New Order venues that are no more...

The Hacienda.

Edinburgh Calais Palais (converted * extended into a big club) My first New Order gig (Feb '85).

Coasters - Edinburgh. Not sure what's there now.

Jenkinsons Bar, Brighton. (Now offices, I think)

Mayfair Suite, Southampton. (Got levelled in the early 90's)

To bad about Hammersmith Palais..I only went there once for School Disco (don't laugh as it was my mate's birthday choice) but my dad said he used to go there for "dances" back in the 60s!

Newcastle Mayfair - now a small mall/leisure complex of staggeringly hellish proportions. Some of Newcastle's worst boozers are situated in this fucking excuse for entertainment.

A lucky escape, especially as I lived in Brixton at the time.

The State Balroom, as featured in Letter To Breznev currently lies empty. Think it was the 1st club in Liverpool to play Acid House, at least to have an Acid night anyway.

I've never accurately been able to locate the position of the Beach club.

Walthamstow Assembly Hall still exists but is mroe likely to host melas rather than gigs but does anyone know where Walthamstow Youth Club was situated? (Site of two JD gigs).

You've gotta miss Gretton and his love of quirky 'non-venues'.

Not quite. Think Mike Knowler & John Kelly had played (monday!) nights at Quadrant Park before they went the State (the 'acid' night you refer to was called Underground).

We did this last year, at the time of the hurricanes in the States. JT's response was "New Orleans"

State was riddled with gangs in mid 90's. a horrible atmosphere in there. gary's on tap in there. remember that shooting vid on the CCTV. when the bouncer got shot.

There was a reunion in Crocky last year. I heard it was a big hit. Not likely to catch me in a club anymore. The old venue is currently a recycling centre.

We used to go mid to end of '85. I thought it was alright. Don't recall it being a tenner although later on it may have been.

Also in Toronto:

CNE Grandstand/Exhibition Stadium where they played in 89 was demolished a few years ago

Kingswood Music Theatre at Canada's Wonderland where they played in 93 is still there but not used for concerts anymore

other places they played in edinburgh was the assembly rooms which is still there but doesn't get used for gigs anymore

Hurrah's, The Ritz and Peppermint Lounge are all gone.

As well, the Ukranian House is still standing but I'm fairly certain they no longer put on concerts there any more.

As Tim has already said, it was at Oozits, Newgate Street, Shude Hill. Whether there is anything still there (or whether it's part of the Arndale centre - I'm pretty sure it was demolished?), I'm not sure - never really bothered to try and find out, although I might do if I'm bored treking round Manc again! :)

Ayr(1983) - The Orient. was converted to a nightclub. now almost derelict...

In San Francisco, the I-Beam, which NO played in in 1981 and 1983, and Revenge in 1990. Echo Beach is gone too.

The 'Cinema Club' (Market St. Cinema) still exists, but not as a venue for live music, but instead as a strip club. My father knows the person who owns it.

Only the NEC left of the Brum venues either band played. :(

Agreed,fuckin girls gaff.... What a great venue it used to be...Saw Monaco play there,did'nt even know the were on,so you can imagine how I buzzed,with 1 1/2 of those quality 90's E in me... supporting The Charlatans.Top night

It's the 'New Wine Church' and the building itself is called Gateway House. The outside of the building's been restored quite sympathetically but unfortunately it's neither used for films (I think I saw the Jungle Book there when I was a kid) nor for live bands (unless they're part of the aforementioned happy clappy lot)...

Mark, your right, the Osbourne club did become the Pleasuredome, top venue for old school raves it was, remember seeing the spinmasters, Stu allen etc... there

Attended 2 of the above gigs...Hammersmith & Woolwich both in December 85' if i'm correct those were the days.

deeside leuisure ice rink were the order played futurama in 82 burnt down.

erm...Lisa...check your memory banks...the order only played Dallas once in 89, and it wasn't at Bronco Bowl...they only did Starplex that year...

and if I'm not mistaken...that was the first time they did Dallas...

Errrr, yes, they did play the Bronco Bowl, with a band from Athens, Georgia called Love Tractor opening. Starplex didn't exist in 1989. If I can find my ticket stub, I'll prove it to you. I even bought the t-shirt, which I still have.... I saw that listing in the True Faith book and knew it was wrong.....

SFX Hall in Dublin(Jan'86) was recently demolished,which was a real shame as i have so many great memories of the place.

Starplex was opened in 88...and the order did play there in 89..April 20 something or other...the day after they played Astroworld in Houston...I was at both shows...Throwing Muses opened for them...this is the tour that gave us the wonderful flourescent day-glo American flag shirts...

They played there 3 times - twice in '86 & once in '83 the 2 '86 gigs were great - my first NO gigs!

And, for the record, nobody goes by that True Faith book, it's a load of carp. The gigography here is based on the old Water Rat one, which hasn't been updated for many years. Sam Habash does a fantastic job in keeping everything up to date and fresh at http://www.new-order.net, the only resource worth checking for gig details.

The I Beam is now a clothing boutique, you'd never know there was a club there..

So what's the oldest venue that they played that's still going as a music place? Maxwells in Hoboken? Blackpool Scamps is going as Flares now I think

It's a damned shame about the Hammersmith Palais. On hearing the news I thought "I bet no-one is going to write a song featuring the name of whatever office block is going to be on the site" as well as "And neither is anyone going to come away from said anonymous block thinking "Fuck, that was a top night!" either!

To say the place has/had an interesting history is to understate it somewhat. It opened as a dancehall in the twenties so people have done the Charleston, the Black Bottom, the jitterbug, the mashed potato, the twist, they've skanked, pogoed, break-danced, moshed etc there for nigh-on eighty years! Untold thousands have shagged, married, conceived etc after meeting there and Strummer immortalised it in song. Both Kraftwerk and the Order have played there.

Infamous venues no longer around: The Order played Tolworth Recreation Centre near me in 83 (EGG from it is on Retro's live disc). They no longer have gigs there as far as I know. It's also the gig where the proceedings were interupted by a bloke asking someone to move their moped or something! He concluded by saying "Please don't spit on me!". Ah, the eighties...

Up the A3 from there used to be The Toby Jug public house. Bowie played one of his warm-up gigs here for the Ziggy Stardust tour. It was demolished a couple of years ago.

A classic night, and for many years one of the best recordings available.

For those who don't know the story, the author of the "An Ideal For Living" book Mark Johnson was compiling the book in 1982-early 1983, and had taken to following the band around. Literally. He'd walk into the dressing room as if it were his, would interrupt private conversations, and had started to seriously piss everyone off to the extent that he was about to get banned from having anything to do with the band. Then, he went and bought himself a scooter, registration SMG643Y, with the advance money from the book. This didn't go down too well with the band, and when he unveiled this scooter before the Tolworth gig, they decided that he would become the target for one of their legendary japes. The band's crew winched the scooter up on the tailgate of one of the lorries, and got one of the Kingston Poly students to interrupt the gig to announce that a scooter "registration SMG643Y" was causing an obstruction. Johnson went outside to find the scooter stuck several feet off the ground on the tailgate of the lorry, and there was nothing he could do about it! I understand he was also excluded from the rest of the gig as well ;)

That's what I call a story!

Mr Johnson must have had the hide of a rhino to behave as he did. One would think it a good idea to get the full co-operation and participation of the band before you begin to do what you have to in order to get the research/experience sorted! I take it he left the gig after the infamous PA announcement and they wouldn't let him back in afterwards? :)

As you say, the boot of it - which I've committed to CD now - is a belter and it's probably notable in that it features one of the few times an Order gig has been interupted by such an announcement. Now I know the story behind it! Cheers.
