New Order venues that are no more...

The 'Cinema Club' (Market St. Cinema) still exists, but not as a venue for live music, but instead as a strip club. My father knows the person who owns it.

The I Beam is now a clothing boutique, you'd never know there was a club there..

So what's the oldest venue that they played that's still going as a music place? Maxwells in Hoboken? Blackpool Scamps is going as Flares now I think

It's a damned shame about the Hammersmith Palais. On hearing the news I thought "I bet no-one is going to write a song featuring the name of whatever office block is going to be on the site" as well as "And neither is anyone going to come away from said anonymous block thinking "Fuck, that was a top night!" either!

To say the place has/had an interesting history is to understate it somewhat. It opened as a dancehall in the twenties so people have done the Charleston, the Black Bottom, the jitterbug, the mashed potato, the twist, they've skanked, pogoed, break-danced, moshed etc there for nigh-on eighty years! Untold thousands have shagged, married, conceived etc after meeting there and Strummer immortalised it in song. Both Kraftwerk and the Order have played there.

Infamous venues no longer around: The Order played Tolworth Recreation Centre near me in 83 (EGG from it is on Retro's live disc). They no longer have gigs there as far as I know. It's also the gig where the proceedings were interupted by a bloke asking someone to move their moped or something! He concluded by saying "Please don't spit on me!". Ah, the eighties...

Up the A3 from there used to be The Toby Jug public house. Bowie played one of his warm-up gigs here for the Ziggy Stardust tour. It was demolished a couple of years ago.

A classic night, and for many years one of the best recordings available.

For those who don't know the story, the author of the "An Ideal For Living" book Mark Johnson was compiling the book in 1982-early 1983, and had taken to following the band around. Literally. He'd walk into the dressing room as if it were his, would interrupt private conversations, and had started to seriously piss everyone off to the extent that he was about to get banned from having anything to do with the band. Then, he went and bought himself a scooter, registration SMG643Y, with the advance money from the book. This didn't go down too well with the band, and when he unveiled this scooter before the Tolworth gig, they decided that he would become the target for one of their legendary japes. The band's crew winched the scooter up on the tailgate of one of the lorries, and got one of the Kingston Poly students to interrupt the gig to announce that a scooter "registration SMG643Y" was causing an obstruction. Johnson went outside to find the scooter stuck several feet off the ground on the tailgate of the lorry, and there was nothing he could do about it! I understand he was also excluded from the rest of the gig as well ;)

That's what I call a story!

Mr Johnson must have had the hide of a rhino to behave as he did. One would think it a good idea to get the full co-operation and participation of the band before you begin to do what you have to in order to get the research/experience sorted! I take it he left the gig after the infamous PA announcement and they wouldn't let him back in afterwards? :)

As you say, the boot of it - which I've committed to CD now - is a belter and it's probably notable in that it features one of the few times an Order gig has been interupted by such an announcement. Now I know the story behind it! Cheers.
