aspiring musicians anyone?

there's been many posts where people are asking about no/joy division tabs and there's never been much of a response to them. so i'm wondering, how many of you guys play an instrument (preferably bass, guitar and piano) and as a hobby (being a musical talent you are) play no/jd songs by ear (cuz i don't think there's no/jd sheet music readily available. but i would love to see some cuz it's really cool to see the nuts and bolts of the music. like what's their favourite key and how all the parts of the song comes together)

i play a bit of guitar and i'm currently learning how to play new dawn fades (i think that's the title, i don't pay much attention to titles. track 15 on jd's still) by ear.

I would love to get the fingering for bagpipes for any NO/JD music. That would impress the neighbours

i play drums currently rehursing in warsaw cover band for a one off

i play guitar, bass, synth, drum machine, crappy percussion, and a strange box with dials that makes odd noises. i suck at guitar, but i can play most division songs. i've found that much of the guitar-based material on joy division albums uses the key of e, which is the lowest string. the more bass driven stuff is usually in the key of d, the third lowest string. everything that barney plays is very easy (EXCEPT for new dawn fades, which i always screw up) but it is difficult to hear exactly what he is doing on recordings. i like ian's guitar style as well, which is to play one chord over and over again.

I play in a band that has just started up. We're playing Joy Division/New Order/Wire covers to fill in the time while we write originals ... There are afew Joy Division guitar tab pages on the net ... Can't remember the URLS but they aren't to hard to find ...

The guitar parts for JD/NO aren't really hard to play ... I find it more fun to work them out myself to rather than reading the tab ...

i play bass.. alot of JD/NO stuff is fairly simple but theres a fine line between playing it and it sounding ok and making it sound brilliant.. and that can be difficult!

I play bass, lead and/or rhythm guitar, drums (though would never claim to be a drummer), keyboards and do vocals. Not always all at the same time mind. There aren't really any good JD tabs knocking about on the net - suffice to say that just about every JD song involves Barre chords, and all the solos/riffs are realy easy to play. There's a fair amount of NO stuff tabbed out on the net, though not all of it is accurate by any means. I just play everything by ear rather than writing tabs down.

Do you think that Yngwie Malmsteen could handle Gillians guitar parts if he joined New Order ? I don't know if he could ...

Well, I'm not what you would call an "ackump-lishd mew-zishun" by any means but I do play pretty (creatively) mean drums, most sorts of percussion - including tuned - and dustbins and plastic water dispensing bottles.... (obviously I prefer to hit things cos if I didn't I'd probably end up hitting lots of people instead).......plus a dabbler (note cruciality of this term) on keyboards, accordian, melodica, synth, sound generators, samplers..... Never practised piano good enough to play properly but cannot read music anyway - so the few tunes I DO know how to play are all played by ear (I can pick out chords this way pretty well).

Likewise I cannot play guitar but am sort of capable of playing simple things like, say, Pixies / Kim Deal bass lines (or even Hooky ones) in a one-note-at-a-time capacity..... However, I'm a dab hand at playing ALL instruments and creating Krautrock-esque symphonies, by virtue of the fact than I'm a devil when it comes to one-chord guitar mantras and such like. But yeah - I wish I COULD play guitar - only problem is, my short attention span means it's impossible for me to even be devoted enough to put aside endless hours every day practising properly and learning how to figure it all out.....my own loss I guess.... :(

I'm also pretty adroit at just making "computer-generated noise" for example....working with loops, samples and found noises or simply beats/sounds nicked off other records......it's just it takes me absolutely ages to play the instruments "virtually" and then sequence every thing together to produce something resembling a piece of music.....

I can play a few NewOrder tunes on the piano. Regret, Subculture, and I do a pretty mean Love Vigilantes. I can do Decades as well. Oh, and I like to play along with some parts of Get Ready stuff, like Crystal and Vicious Streak.

i've done some badass symphonies with radio static, vacuum cleaners, electric hedge trimmers pieces of metal, film dialogue, and various tapes and field recordings of things like chainsaws outside my window o0r beetoven or flock of seagulls or a ring modulator that made a funny noise one day. my best one contains primitive "samples" from the movie i spit on your grave, and you can clearly hear the line "he only comes when he jerks off."

