Is Age Of Consent great or overrated?

Why it might be great:

-One of the first records that Barney starts climbing out of Ian's shadow and forming an identity and style of his own.

-Catchy as hell bassline

-Very cool guitar solo

-Great first song for an album, and it embodies the spirit of New Order for the first time on a full length album. It is the sound of New Order finally moving on!

-First true example of the band having a sense of humor

Why it might be overrated:

-Extremely redundant....same repetitive beat over and over

-Not a whole lot going on in the song, musically or lyrically

-Synth part sounds a little dated

-Seems a bit too long

-Not nearly as brilliant or groundbreaking as Everything's Gone Green, Temptation, or Blue Monday

FYI, AOC has some pretty complex harmony, try dumping all the tracks of a MIDI file of it into the key editor of cubase and watch the chords display!!! Hooky's bass is playing tensions to the chords most of the time rather than playing tonally.

When they started playing the song live in August 82 it was some way from being the finished article, went on for about 7 mins, and basically consisted of the same bass riff but whole 90 second cycles, Bernard would make up some words every 90 seconds or thereabouts. It wasn't great, to be honest, it was messy and repetitive. Might have made a decent Fall song at that stage.

But they listened to the tapes from the gigs and rehearsals, and whipped it into shape in the studio, to come up with the first song that really shows the way forward. Sure, EGG and Temptation/Hurt had been electronic, but this was the first time really that New Order had chosen to publicly display their new-found confidence. The vocals were up-front for once, plaintive but distinguishable, the instruments were separated rather than mixed in a dense fog, and there was a looseness to the whole thing that culminated in another whoop!

By now the song was a fast rocker in the live arena, much faster than on record, and was starting to become a crowd favourite, a status it retained throughout its live history.

In terms of what the song actually said to the listener when they first slapped PC&L on the turntable, it was quickly established as an all-time great. This was the new New Order, a band whose burgeoning confidence in the live setting was now evident on record too. Age of Consent's mix was unthinkable only 18 months before, can you imagine something like that on Movement? The title is also something of a clue, it was their coming of age on record.

Great or over-rated? 100% great.

Age Of Consent's utter brilliance is not questionable in the slightest.

As for dated, you probably couldnt pick a worse track - sounds as fresh now as (I assume) it did over 20 years ago.

Its a true favourite of mine and a tune I never tire of listening too. Id say its great and UNDER-RATED and would have been great as a single if the band/Factory were that way inclined.

It's pure Krautrock Motorik, intended to build tension throughout the song instead of bashing all around the drumkit just to show one's chops, for that you should listen to every British prog rock drummer (except Bruford). And even some of those guys would struggle to keep up the 16th note beat that Steve maintains for five minutes straight.

Sounds like a prime Brian Eno synth part - for me that's "not dated at all".

The fact is, every single time, MLANH makes a completely stupid suggestion, presumably an attempt to provoke discussion. It fails miserably and usually makes him come across as a twat. He solely starts threads, never contributes to any others, and still has the most ridiculous name on this board.

Age of consent is one of NO's most underated songs. Its Brilliant!!! should have been released as a single.

The REAL question is (see what I did there folks?) is not one of whether AoC is any cop, but has the posting of a thread querying one of the band's great songs caused you to lose any respect for the band?

I've gotten love from this board as well as criticism. It just seems that the people who criticize are the few who are the most vocal. To those who actually contributed to this thread with their opinion and kept it professional and not personal, I thank you for that (that includes you Tim, I enjoyed your response a lot). Great and timeless

One of their few songs that could wake the dead. Never overrated and sorely missed on the live set.

To be fair some of the abuse MLANH gets is over the top (even if his rubbish threads do invite it)

I just listened to PC&L from beginning to end for the first time in ages. I can confirm Age of Consent is the best opening track to a New Order album.

In my most humble opinion, AOC is so great that I listen to it every day, when I get off of work. It actually brings a smile to my face every time I hear it. I get a good laugh out of it [particularly the lyrics!], and I can sing along to it and just have a ball. I love that song!
