Sirens has been back on my record player for the last 3 or 4 weeks.
For a quick bath and shave, numbers 2,10,11,3,4 & 1 are programmed on a continuos loop (at a volume which constantly gets the missus annoyed)
For the not so familiar....Road To Ruin, Turn, Working Overtime, WFTSC, Krafty & Who's Joe.
Turn is definitely in my Top 10 New Order tracks, next favourite is Road To Ruin.....fucking magic ![]()

Quick?? What happens when you're preening Shug?
Good luck for tomorrow ![]()
It's just two songs for me now - Turn and Jetstream.
Every now and again one of my mates listens to it for the first time in my car and really likes it.
I think I wore it out. Face it, it's no Technique, eh?
But Turn and Jet will be with me forever, I think.
It's only one more day...
Who's Joe, HNWYD, WFTSC, GIAUE and Turn are on the iPod, nothing else ever gets played these days.
Still can't understand why Krafty isn't getting more love... Classic NO POP song, latest in a long line of storming 'comeback' singles (well Regret & Crystal)... WFTSC & Turn make up my holy trinity from the album, all definitely strong enough to get into a Best Of... playlist for me...

Bit of Face Up in there too, with Hooky vamping on essentially one note for the verse.
I've had Sirens in the car for months now. Only 7 minutes to work though, so I get about one full track there and one back. Always skip number 5 ![]()

couldnae said it better meself. WFTSC and Turn are pretty much the bomb diggity, but Krafty is another monster all by itself.
Krafty is a lot like EGG...they both sound GREAT turned up loud!
Peace out!
Krafty rules
Turn and WFTSC are marvelous...The rest are how can I describe them? hmmm,er..shite.
But that does'nt matter much and those 3 more than make up for it ![]()
I think they fucked up the running order on it. I'd have dropped Draculas Castle (used it as a b.side), and seeing as Jetstream was a hit released that as the first single followed by the title track with Krafty or GIAUE as the third one.
I know most on here wanted Turn as a single but i think what makes Technique,Lowlife & PCL such good albums is the fact that they have good non single tracks on them.
IMHO
Who's Joe? - The bass in the chorus makes it a classic
Hey Now What You Doing - Good sound, shite lyrics
Waiting For The Sirens' Call - Amazing music, weak lyrics and vocals
Krafty - Chorus is slightly weak but overall great. Drums identical to previous track!
I Told You So - Oh dear. Fucking horrific.
Morning Night And Day - I like it.
Dracula's Castle - Awful title, awful lyrics. Decent sound though.
Jetstream - Too cheesy. Kind of catchy though. Poor vocals.
Guilt Is A Useless Emotion - Half great, half shite.
Turn - Best song on here by a mile. It'd be perfect if it wasn't for "in the corner over there" 9.9/10
Working Overtime - Oops.

Yeah, I'm surprised about that too. "Krafty" has such a catchy melody that I can't believe people don't like it more. It was this song that brought me back to New order because before it, I haven't listened to New Order for 8 long years! I stumbled on it by accident and I immediately recognized the New Order sound. It really opened my ears. I'm also with you concerning "WFTSC" and "Turn", those 3 are among NO's best.
Big Black wrote: rafty is essentialy a rewrite of Regret, but it's still a corker.
I don't agree, for someone who had listened to both songs years apart, they don't sound similar at all. The first time I heard "Krafty", I recognized the New Order sound but it didn't remind me of any of their past songs.
It's alright.Got some quality,classic N.O.,some ok,some shite.
What's with this calling N.O. songs by their 'working titles'?! Are people just trying to be clever ( oooh, look at me,I know the working titles!!! ) or what? Hurt is not Cramp,Denial is not Little Dead,Your Silent Face is not KW-1.That is not what they're called.Stop it.NOW!!! Fookin' Road To Ruin......might improve the song title, the track is still poor.IMO

As for WFTSC, I recently picked up the gatefold vinyl the other week for the ol' collection. As a whole it's more accessible than Get Ready but lacks some of the oomph factor that album had (Crystal, Primitive Notion). Unlike GR there's no tracks on here I dislike... it's more 2/3rds of the album is excellent and the other 1/3 I feel indifferent about. There's some superb melodies on there that get well and truly lodged in your head; notably WFTSC itself.
At the moment I Told You So, Morning Night And Day and Turn get fairly regular spins on my iPod. The album also spawned some cracking remixes in the shape of Morel's Krafty, Richard X's Jetstream and Planet Funk's WFTSC ![]()

Bollocks. Bernard called "Denial" "Little Dead" almost every time he introduced it, including as late as 85, and was still calling "Hurt" "Cramp" in 1985.

