Not sure if we've done this one before..

Just read last night that Hammersmith Palais is on its way out to be turned into offices.

Quality quote from one pundit saying that the developers "know the price of everything, but the value of nothing" and that lots of people would use the Palais as a point of reference in their lives; remember bands they saw there, or a bird they snogged there, etc, etc.. Still, money talks I guess.

I know there's loads of venues which have since disappeared. The Kilburn National is now a happy clappy church. As is the Woolwich Coronet. Revenge played the Powerhaus in Islington, which then became a bar, and is now, I think, a bank.

Can anyone think of any more venues New Order played that don't exist anymore?!

Edinburgh Calais Palais (converted * extended into a big club) My first New Order gig (Feb '85).

Coasters - Edinburgh. Not sure what's there now.

Jenkinsons Bar, Brighton. (Now offices, I think)

To bad about Hammersmith Palais..I only went there once for School Disco (don't laugh as it was my mate's birthday choice) but my dad said he used to go there for "dances" back in the 60s!

Newcastle Mayfair - now a small mall/leisure complex of staggeringly hellish proportions. Some of Newcastle's worst boozers are situated in this fucking excuse for entertainment.

The State Balroom, as featured in Letter To Breznev currently lies empty. Think it was the 1st club in Liverpool to play Acid House, at least to have an Acid night anyway.

I've never accurately been able to locate the position of the Beach club.

Walthamstow Assembly Hall still exists but is mroe likely to host melas rather than gigs but does anyone know where Walthamstow Youth Club was situated? (Site of two JD gigs).

You've gotta miss Gretton and his love of quirky 'non-venues'.

Not quite. Think Mike Knowler & John Kelly had played (monday!) nights at Quadrant Park before they went the State (the 'acid' night you refer to was called Underground).

State was riddled with gangs in mid 90's. a horrible atmosphere in there. gary's on tap in there. remember that shooting vid on the CCTV. when the bouncer got shot.

There was a reunion in Crocky last year. I heard it was a big hit. Not likely to catch me in a club anymore. The old venue is currently a recycling centre.

We used to go mid to end of '85. I thought it was alright. Don't recall it being a tenner although later on it may have been. :shrug:

Quick list off the top of my head...

Houston has lost Astroworld...

Austin has lost City Coliseum and Nightlife....

New Orleans may eventually lose Saenger Theatre...it was flooded by Hurricane Katrina, and the powers that be still haven't decided if they are going to repair the place or not...

Also in Toronto:

CNE Grandstand/Exhibition Stadium where they played in 89 was demolished a few years ago

Kingswood Music Theatre at Canada's Wonderland where they played in 93 is still there but not used for concerts anymore

other places they played in edinburgh was the assembly rooms which is still there but doesn't get used for gigs anymore

and the playhouse which only seems to have either daniel o donnell or chitty chitty bang bang these days

Forgot about the shoe! So much for slip-ons in those days! :uhoh:

Nah, venue is still open and still exactly the same, just the name has changed: The Forum. Walk past it most days.

Big pub opposite though (the Tally Ho) boarded up its windows about a year back and was demolished over Xmas. Big plot of land though, will doubtless have a billion flats built on it!

In New York:

Hurrah's, The Ritz and Peppermint Lounge are all gone.

As well, the Ukranian House is still standing but I'm fairly certain they no longer put on concerts there any more.

As Tim has already said, it was at Oozits, Newgate Street, Shude Hill. Whether there is anything still there (or whether it's part of the Arndale centre - I'm pretty sure it was demolished?), I'm not sure - never really bothered to try and find out, although I might do if I'm bored treking round Manc again! :)

In San Francisco, the I-Beam, which NO played in in 1981 and 1983, and Revenge in 1990. Echo Beach is gone too.

The 'Cinema Club' (Market St. Cinema) still exists, but not as a venue for live music, but instead as a strip club. My father knows the person who owns it.
