That was another cracking track.

amsterdam is definitely one of their b-sides - is it a lou reed or leonard cohen track? can't think now. looks like we'll all be digging our revenge stuff out tonight!

Would love to dig it all out ... but I haven't had a record player for 8/9 years!

Do have the Deadbeat thingy on CD though - that'll have to do. The one that starts quiet then kicks in dead hard is another cracker.

The "Gun World Porn"-EP is pretty cool and this Remix of "Deadbeat" from David Bianco (or what's his name?) is brilliant !!!

Yeah good album at the time. Went to see them 3 times, Subterania, Venue and Powerhaus all in London in 91. Me and a mate met Hooky & Pottsy at two of these gigs backstage (after we made such a fucking noise at Subterania) at Venue and Powerhaus and drank their beer. Nice people, good laugh, great night.

I must admit the CD singles were better including that Gun World porn one. Best song, Jesus Loves You. (If thats what it was called remembering rightly)

I own just TWO Revenge singles - both on 7" - "Pineapple Face"/"14K" and "(I'm Not Your) Slave"/"Amsterdam". Both bought in 1990 for a quid each from Vinyl Exchange, Manchester. (The parent LP was going cheap there too - under £4.)

Prefer "Slave" as it's the stronger of the two. "Pineapple" just seemed so aimless to me... never got their earlier "7 Reasons" EP either. Ditto "Gun World Porn" or the album "One True Passion" so can't really say much about them - except having "The Trouble With Girls" on that exclusive "SELECT" Factory cassette...(which is a reworked version of "Big Bang" as I understand it.)

But like Jarvo says - the titles are crap. I mean: "Gun World Porn"? "Fag Hag"?? "Surf Nazi"???? "Pineapple Face"???????!!!!!

Close - I think Amsterdam was written by John Cale. It was pretty good too, much better than Slave IMHO CTB :cool:

i really loved the album at the time and went to see em 3 or 4 times. I listened to the album a few months ago and think its bitty. agree with eveyone else tho that 'big bang' and 'it's quiet' are still great tracks.

i still listen to the 'gun world porn' ep. all great tracks. and really enjoy monaco too.

Revenge is much better than Monaco, less cheesy, edgier, rougher, better songs.

"14K" (the b-side of Pineapple Face) is brilliant !!!

I quite enjoyed One True Passion, but GWP just didn't do anything for me...I picked up Music for Pleasure, by Monaco..and that one didn't really do a whole lot for me either...

I didn't like Revenge nearly as much as I liked Electronic, but at least I got to see Hooky and the gang in concert...never had the "pleasure" of attending a gig by Barney and Mr. Guitar God...

I wasn't too impressed by revenge. Each album had two good songs and they seemed like NO ripoffs anyway with the worst lyrics ever... However, I was impressed by the Monaco album. It seemed as if Hooky had found a sound similar to NO but with his own thing going on. And I can almost listen to the whole thing!! And WDYWFM is as catchy as anything NO has done, though Hooky's lyric writing could use some work.

hooky's lyrics aren't that bad...besides i don't think that he'd written anything truly embarassing, but he really needs to work on those song titles! if i never heard of new order or peter hook, there's no way i would ever even try to listen to a song entitled fag hag or sweet lips.

I liked it when it first came out, but now a days I find it quit hard to listen to. As Electronic I listen to at least once a week.