That's the point. They've got the exclusive right to call their songs whatever they like. But once they're released into the public domain or whatever, the title is what it is,surely. When other people call them their working titles or fookin' pseudonyms, why? I just don't get it,it just smacks of smartarse-ness to me,or,like you said, bollocks.

Someone mentioned the running order. this is one of the problems of this album IMO. I would have made it up this way:
01 Who's Joe? 02 Waiting for the Sirens Call 03 Krafty 04 Morning Night and Day 05 Dracula's Castle
06 Hey Now What You Doing 07 I Told You So 08 Jetstream 09 Guilt 10 Turn
Working Overtime could be used as a b-side and I think Jetstream could have also been released as a non-album single, doesn't really connect to the rest of the songs and would have made it more special. and most songs are also too long, especially Dracula's Castle, Hey Now and WFTSC (single edit is much better).
overall I now think it's quite a good album but somehow it sounds "old", not as fresh as Get Ready. I think the new fans they undoubtely found with GR were disappointed by the more classic production of Waiting.
As late as '85! Wow! The last 22 years have zipped by.
We could go one step further and call then all "Untitled" or things like "I like that bit, play it again Arthur" - or would that cause too much Confusion do we think.

And I will always refer to Road To Ruin as Road To Ruin :D
I usually listen to "Who's Joe", "Hey now what you doing", "GIAUE", the Mac Quayle remix of "GIAUE", "Dracula's Castle", "Turn", "I told you so", and the Japanese version of "Krafty".

I love WFTSC. Its actually my second favorite New Order album, right behind Republic.
I like WFTSC because its a brilliant hybrid of the moody guitar sound New Order did on Get Ready combined with the catchy electonic melodies of Technique.
The album has some great songs on it.
My favorites
Who's Joe
I LOVE this song. Brilliant way to start the album. I love the atmospheric beginning, it sounds like an orchestra tunring up and going into the overture. Great atmospheric song and Barneys voice is lovely on it.
Waiting for the Sirens Call
Beautiful song with really good lyrics (for Barney, that is).
Krafty
This song is only OK. I think it was a weak first single and even though its catchy, it didnt blow me away. The awesome synth break that comes after the first chorus...its epic and should have been used more.
I Told You So
Awesome song. Its got lots of great rythms, melodies, and a lot of cool electronic stuff going on. Daft lyrics, but I love the songs melodies and atmospheres. This song is kind of sensual, in a way.
Morning Night and Day
Fucking awesome song! Great programmed bass line, great Hooky bassline, and catchy as Hell.
Jetstream
This is my favorite song on the whole album. Jetstream is a classic New Order Electro Pop dance song. I love how cathchy and uplifting the song is, and I love all of the little electronic melodies. Its also got some lovely Hooky basslines.
I think its a brilliant song, and had it been the first single, it would have done really well in America. I play JET all the time when I DJ at a nightclub, and the whole crowd loves JET everytime I play it. its a floor filler.
Guilt Is a Useless Emotion
This is a brilliant unshackled dance song. I love the songs meoldy, atmospherics, beats, and catchy Chorus. Yes, the lyrics are stupid. But this is a great dance song and it should bave been the first or second single from the album.
Turn
Beautiful song. :) What else is there to say?
I would love to see New Order work with an electronic producer for thier next album. Id love to hear them do an album with Arthur Baker. His remix of JET was awesome.

Beautiful song. :) What else is there to say?
I would love to see New Order work with an electronic producer for thier next album. Id love to hear them do an album with Arthur Baker. His remix of JET was awesome.