I have played with a few bands in the past on guitar (agree with Brendan about JD/NO guitar bits being easy to work out), but lately I have been doing stuff on my own, using my ever-expanding collection of shit guitars, the LadyBears bass, and my new MIDI keyboard and sequencer software like FruityLoops and Cubase. Not that good at any of the electronic stuff yet ( I hate reading manuals!!!), but happy to string a few bum notes together on guitar when the opportunity arrives. CTB

I can't play any sort of musical instrument! I have no talent in the music department, and I can't carry a tune if my life depended on singing a song! I wish I could sing though, cuz I would love to make my own music. Envious of those who can be musicians!:\ohwell:

hardest jd/no song to play anyone? i may be really stupid in music, but i find transmission a little tricky to figure out. maybe it's because i hate doing all those bends and slides that are required. hey jason, what are the chords to crystal and vicious streak? those would be fun to know too.

I play bass guitar and a little bit of guitar+synths too. Actually any instrument goes as long as it makes funny noises...

When I was starting playing about five-six years ago it was the Joy Division songs that really made me open my eyes about how rock music should be played. The basslines were so simple but still so melodic and effective... Love the Transmission's two-note bass riff! Still it grooves like a moose.

About Bernard's guitar work... Seems that on most songs he is relying on the good old e-minor pentatonic scale. (except the ones where the guitar sound is just rhythmic feedback noise..) I suck playing guitar, but I can figure out most of what Barney plays on early JD records just because the guitar riffs are mostly just generic rock'n'roll licks (but played with attitude!).

Managed to impress the newish lady in my life at the weekend by playing her note perfect keyboard versions of Decades and BLT (having already programmed the bass parts to be sequenced).

I tape myself playing bass when im wiped out, and play it back when im down again, and it always sounds great. (!)

Every guitar i've had(4 in total) has ended up being smashed in pure frustration.It's called being a lazy twat...you see I don't wanna spend hours on end strumming stupid chords. I wanna be able to play straight away (fuck all that practice lark)

hrrm. lessee. i allegedly sing/scream, play keyboard, and play guitar. have played bass before and enjoyed it, though not nearly enough to actually claim to play it. also spent much of my childhood playing odd renaissance instruments...started innocently enough with varying levels of recorder and moved on into sackbut (which i'm probably spelling wrong) and a few other wind instruments. am also enjoying playing a soprano melodica these days for a particular part in one of the songs my band does.

i can read music, though not on guitar...was lazy and didn't learn to do that properly. er...what else? i'd probably try playing just about anything once...enjoy messing around with things. till i get totally fed up and annoyed, that is. ;)

i haven't actually tried playing a lot of JD/NO songs, but if you break them down, most do seem to be not so difficult. *shrugs* things don't have to necessarily be difficult to be good, or to get any sort of emotional response. things just need to be well put together. :D

I can sing, took 8 years of piano lessons so I could prolly twitter my way through some keyboard-mashing. I can also read mooozick from piano lessons and various choir schtuffs. I've also been told that I have the drummer's fire, but I haven't the foggiest as to what that means or if it is relevant.

I would wub to be in a band. Of course, if I dropped out of law school, I think my parents would be v. upset with me. Teehee.

When my friend finally buys a bass in july we will be forming a band- Transmission WILL be done, with me on guitar and vox. And we can DAAAAANCE! Crstals piss easy- chords are Am, but going 0-1-0-1 on the b string, then C, then D. actually dunno 'bout the chorus.

Oh yeah, apparently Barney's guitar is detuned one step, ie D G# C# F# C D. But you don't have to do that if you can't be arsed to mess about. Drop D tuning's bad enough...

Spot on about the chords for Crystal dead fookin easy.However, if your detuning your guitar by one step, the top and bottom strings should be D#, not D. Also the second bottom should be A#. Or, if you have a DVD player with Karaoke function (and why wouldn't you ), it allows you to modify the pitch of the disc you're playing without having to re-tune the axe. CTB

i may be really bad with music theory, but how can one tune one step down or up and know they're tuning it right with out a tuner? besides, what's the point with the wacky tunning (sonic youth is a criminal in this...)? what's wrong with the conventional tunning? or just change the key.