Beautiful song. :) What else is there to say?
I would love to see New Order work with an electronic producer for thier next album. Id love to hear them do an album with Arthur Baker. His remix of JET was awesome.

Just had a listen again after a long time. Who's Joe is still the stand out track for me, and was pretty good live too.
Still prefer Get Ready though, despite all the hit and misses. The highs are higher for me.

Oh man I am sorry about all of those posts. My computer was acting all fucked up and it didnt appear that my reply was posting. I am very sorry about that.
I do love WFTSC though.....
Also...
I think New Order must like WFTSC. They have played more tracks off of it in concert than any other album except for Technique.
They played 8 songs from WFTSC.
6 from Get Ready/
5 from Republic
8 from Technique
Uhh....I forget for the earlier albums.
anyways...
I LOVE JETSTREAM AND GIAUE!!

I don't like Jetstream at all; it's too poppy and doesn't sound New Order to me. It lacks an alternative touch which is the reason I like the band. I can imagine any pop singer sing this very mainstream sounding song.
As a whole, I'd rate this album about equal to Republic. My least liked album is Get Ready BTW.
Canuck21 wrote: As a whole, I'd rate this album about equal to Republic. My least liked album is Get Ready BTW.
WOW. I feel exactly the opposite. I love Get Ready & WFTSC as I think they are both in equal standing as the "Classic" NO sound.
Republic however comma to this day makes me cringe. So much so that I rarely...if ever...play it in public.
It just does NOT sound like ANY NO before or after (Thank god actually).
It's a shame really because so many of those songs had potential, but instead we got a throw away Electronic album. And not even a good one at that.
Dear New Order, I owe a great deal to your music, especially Low Life. It could be said that Low Life gave me strength to live at a difficult time. I bought waiting For the Sirens Call and tried hard to groove on it but couldn't. Seems the band lost it's edge. Please don't go down the path of the Rolling Stones. I think you could do better than Sirens Call. That is just my opinion.
Sincerely,
jon murphy:shrug:

A couple of weeks back I played Sirens about three times per day. It always is a good idea to rediscover a New Order album after a while. It could have done with a couple of songs less, but it is a cracking album. I rated it better than Get Ready. To me GR has too many songs that just seem unfinished.

Only difference is it's a UK copy with an import sticker on it.

Well said. I too am a Jetstream fan. I can do without the remixes (Except Art Baker's) and I think that Barney looks too much like William Shatner of late in the viddy but that won't stop me from diggin the tunage.
Peace!
I absolutely love WFTSC. It was my fave album of 2005 and I played the CD for months after it was released. Trying my best to not sound like a pious NME journalist they captured their classic electro/dance/indie/rock sound overall with WFTSC but did it with new ideas which made it an interesting addition to what they'd done before - not a copy of it. For me the highlights of WFTSC are
Who's Joe, WFTSC & Turn - Three great tracks which captures their indie rock style perfectly. They're a little reminiscent of Run and Regret but in a softer style with a wonderful synth led intro on Who's Joe and Hooky's basslines on all the tracks A+
Krafty - A fairly good track which ticks all the NO boxes in the terms of their dance meets indie rock style and the synth riff is one of NO's best!
Told You So - A lot of people hate this track but IMO it's a reasonably good slow tempo electro rock tune. However it could have been executed slightly better and the reggae style 'A'right' samples are a little naff.
Morning Night And Day - Classic NO and everything works well in this tune guitars, bass, synths etc. This should have been a single and when I first played WFTSC this one raised my enjoyment of the album from a good one to a great one.
[orange]Dracula's Castle[/orange] - Okay a s***e title but IMO a reasonable enough track which has some excellent synth/drum riffs - a little reminiscent of Kraftwerk circa Home Computer.
Guilt Is A Useless Emotion - As good as NO's excursions into Dance music get. A better showcase for Stuart Price's talent and a better choice for a single than Jetstream IMO.
Jetstream is okay but doesn't really push my buttons to make me think of it as a NO classic and Working Overtime isn't bad but seems more suited to Get Ready than WFTSC. Still a very good effort overall!
Cheers!![]()
I love WFTSC.... I STILL play it on a regular basis. In fact I've listened to it so much I'm starting to get sick of it.
Definately one of their best albums.
...and Republic is MEDIOCRE - or the stretch from Young Offender to Times Change anyway - easily NO's worst moment in 30 years.
I just listened to some of Sirens for the first time in months (no New Order at all for weeks now) and some of it I really love.
Who's Joe, title track, Krafty (less so now than when it came out), Morning Night and Day (well, the chorus mainly), and Turn sound so good, and I quite like Road to Ruin and the Mac Quayle version of Guilt.
In fact I think I feel the same about this album as I do about Get Ready: some gems on there, some good tracks, with a noticeable dip in quality in the middle. Still, not a bad album at all, and no one can really complain about it imo. ![]()

Back on topic: Sirens is a good album -- I don't see a theme in the album, but I like it nonetheless. It's better than most of the crap that comes out of music production houses anyway...
I hope New Order keeps recording. ![]()
I hope NO comes out with an album that has some BALLS to it....Sirens is weak, overproduced, souless, and boring. I have faith that the musicians that once played on an album known as Closer, or created the masterpiece Low Life can put out a better record than the bogussness called Sirens. Jetstream???give me a break.. ![]()
Sirens is boss, what do you expect from a bunch of men approaching 50 years old? You heard Pink Floyd or the Rolling Stones' efforts at 48/49/50? Fucking shite mostly! I think a lot of people expect New Order to reinvent the wheel but it ain't gonna happen, the albums are great and if they come up with something like Crystal, Primitive Notion or WFTSC, all of which have blown me away and have been the best songs of their respective years by a mile, then I'm happy.
Rock The Shack, I Told You So, Jetstream, Guilt Is A Useless Emotion, Working Overtime...great songs, just kick back and enjoy, I can recommend that anyone who questions the greatness of I Told You So should put that song on a very loud sound system, preferably a club sound system, and then judge, if you think it's poor now then you'll change your mind sharpish
you got a point, we can't expect the world from them, it's just that with the sorry state (IMO) of music I look towards New Order to provide a superior product than all the rest.
I'm with you on that John, it's just that relative to their status and their circumstances their output is quality, and given that the Stones and Pink Floyd have similar cult/legend status I feel that they offer some kind of a benchmark to compare to, with New Order leaving them standing at this point in their career, compared to those two when they were in their late 40s/early 50s. They could sit on their arses and get someone else to write their lyrics like Pink Floyd but to some extent they're still challenging themselves, and getting someone like Stuart Price to produce tracks is definitely the way forward. I'd quite like them to work with someone young and fairly unknown to see in which direction that would take them; I saw an Ian Brown documentary recently and the fella he worked with on Music From The Spheres would be good.
Jon Murphy wrote: I hope NO comes out with an album that has some BALLS to it....Sirens is weak, overproduced, souless, and boring. Myself, I wish that they'd work hard next time and produce most of their music. Some of my favourite NO songs were produced by New Order alone. Only on rare occasions with Martin Hannet and Stepehn Hague that they produced some amazing results. I also don't like guest artists in any form and please no female background singers. Jetstream is one of my least liked NO song and just look at the credits; written by NO, A. Lynch, S. Price, produced by S. Price and NO, mixed by Jeremy Wheathly and featuring Ana Matronic. Wow, do you see all those people involved? Some of the best songs like Temptation, The Perfect Kiss, Bizarre Love Triangle, etc. were all written and produced by NO and no one else. The band is full of creative talent, at least they used to and I'm sure that they still have some in them. Even with diminish creative ideas, it's still better than the other talents. The more NO the better.
Im sorry about the 29 posts. My computer was acting really fucked up and I thought it only posted once.
WFTSC is great though. Just listened to it this week, again.
I think New Order with BALLS at 50 years old makes audio gems like Behind Closed Doors. I f'n love that song. I can only dream of an entire album with songs like that made by 50 year olds with balls.
